1. Brethren - Non-Compliance

2. Artifakt - No Soul

3. Poison - Seed Of Destruction

4. Twisted System - Right And Wrong*

Charcoal is the first digital-only release by the famous South African label Timecode.

Although I never buy digital releases the tracklist was enough to make me steal my dad's credit card and download it.

First we have a track by the two Summs brothers, Ian aka Phyx and Joseph aka Tickets. This track is similar to the style of their second album The Price Of Prophecy. That means is very story telling, twilight feeling and gently phat. The whole track is based in a simple melody with all the necessary phat sounds all over it and some epic pads at the end. It's great yet never explodes in a sonic mayhem like the tracks Sirens and Betrayal Of Sound of their second album. It feels more like an outro track. Great track for anyone interested in serious psy.

Artifakt's No Soul is everything you wanted from an Artifakt track. It sounds like nothing else in the whole psytrance field and it's bloody brilliant. That's no surprise since Artifakt is known for his inability to produce a bad track. Like the dozens of his tracks before this one No Soul is excellent in everything. It's energetic, with a full on-ish bassline that doesn't feel that full on though, experimental breaks, high-pitched crazy sounds and addictive melodies. The track is groovy and perfect for all times of a day. Production-wise is simply perfect.

Next is a new name Poison. And his track is massive! Everything you wanted from a psytrance track is here. Dark yet not evil dark, powerful to the bone, filled with crazy sounds, classic sci-fi samples and a melodic ending that will blow you away! Who said that there's no new blood in the SA scene? Perfect track. Perfect.

This mini compilation ends with the Gods of modern psytrance, the ultra group Twisted System. Once again their track is fantastic. Right And Wrong is dark to the bone, no twilight stuff here, just darkness. It has very noisy and distorted synths that I guess some people will find a bit too much. The first part is god damn energetic, the kind of psy that makes you go jump. The second part is surpsingly slower, yet more crazy with the one dark melody over another, reminds me a lot of their oldest track Mad Method. It also has many similarities in the sound with their track Psychopath of the Future Cuts compilation. So I guess it's a track that combines all the old and newer elements of their sound. Not their best track, but perfect as always.

So there you have it. Four tracks, four great psy moments.

The only thing I didn't like in this compilation is that it's digital released only. Tracks like these must be released in a cd format. Must!

Fav tracks: All four of them
