  1. Production? Where is the production? 

     

     

    Been listening and suddenly noise come in and eat all percusions, hats gone, then some melody strike and eat whole mix and so on. It sounds to me like mixdown is done in rush, you know like when you are making structure and just putting them on channel without eq, compressing or automate things and i can't imagine how harsh and dangerous it can sound on huge sound systems... and this is biggest problem here, not some notes missing here or there. I am not sure why but artist is not new, he got some 'internship' in scene and music. 

     

    That actually made me realise, that when I'm talking about "production" I don't necessarily mean what is understood today by that term. Because - for the large part - I don't care for music sounding crystal clear or being punchy, as long as it sounds OK. What counts more for me is the imagination in sound design and its diversity, inventiveness in layering the different sounds in respect to each other, creativeness in building and sequencing unique musical and rhythmic patterns. In this sense yes, the bigger problem is "some notes missing here & there" than the sound being slightly muddy on a big sound-system. But then for me psychedelic trance was always "music" first, "dance" second, i.e. form over function, so obviously that's very personal.

  2. I do respect every opinion and point of view, however I think you should see how powerful the music is on the dancefloor. 

     

    As much as I can see this being the case, please consider that majority of today's party-goers have not heard the originals nor do they know who Pleiadians/Etnica are... Compared to most of shit being played today this is a godsend. Compared to the original, not so much :)

     

    And yes, I'm aware I'm a grumpy old man and I don't know how to have fun. That's my right, though ;):P

  3. 1- Those tracks made by EAR! no midi or audio files at all! As a musician i can assure you that very few musicians in the world can do this.

    You have to be a real musical genius (or an extremely good copier, which is more or less the same thing, is a matter of genius). So it is very ok to not sound 100% as the originals. After all, this is the purpose of a RE-MIX, right?

     

    I don't care if it's hard. If someone wants to re-do the old track, he should get the notes spot on. The main melody in Maia misses some of the notes and gets other wrong, so it's simply a sacrilege. It's like those amateur bands that play on weddings, where - on the surface - it sounds like the newest hit you hear on the radio, but on closer inspection the singer is unable to get to those higher-register notes, the keyboardist is too late and misses some notes and I'm pretty sure there was no accordion in the original. I've been making music on and off for over 20 years, so I know what I'm talking about.

     

    If you can't do it properly, or do an actual remix that sounds different on purpose, then just don't do it.

     

     

    And to blow out the myth totally, the "old sound" sound as it sounds because of the lower quality equipment compare with today's standards.

    What we want (unless someone is totally ignorant) is to have back the FEELING of the 90's, The imagination in production.

    NOT the sound quality, which is horrible in most cases!

     

    I never said the originals sounded old! Quite the contrary, actually - it's incredible what they've achieved and some sounds are more futuristic than what we have today.

    Some good sounds, especially the squishy acids in the background around 1/3 and the slow melody in 2/3.

    I appreciated the journey as well - starts like Astral Projection, then gets darker and mysterious to end up slightly "cheesy" (your words :P) in the style of Delirious Noons.

  5. Im looking forward to this, but damn, this has a potentional to fail so majestically. Also, I hope this wont be just a bundle of recycled tracks. As much as I liked his remix of Space Dwarfs, it was identical to the original in structure...

     

    Having quickly listened to it, I share your concerns - e.g. the classic eastern melodies of "Maia" are so tragically botched, that I'm afraid to listen further. So far it sounds like Pleiadians album being re-made (not remixed!) with a more modern sound (though I never heard anyone complaining about Pleiadians sounding dated...), but with a lot of simplifications and trivialisation of the nuances that made the original so great...  :( Hope it gets better later.

    It is an intriguing mix of goa, darkpsy, Nitzho and ...folk? Their previous "Space In The Woods" album was a mixed bag for me, so tread carefully :)

  7. I only recently came back to writing music after 18 years of silence, so I don't have much to show for it yet :) However, you're more than welcome to check my 1995-99 music in a link below my post.

     

    Regarding tutorials, there's a lot of stuff out there but it mostly focuses on sounds and technical side of music, rather than arrangement and song structure design. I'll try to look for it and post a link(s) if I find something. In the meantime, have a look at the posts I wrote as a feedback to a guy wanting to improve his 'amateur' skills.     In terms of song structure itself, a good tip is to load your favourite track of other artist into your DAW and mark on the timeline specific segments (with location markers in Ableton Live, arranger track in Studio One 3.x, etc): intro, build-up, break, peak, bridge, outro, etc. This way you can adjust your track to match that structure. Try to understand how those parts differ and how is that difference achieved. And copy it. That's the best way to learn :)

  8. I'm not nearly ready to comment on the music itself, but to the fan of synthesis, sound-sculpting and analog gear in general; this is heaven!  :o

     

    Also it's very apparent that Jannis has matured as a composer / arranger, which wasn't always the case in the past with his either chaotic or slightly incoherent tunes. There's clear idea, movement and progression here, which I really appreciate. Lovely stuff!  :wub:

    So many of my teenage memories are connected to the times he was at the top of the charts! I remember re-doing "Children" in ProTracker on Amiga at some point.

    Also, I wouldn't be surprised if that song's name wasn't an inspiration for the nick / handle of the founder of this forum :)

  10. I like the groove (reminds me of early Para Halu release) and many of the sounds!

     

    However:

    - I dont' really hear any structure in the song - it is fairly flat in terms of energy, with no real buildup / peak / release, etc. sections (maybe that's by design),

    - the acid at 5:37 is completely out of tune.

     

    BTW, what's the significance of "432&528hz" in titles of your tracks? I remember reading something about it being a 'healing frequency' and 'original tuning for A-note' which was then conspired to be changed to 440 hz which - supposedly, because I can't hear that - sounds darker and more menacing  :huh:  :lol: (sorry). Is there any significance to this?

  11. It sounds really good - very clean & transparent, so I'd say you're doing fine with regards to mixing.

     

    What I'm not convinced about is the melodic work. For example when the bass comes in initially and again around 5:20 it sounds slightly out of tune. The main body of the bass seems OK, but the higher frequencies are somewhat off I think (can't explain it better). The melodies at 2:00 - 3:20 are either a bit chaotic and placed awkwardly, or very simplistic. And playing them with flute(ish) sample in a high-tempo track doesn't really work well - it fitted much better in your "Acoustic Hologram" when it was complementing the main, more traditional synth. On the other hand, that part after 4:14 and before the break is really, really good with that counterpoint ascending riff - creates an interesting, mystical atmosphere.

  12. It's just unfair how quickly you pump those tracks out AND how good they are... What is it, every 2-3 days now?  :blush:

     

    This one is actually one of the better ones, I heard from you, even though the middle part - say between 4:40 and 7:40 (maybe with the exception for 6:00-6:50) - introduces nothing exciting and could be cut out for my liking. The bit at 8:45 is great! Cosmosis would be proud! :)

  13. Can't say I liked all tracks but it is one of the most imaginative and interesting releases I've ever heard in psytrance. Great melodies, I mean really great, very well executed muscially, and lots of variation in sounds and textures. Highly psychedelic and very emotional at the same time.

     

    My thoughts exactly! Wish this was re-issued on a CD!

    @antic, it is not really recommended for high in demand releases such as this one to put files ANY day before the release date, it would end up immediately on torrents/youtube and mp3 sharing sites.

    I for one think it is fair the files are given only the day of the release, which should be the norm.

     

    No, I'm not saying to put the files up earlier, just to make the pre-order available. I want to buy 2 Suntrip releases at once to combine shipping, so I could pay & order for both, get the files for one of them (V/A Inti) and the rest of the files (K.O.B.) as soon as it's released. Also, this is how Arabesque which I linked is doing it if you checked the link. I order several CDs at once, some already released and others not and I get the files as they become available and CDs when the last one of the bunch is released.

     

    I'd imagine this is good business, because it allows the label to get the money up-front, sometimes even few weeks before the actual release, without the risk of leaking the files.

     

    BTW, you should consider it as well for DAT Records :)
