You, who have a finger on the pulse of current modern psy, is this genre still prevalent? What years are the tracks you posted from? I like all three alot.

    Freq - 2004, Andromeda  -2005, Sensogram - 2012.

I don't know any current artists with similar sound. Most recent mainstream "prog" actually soudns like full-on slowed down to 138-140 bbm.

  2. It seems that some people miss this style, me included.

Compared to the todays definition of prog it often had more groovy, syncopated bassline (though sometimes also the typcial KbBB pattern but somewhat more "relaxed"), less starts, stops and shooshes, more mellow and hypnotic flow with lots of lush atmospheric layers and sounds.

Everybody knows Vibrasphere and Atmos, but I also like these albums, perhaps less known

    Freq-Strange Attractors

    Andromeda - Sensations

    Sensogram - Parallel Minds

What else should I check out, with similar sound?

  3. Indeed, as someone said here, what is called "progressive" now is actually full-on slowed down to 138 bpm. I do actually like quite a lot of it but I miss softer, mellower and more hypnotic side of progressive

It's not that it's completely gone but is hader to find.

A more recent track with similar vibe (2018 I think)

  4. Pandorum seems to fit the bill but for some reason i wasn't overly impressed. Maybe i need to watch it one more time.

Another one, not really about space but it deals with aliens - The Fourth Kind. It gets mostly bad reviews but for some reason it really scared the shit out of me. I had a terrible hangover when i watched it tho, maybe that's the reason.

Only ones I can think of really is this movie and Alien and Aliens(although more action flick than Alien). The Predator/AVP movies fit slightly into the genre, but they more often take place on earth. Prometheus is good too IMO, but it lacks the horror vibe of Alien and Event Horizon.

Prometeus has great aesthetics but it raises more questions than answers. And I won't mention Alien/Covenant here. Life (2017) was not bad but very similar to Alien. Predator I think is more of an action movie, I have fond memories of the first two films but I think it shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence with Alien(s) and Event Horizon (and I'd better pretend I never saw  the 2018 movie).

If someone knows some good sci fi horrors with space aesthetics, I'm all ears

Four track EP, stylistically it's all over the place, so I'll introduce each track separately :)

Star Matter - melodic goa inspired by Global Sect sound

Safe Travels - oldschool melodic full-on, homage to late 00's Dacru style (Ephedrix, Aquila, Alternative Control and similar)

Impossible Landscape - more modern take on morning/progressive style

The Distance - also a kind of morning track with some melodic elements. This track was written in collaboration with another Psynews member, Astralprojection, who provided some melodic ideas, mixing advices and motivation to pull it off

Watched Event Horizon, hadn't seen it in many years. Not bad, quite an original idea, combining the "haunted house" horror template with a space ship setting. Obviously inspired by Alien and Hellraiser and also a bit by The Shining I think. This movie reminds me of the Dead Space games, although it's obviously the movie that came before those games.

One of my favourite sci fi classics, along with Alien.

  8. If I had unlimtied funds I'd buy a separate room for a studio, at least 20 square meters, and invest few grands into a proper acoustic treatment and a good sub matching my monitors. Also a UAD card with full plugin package.

Synth-wise I'd probably buy Waldorf Quantum and Dave Smith OB-6. But most likely I would still use mostly software synths for actual tracks  :)

I'd still use the hp first, then whatever the saturation might bring back would be pleasant and also its up to you what you do with the saturation. But I wouldn't say one way is right another is wrong. I would also like to hp before the compressor and not after :)

I'm not saying you're wrong or I'm right but it's probably fine both ways depending on what you plan to do with it.

Using HP first can make sense too, sometimes you don't want to overload the saturator with the bass frequencies, especially if it's not frequency selective. But then you may want to check at the end of the signal chain if your processing doesn't add to much lows and maybe use another HP.

I used to have a persistent problem of lower midrange muddiness in my mixes, it turned out this was largely due to that I was using a HP first in the chain

  10. I think Van Buuren's collab with Vini Vici was an one-off.

Sean Tyas who used to be a household name in commercial trance, has made some psy tracks which sounded decent but quite generic

Protoculture, who had migrated from psytrance to commercial trance long ago, returned into psy as Shadow Chronicles (still with a lot of EDM/mainstream trance elements but not really cringeworthy)

I think psytrance may be something of interest for mainstream trance producers as a production challenge, for being highly techncially advanced music.
