1. hello!

what tools do you use to make advanced sounds??

i dont mean really nice synth...

    i mean:

    creating new sounds

those sounds you hear when the beat stops for a second,

    ..with many tricks inside...

    like chopped up echos

    sudden stops

    mangled sound explosions

for example alot of the sounds you will hear in

    Bluetech

    CPU

    Nine inch nails

    Psysex

    and other accomplished artist

what tools do you use to create+mangle sounds??

im sure this will be interesting for all

    cheers

  2. Yeah, I'd actually spend more on the mixer. Personally I have a crappy numark two-channel... it does the trick, it can be brought out easily, but it's nothing fancy. Vestax makes some great mixers imho. Take note of what I wrote about the 'cue knob' earlier in the thread.

About only seeing 100s on the streets - well yeah, they just came out all of two months ago or whatever. If it weren't for them being cheaply made plastic, I think we'd see a greater adoption rate. As is I don't see any logical follower to the 100 right now, though I wish more promoters would start bringing 800s or 1000s out. Those are sweet.

As for mylo and anyone else claiming the 100s are perfectly fine  - sounds like you might not have as precise an ear as I possess, or just don't really care. One minute mixes of full-on stuff? Whatever floats your boat...

    303765

the 1000's are very popular around calgary. i see them everywhere!

full-on is quite tough to make a long mix in comparison to prog. you will be lucky to find two tracks that fit for a 1 minute mix. thats why loops are so handy for fullon.

i dont want to dis prog, but, it annoys me when prog DJs frown upon fullon DJs for not making long mixes.

thats like booing a racer for not taking a long turn on a sharp corner

good sound is the most important!!!

what numark mixer do u use?

  3. Should I spend extra on a GOOD mixer?

Basilisk, I accept recommendations *anything below 300 USD in the US*

    303635

this is my set up. i love this picture. i just took it

    Posted Image

    Numark DXM06

    killer sound quality, 24bit

    nice effects!

    plus it looks cool

i highly recommend this instead of behringer

this will cost about $250 US

    2 channel with 4 inputs

you can even plug a guitar into it

  4. hmm. i didnt realize how big the difference in pitch adjusting is.

i thought it was only .01% different.

    after looking at various stats

that said I would choose the CDJ200 over the 100

    CDJ100 0.10%

    CDJ200 0.02%

    CDJ800 0.05%

    CDJ1000 0.02%

but ultimately i'd take the CDJ 800 over them all ;)

    they are so friggin cool

and the 4x loop buttons are perfect for mixing full-on psy

  5. So you're saying the only good thing about the 200's is the pitch resolution.

I sort of agree on that, but I just TRIED to match a few tracks on a pair of CDJ-800 my brother owns.

For a beginner with enough cash to buy any of them is the 100 extra-dollars on each deck actually worth it because of the MP3 feature (I'll be PRACTICING at home, few CDs, loads of tracks) and the pitch resolution?

You must consider that I can sell them FAST and with PROFIT (at least 20% I'd say)  in Brazil if I want to upgrade to other deck or simply buy the workaholic CDJ-100s.

    303319

i dont think the extra pitch is TOO important

you only really need that if you are planning to sit back and let your mixes play.

but in reality most of your mixes are going to need constant fine-tuning with the jog wheel.

depends on your style i guess.

if you are a progressive beat matching nazi, who refuse to mix any less than 2 minuts, then spend the extra $

  6. Interesting range of styles you got there. Your stuff sounds very experimental to me, and I like that, it's the stuff I least expected, heh.

However I get the impression that your style is mostly pretty .. eh.. deep. It could maybe get more hi frequencies. And sometimes it gets a little too minimalistic for my taste. However it is always good to hear new artists with a nice track collection. Keep it up!

    303251

i hear ya! although i dont consider my tunes minimal, they are lacking alot of wooshy mid sounds and effects that i like in psy. I am still trying to improve in this area!! I think once my skills are better I can create those sounds... it is alot of work! This week i plan to not make any music. Just new sounds. Then go back and make songs. i think its a good strategy, because making a song+sounds at the same time can be too much work.

    thanks for the feedback!!

  7. I checked few out and that space angel was above the rest easily :)

ps. man is that you in your avatar? looks like your on a trip :D

    303083

    ooo you like chillout? :)

ya thats me, right before cops shut down the party!!

it looks funny cuz im bent over the mixer and my eye is closed

but im drinking chile beer

  8. Pioneer CDJ-200 is 100 USD more expensive than the CDJ-100s.

As far as I know the only difference (main difference at least) would be:

    1. CDJ200 plays MP3 CDs.

    2 CDJ200 Pitch vaires 0.02%  vs 0.1% from CDJ100.

Any experienced DJs have anything to comment on that?

Is it worth it paying $100 USD for the CDJ-200?

    303249

i would never buy an mp3 cd player

cuz it will make you lazy and evil

    hehe

  9. What i meant by best, is a software that allows me to make good effects like Cosmosis does. Btw, i'm a beginner.

sundrop, 'cut off' is the effect that 'tweaks' a sound like its been squeezed and streched. I don't know how to explain it!

    302985

i dont know what cosmosis uses for sequencer but:

they might use Logic on Mac or Cubase on Windows

i'd wager that most of the top acts use Logic on Mac.

cosmosis also use hardware. Virus C and Nord Lead.

of course for us who cannot afford this nice equipment,

dont worry about it, make music anyway !!

even if the sounds arent clean and pro,

it is more rewarding to hear a finished song you made,

than to hear nothing at all.

i use Cubase + Reason, and i highly recommend this combination. its quite tough to use but you will get great results. i am sitting here after starting 1 year ago to make music. i made my first song with Fruity. then about 40 songs with Reason. now i have 5 songs finished with cubase. :) i have no success with publishing music , but then again i never tried it. hehe it is only a hobby for me today.

i still dont understand cutoff. maybe thats part of filter? but if you try Albino you just might find it is called something different. perhaps its the LFO?? i dunno. i just recommend you try Albino. heheh visit Cosmosis web site for more info!

  10. i'd love to do some djing, but i have no idea how about how that works.

so my questions go out to all u out there who are djing...

how did u start? did u just buy the gear and tried out yourself, did u have the chance to learn it somewhere?

    which gear do i need?

i'd be thankful for any information...

    302666

i thought i would add more reply:

when i started to spin psy, its only because i love the music. and want to share it with everyone (because no one plays it where i live)

i am not a club DJ but i play lots of underground parties and some raves. IMO thats the best places to play anyways, very exciting, if you want a fun hobby;)

unless you know some1 who spins psy, chances are you wont find a place to try 2 CD decks. most DJs play house/trance and have turntables + CDJ for the odd tune. where i live using CDs is frowned upon because they think u are playing mp3!!!

i bought two American Audio CDI 500. DO NOT BUY THESE.

    my advice to you:

    - effecs features of CD decks is not important

    - the most important is the quality

you wont be having fun if you cant beatmatch on your decks because they dont hold a pitch

    get the pro decks

like Pioneer CDJ 100's or the new 200

DONT get a numark cd deck, or any cd deck designed for rap/club music

these decks are fine for some music but *not* for psy. IMO pioneers are the only way to go for psy... i learnt this the hard way!!

finally... just play,... try to play the songs u love ... and if you want people to dance... play around with many different songs ... the songs you love might not be the songs people dance to ... so experiment!! if no one will book you to play their rave, then... throw your own party ! with help of friends!!

    cheers

    dave

  11. Hi,

this is my 1st post. I've been using Fruity Loops for a while but i'm having some difficulties. It seems that the only sounds that i can cut off are the TS404 sounds. How do you cut off other sounds?

I've tried to make some songs the best as I could. I will post them some time later. I've also tried a demo of Reason2. Its very impressive and complicated, compared to Fruity Loops. I could not use it...too complicated!

When i use 'cut off' effect on a TS404 sound in Fruity Loops, it doesnt sound too good, it sounds limited. Is that because Fruity Loops is not a professional tool? I'd like to know which software i can use that does a good cuf off like Cosmosis does! ( Am I exagerating? ) !

    Thanks.

    302941

im not sure what you mean by "cutoff"?? what does it do. i cant stand Fruity interface, and I abandonded it once i tried reason, but i must admit FL sounds great.

you wont find the "clean" psy sound from reason, but nevertheless reason is still a great tool.

if you want to sound like cosmosis, i highly recommend you try Albino 2, a plug in that works with FL. they use that alot!

    cheers

    dave

  12. Am I just freaking out about nothing? Because I feel almost like I'll never get as good as the guys who actually get some money for what they do. Which means it woulnd't be a great career path

If you think about it, so many people want to be DJ's and producers these days. Far more than parties can support. So it's more like a shot in the dark for most people taking up what is a very pricey career - a lot of time, a lot of music collection, which may pay off to nothing? Except some fun obviously.

if u wanna make money off it then u gotta go sell it. just remember a good salesman is not the same as a good producer ;) so be both

you dont have to sell your music and make money to be "successful"...

if u make the music u love

and other people love it too... thats a pretty damn good life right there

  13. there is one huge difference between guys like us (new at home producers) and most of the big boys:

***they know each other and teach each other tricks***

if you want to get like them, as fast as they do, you gotta join their "team"!!

like if you live in israel im sure you can start making top quality psytrance instantly with all the pros living there.

im still far away from pro level but, recently i asked an artist to collaborate with a track (synsun) and they remixed it for me :) that was pretty sweet and i learnt alot. artists are people too and like hangin out with friends so... try and hook up with some! u will find even the top artists like to learn new things even from newbies!

even if u are one of the only people producing psy in your area (like me) u can still learn a ton of stuff from people who produce other forms of music. find people who make trance, house, etc. anyone who uses the same tools u want to master. i found a guy who make nuNRG in my area (rodi style) and learnt from him too. u just gotta be open minded and friendly and explore things around u

im not saying u cant do it alone but... with help u can get there faster

now if only CPU would teach me :) hehe i wish

    cheers

    dave

AWESOME!! i like your style :)

children of paradise ... what a good tune !!

  15. funny, most vinyl are pressed from CD masters. especially psytrance!

i dont think vinyl has any sound superiority over CD.

personally i think CD sounds better for psy (pure digital)

but records have major advantage over CD for DJs:

    1) they wont skip like a CD

    2) you can "see" the music on the record

    3) records look cool, and are easier to search thru

    4) most clubs have turntables but no CDJs

    Ticon

i find this ticon release to be very... normal... plain

i really love It Breakz My Heart. please, Ticon, make another track like that.

    a masterpiece!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i imagine they found true love after making that tune.

  16. Just another gay commercial release.

what kind of place would this be considered gay commercial music?

do you live in a dungeon, or torture chamber? hehe

  17. holy #*$#

this is great music!!! some tracks are very inspired. i would almost call this western-style club psy - thats my style too!! ;)

not all the songs are awesome, but there are a couple that are sooooo good. i love the beatboxing track (cream!!!) and the trumpets track (Ateam!!). these tracks make me smile and close my eyes....

im so addicted to this right now!

    sun rating: 10/10
