  1. Juno Reactor really did make excellent Goa, but I've only dabbled in their later stuff; it's good quality but not my preference, probably a little too percussive and tribal.

    I still play High Energy Protons regularly, and for that reason my vote goes to Transmissions, one of the earliest artist albums to define the Goa sound!

    Before forest and glitchy stuff there was the kind of darkpsy made by Parasense, 2004-era Kindzadza, The Nommos etc., which seems to be the most hated genre on psynews according to this thread and other comments people have made. I just don't understand why. Those artists took elements from early psytrance that people here like (e.g. Hallucinogen, X-Dream, Hux Flux) and took them to extremes, and the result was some of the most avant-garde and, IMO, psychedelic releases of the Noughties.

    I had honestly completely forgotten about that older style, but thinking about it I do actually really appreciate it. I used to listen to artists like Fungus Funk, Terminator, Para Halu and Samadhi a lot when I was younger, I remember it was some very heavy music which i'll have to re-visit.

  3. I only have one issue with this CD and that is its shameful treatment of Goaway by Power Source, neglecting that iconic melody in favour of an easy mix! Aside from that it's a wonderful mix that sits nicely on my pile!

  4. I like a lot of Forest darkpsy; Ghreg on Earth, Derango, Troglodytes, Hallucinogenic Horses, Encephalopaticys, Atriohm etc.

    Feel free to point any more out!

    This style of psytrance is extraordinarily complex, and relies less on a prominent bassline than "glitchy darkpsy", which I find very vulnerable to derivative imitations of the few excellent artists: Kindzadza, Psykovsky, etc.

  5. It seems an artist just can't win. When Goa died everyone was crying about minimal and how they wanted real Goa trance back again... that sounded like Pleiadians and Etnica. An artist is influenced by them and references them so that people understand there is an artist who feels like we do, and makes the melodic Goa he wants to make and now people are crying about how he's ripping off their sound, or crying about how he's not ripping off their sound but ripping off their name, or crying about how he's not ripping off their sound well enough.

    People should have some fucking respect.

  6. Fair enough, but I think Hallucinogen's use of the sample in LSD is a little different. Firstly (although this is a subjective view clearly), musically the track is widely held to be one of the greatest hallmarks of Goa trance, the same cannot be said for 1200mics. Also I feel like Hallucinogen can be forgiven for the sample seeing as the track was made before such samples had already become hideously cliche; in 1994 the sample was iconic, and the track was even more so. Now it has been done to death and far beyond. Fullon that uses drugs samples uses them to attract an audience, and make it's subpar tracks more memorable and in some way more accessible to those hoardes of people who attend parties only to get fucked up (we've all seen it), Hallucinogen already had the quality of track, and genuinely felt the artistic need to reference LSD, I doubt fullon artists feel so genuine about it, I feel they're just using and abusing so to say!

    This is just my opinion!

  7. That's true, but an artist name after the amount of drugs Raja Ram took to finish some track, combined with an album where every single song is explicitly titled as simply the name of a drug, and revolves primarily around a sample to do with that, frankly takes the cake.

    The odd reference sample is bearable, and I do feel that a lot of oldschool Goa was more subtle in it's use of samples than psytrance is today.

  8. Yeah Logic Bomb made some incredible tracks, all about atmosphere and that kind of serious and thoughtful futuristic vibe. Yeah I agree, when it starts becoming about who's got the highest bpm all you get is generic "dancefloor killers" and it's no longer about the substance of the tracks, Logic Bomb was indeed happy to plod his tracks along, letting the beat become the framework for his concepts in music and not becoming the sole focus of the entire album like so many fullon artists post 2004.

    Oh man, I could never stand 1200mics, Raja Ram created an album by which a lot of other musical genre's fans judge psytrance, as stupid drug obsessed, cheese loving wannabes, and it was a self fulfilling stereotype because it did so well.

    Fullon bassline -> Drug Reference -> Corny main lead . . . and sometimes, electric guitar synthesizers. Eugh.

  9. I hate those melodies that don't do anything. They just change note to absolutely no effect but in the synth style of a big euphoric lead; i'd prefer the artist just do something euphoric or uplifting and have done with it rather than trying to hold on to a shred of psychedelia by refusing, even though it's on top of the same Israeli bassline and claps we've heard a thousand times before and are most definetly not psychedelic after they've been repeated for ten years:

     

     

    Oh and I hate that almost all of it copies, pretty much exactly, the sounds that were done in like 2002/3 by Absolum, Logic Bomb etc, and they did it so much better!

    Would you believe that this beautiful, mechanical, clean and crystal clear piece of eery and melodic psychedelic fullon was made in 2002?! :

     

     

    And I hate, hate, 1200 mics.
