This is the first, and in my opinion best, Proxeeus album. I like it best because it drips with spirit juice and is true to Goa trance.

After this album Proxeeus' albums are best described as neo-Goa, and whilst "Weird Tales" and "Non-Euclidian Geometry" are both quite good, they are a bit hectic for their own good, a bit too laden with layers - almost as thought they are trying to outdo each other, instead of embracing the simpler powers of harmony and structure. By the time of "Perversion & Insanity", Proxeeus has abandoned Goa and embraced psytrance and that album, probably the darkest so far, has galloping horse and machine gun basslines galore - I personally struggle to listen to more than a few tracks in a row as a result.

But back to "At the Mountains of Madness": I like it that this album has the direct simplicity of original Goa - it does not try to achieve too much, using economical means to summon up a mysterious, slightly ominous atmosphere. It is not nearly as dark as Xenomorph, but there is some eeriness on offer here - appropriately for an artist obviously influenced by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft with his cosmic materialism and great old ones - ancient beings and elemental forces, many of them malevolent. There is a certain minimalism in this album that appeals to me. One of the things that particularly strikes me about this album is that there do not seem to be any weak tracks. That is a very good thing, obviously. However, by the same token, there aren't really any obvious stand-out hits either. This record seems to be more about the plateau than about the peak. Nevertheless, I think that probably my favourite track on the album is the closer "The Sea of Tranquility" - tranquil, sure, but with a hint of the sinister about it.

I think this album and "Celephais", a psychill album, are the best of Proxeeus - at least so far. We wait to see what the future will bring (along with the great old ones, that is...). ~*~

An interesting take. I've noticed similar patterns with quite a lot of artists. Usually the first album/tracks are quite raw in their energy and have interesting quirks to the production and style. As time passes many artist "fine-tune" (sometimes homogenize) their sound and become "professionals" in what they do, but usually that is at the expense of that early rawness. Another great example is E-mantras early tracks and the later ones. He still has that signature sound, but it's definitely more "mature". Sometimes it's a good thing, other times it might sour fans of previous inputs (not saying either in the case of E-mantra). Obviously artists evolve, but sometime's it'd be interesting to experience that "raw" of the earlier productions later on.

  2. I can't believe I never posted on this thread. Then again I haven't posted much at all. Aaanyway..

This Sky Technology alright! Melodic climaxes for days, but this time with relentless basslines and sound design similar to his older tracks, but with more finesse and control over how it synergizes with everything. Great album and even with all going on, I hope his (fanboy moment) penultimate "Reactor Of Life" album will see the light of day.. someday. :P

Is track one Morphic Moon a remix of one my songs? :) I remember Cristian once asked me if he could do that, must have been like 7 years ago now..

Damn I remember posting a thread about your website a long time ago! Yeah some of those melodies sound the exact same. Interesting you weren't credited (unless it's in the booklet). Edit: apparently it's not.

Are you still planning on releasing that album by the way? It'd be an apt fit for https://unreleasedgoarecords.bandcamp.com/

  4. Please read and respect these rules/guidelines before posting new reviews.

    1. Please use the appropriate release year before posting . If you're posting in a "multiple year" thread (ie. 1990-1994) then specify the release year in the thread title.

    2. If youre an artist / label that wants to promote a new release please use the Promos group and not this one! ANY promos found in the reviews section will be moved and the one responsible for it warned.

    3. This section is for psytrance reviews and psytrance related genres reviews. If you want to discuss the best releases this year, what albums should be considered classics, the reviews section layout, the quality of reviews, the latest Tool release, want to request a review, etc. etc., then please use the General or Off-Topic sections of the forum!

This is intended for psytrance music and its subgenres so no reviews of parties or other music genres. A bigger tolerance will be allowed for old stuff (stuff released before 96) since back then there wasn't an "official definition" of psytrance.

Also chillout/ambient genres are allowed as per usual.

    4. Before posting a new review, check if a review of the album hasn't already been written. If its the case then write your review in the already existing thread and do NOT open a new one! Finding older topics should be easy, use the Search function: type part or the whole album title and dont forget to limit the search to the subforum of the year you want to post in.

If you're starting a new thread for a compilation then you should ALWAYS write the title under the format : "V/A - Name of comp". So that all the compilations will be easier to find. So do NOT start a topic with "VA" (no "/" between the V and the A) or "V/A :" (":" instead of "-"), "VA Name of Comp" (no "-" between the V/A and the name) etc. This is because how search works.

    5. When opening a new thread put the name of the album and artist in the topic title and make sure it doesn't have any typos (or else the search function wont work). If you made a mistake, you can easily re-edit the title by using the Edit button at the end of your post, if that function is not working, then use the report function and report your topic to moderators asking to correct the typos.

(UPDATED 2023) 6. You should aim for the first post to be more informative, but honestly since the review forum has become a bit of a graveyard, just posting an album you wish to be discussed with a mini review is, at this point, more than enough.

Here is a few well made reviews that should give the general idea on how an informative review could look!

    7. Personal grudges against artists or reviewers are not welcomed and will be deleted and might lead to moderation so try to use your brain before posting. If you have anything to say to the artist or another reviewer you can always PM (Private Message) or e-mail them.

    8. When you open a thread please include Cover Art, Tracklist(preferably with track lengths), release date, label etc. relevant information regarding the album you are reviewing. Also it might be a good idea to include links to shops that are selling the release.

Morphic Resonance is back with a 3rd nightish acidic goa-trance album from an alien world! The big difference with his previous albums? The production quality! Cristian Fernandez from Spain managed to upgrade his producing skills big time without losing his analog touch and this resulted in his best album so far without any doubt! After testing his new music on many parties and festivals around the world he was finally satisfied with his newest work: Extasensory Perception! Smashing powerful darker goa-trance for psychedelic minds that miss the old school influenced night music!

  6. I'd call this my best goa mix so far. Mostly new tracks post-2020 to give you guys and idea what to expect form the current goa landscape. Starting off with a couple of creatively fun tracks toward more serious stuff. Prepare to be surprised. This is a good mix for those who are out of the loop. :P

    Astrogano - Borderline
    Hypnoxock - Spaguetization
    Celestial Intelligence - Phantom Dancer
    Artifact303 - Unidentified
Nebula Meltdown - Bending Space (2021 Warp Drive Mix)
Triquetra - A Large Cup Of Chaos, Please
    InnerZone - Sea of Tranquility
    Ephedra - Acid Headache
    Moon Beasts - Demon Star
Ephedra - Right to the Soul
TAO & NAGA - Spirit Bomb
    Midiotz - Folie a deux

  7. This album is really awesome up until track 7 (I just cannot stand that Tanta Pena scream anymore, it's offputting). Sublime and cinematic atmospheres. It's not really goa, nor psy, just a fusion of whatever Ben was interested in back then. Perfect Crime is a great ender for tracks 1-6.

Recommended to anyone who wants to visit the world of Blade Runner / Ghost In The Shell / Matrix / whatever cyberpunk setting you prefer.

Too bad about tracks 7 and 9.

Hmm, what happened in 2022? Let's see...

I deleted all my DJ sets from SoundCloud (and cancelled my pro subscription) and YouTube in June. I did play a whopping 8 gigs during the entire year, mostly with not much inspiration, and half of them were birthday gigs with people turning 40 (I mean, a few years ago I played at people's 30th birthdays, we're slowly getting old here...). The highlight of the year (again) was the finale of our series of top secret goa trance beach parties. We decided that a decade of doing these was enough and went out with a blast: a 10 hour nonstop back to back gig with 7 (or was it 8?) DJs on constant rotation. No laptops, just one pair of SL1200s and Nexus CDJs. Even I played a few vinyls even if I'd never done that on a gig before.

What else? I've mostly turned into a reclusive hermit, didn't go to a single party unless I was playing (actually no that's bullshit, I did go to one or two where I wasn't playing but didn't really enjoy myself, bleh). Emptied all my social media accounts too (didn't close them though for various reasons) and been spending (too much) time just by myself. This can't be good in the long run but I can't be bothered to do anything about it right now.

In general I've lost most of my interest towards anything "trance" (not all of it, that's impossible), trying to find some enjoyable metal and/or heavier rock bands instead (or even some electronic music with guitars etc), with not much success, but still some, that's a plus :)

So uh, did I forget something? Probably.

Man, just when I got into mixing you go ahead and become a recluse. Could've attended parties together. :(

Sounds like a very bad degree burn-out. You need some ointment (dunno what it could be for that).

  9. I'll be posting whatever sets I make in this thread. The first one isn't really psytrance, but the next one will be, so I'll reserve a slot on this section anyway. :P I'm a total noob so not all transitions are smooth.

First one is inspired by Anjunadeep explorations that I attended this year. Mostly deep house and chill house. I'll guarantee you a melodic journey back to the warmth of last summer.

  10. For me it was an interesting year sonically. I basically had a massive turnover toward modern psytrance, techno and all things house (mostly the melodic deep/prog type). I attended Anjunadeep Albania during the summer, which was my first festival abroad - it being completely deep house. I always imagined it being goatrance, but alas! (I've gotten old.)

Though regardless of that huge shift towards other edm, I still love to find goay productions. Everything with 303 and melodies! Minimal ain't my thing.

I also started hanging out with this local producer who encouraged me to start mixing. We're planning a trance/techno party for march 2023 and, hopefully, I'll be playing deep house/trance set for the beginning. I'm also planning a bunch of psytrance mixing which I'll share here. Who knows, maybe you'll find me producing in a few years. :P

As far as releases goes this year, well, I did listen a lot, buut not much stuck to my mind. I really enjoyed Nebula Meltdown's Gloria In Excelsis Lumen, I even had the privledge to listen to it live. Filteria was a maaassive lettdown, but it suddenly became my most listened spotify album. Who would have guessed? Heh. Honestly a lot of releases got ignored because the amount of time I gave to just listening whatever the hell spotify offered me - and most of that was house/techno/trance/psytrance. Just random bits mostly, no albums. Edit: actually a lot of (at least fullon) psytrance artists seem to release a lot of singles these days, rather than storytelling albums. Did anyone actually come across decent full-length psytrance albums this year? Not just singular tracks put together, but an album experience, something like fragletrollet's 2009 album.

As for reviews my impression is that the activity of those might've moved to Bandcamp? I'm not a Bandcamp user myself. But that would be my best guess, and Discogs maybe. Or is Discogs dead these days?

Still tho, not all releases are available on Bandcamp so I don't quite see how it could be a complete review site for Psytrance.

Anyways kinda sad, I would like to see the forum prosper. I looked around on Discord to see if there is any Psytrance servers there. Not much, so I suppose most hang in the Psytrance label groups on FB.

Discord can't really replace the forum because of the review forum. Maybe we will eventually fade out but as a resource of all things psytrance this place is irreplaceable. But you are right, people are following the artist on other platforms that, quite frankly, suck for discussion. Bandcamp is good for reviews but there is no discussion. Discogs is as dead as this place.

  11. If any album deservers a remaster it's this one. A lot of the tracks are, like you said, quite muddy. Just about anything from this era of MFG has bad mixing, which is a total shame. You can EQ the tracks for sure, but it only masks the problem a little bit.

  12. So, almost at the end of 2022 and we have basically gotten 3 album reviews this year. Even 2021 had at least 27 threads. Also the post count has decreased dramatically from the previous (quite dead as well) years.

I know a lot of reviews from 2021 were by a handful of users, same for 2020. Did we stop listening to new albums or don't we just care enough to write about the highlights?  How are our members doing? What kind of a year did you guys have (sonically or otherwise)? Any notable albums or tracks from 2022?

Let's at least try to have an active thread to have a send off for 2023! :P

I've attached the post counts per month for the past 3 years.
