Boom Devil - Rumble

I don't think this is so bad. This can be listened to when you are relaxed, and

it works fine there. Honestly some tracks are good journeys. The problem is

that it's not psytrance, not ambient, just something hybrid.

The begining of the album is not my cup of tea, but from track nr 6 it gets

really better. It may deserve a try for those who like experimental

psyweirdstuff. 6/10

Review:

At last, a record for those of us who wish Portishead would cover Sneaker

Pimps. Move over, Brain Food. Step aside, The Earth Moving the Sun. Flying

Rhino has provided the new worst-ever Goa record. The first two tracks feature

a lot of maudlin sweeping violins, a whole lot of sappy love song lyrics, sung

all syrupy by a sassy lady who probably has a fabulous body - oh wait - it

might be her on the 'Something for the Weekend' cover! I still do like

'Nothing to be afraid of' very much, but it's already been released. Rumble is

a me-too breakbeat track, all overpolished with a percussion line that's

included in the Casiotone demo programs. Track five, there she is again, on

top of another track that has no new ideas from the first two. Track six, some

faster snare-driven breakbeats, and another clip-art atmosphere, this time LTJ

Bukem-style. Not bad, but you don't need to listen to the whole track; one

minute will give you all you need to know. Track 7, that bloody songstress

again on gloomy Bristol garagey samples they must have dug up from the 1997

top-of-the-pops time capsule. We get the point! Stop the inanity! Track 8, I

can't stand it! This could get airplay on AM golden-oldies radio. It's already

its own muzak Yanni-fied horror. Oooo, track 9 starts in a promising fashion,

nice washboardy effects and ghostly choir, add some bullfrogs, pause, oh shit

here come the cinematic violins. Enter a simple breakbeat around 120 BPM and

some spy-movie-soundtracks effects, ehhh, not bad. Track 10 is DJ-helper

fade-out ambience, could be useful somewhere. Just a semantic quibble here, an

epilogue is supposed to be at the end. And don't I wish it had been! Track 11

is an awful spoken-word attempt with some Hallmark-card-worthy trite wishful

thinking, Robbie Robertson already made this record, much better, way back in

1986. I suppose it could have been worse without the few adequate tracks, so

0.5/10.

Pretty decent Portishead/Moloko clone so don't be a Dummy and expect any

psytrance references. I was quite pleased with the spacy chill stuff of the

Live in Germany CD so I actually can play this without an unhealthy puke

session. If u ever wanted horny hookers in your psychedelic trips give this a

spin...it might work... 7/10

I wanna upgrade to 9/10 cause this is currently the only CD doing the rounds in

my player...The tasteless scum I am. First album that your oh so Gothic

Girlfriend might like as well as your mom. Can't wait for the Red Seal album

:)...go fly a Rhino...

great album if you're tired hearing the usual "boom tss boom tss" for years and

also the relaxing ambient with the trancy elements that is also repeating

itself in a way.. seems like we all forgot the power of vocals. not short

samples but pure and simple singing that tells the story. you know that thing

the rest of the world is listening to. :)

so if you're one of those who feels his brain is fried from all the types of

electronic music then grab this album! Dreamer.

I'm truly shocked by Freak51 ! "worst-ever Goa record", oh my...

goa?? You may like boom-boom-boom and farting sounds on it, but don't judge

this musical masterpiece with those criterias. I give this a 9/10. It's a

beautiful sound, very nicely produced.

Freak 51, if u calling this Goa is like calling britney spears for techno.

This album is NOT goa, its a pure chilled out experience. And great. 9/10

Really great album. Superb melodies. Well produced. The lyrics contributes to

that chilly sound you love to love. Best tracks are 1,2,4,6 & 8. Especially

track 4, Rumble. It is the masterpiece of the album. 8/10.

I simply love this album! I would't say it's goa or chill, don't know what it

is but it climbed slowly on top of my toplist. I hope its not the last boom

devil.

Well, Freak51 pointed out right what devoted goa-music-lover could actually

think about this album. Yes, the same thoughts hit me too when I gave it first

round. But later on, perhaps, I found "the other side" which was not covered

in his sincere review - lush chilled out chords with trancey elements all over

it, epic journey. Moody experience, esp one of these autumn gloomy afternoons.

Don't know about the vocals - I simply think their presence don't hurt this

album at all. Even though I expected to find smth like in tracks 3,4 when I

was acquiring this album I don't regret these expectations mis-match now and

tend to take it as it gets. Nothing revolutionary here however, as far from

Ninja Tune stuff as from psy-trance scene either. But still refreshing... That

contradictory speaking I finish my review. 7/10 it worth. Tchankov I.V.
