  1. I think Izotope Ozone might be a good choice. I like the balance between ease of use, flexibility, and an organized work layout, particular the graphing. There are quite a few other mastering tools in it as well.
  2. Does sound like a driver issue. Are the clips repeatable? (As in, when you rewind back to when you heard a clip, does it happen again). Do the clips occur even when you turn the amp down to a low level? Do the clips occur when you turn the amp up, but the levels downs in your software? This might help determine if it's a clip from a actual overload, or if it's a clip from a buffer/driver problem. Sometimes, video drivers, network card drivers, and motherboard (chipset) drivers could be the culprit. Might be easier to first test the signal line from your speakers to the computer, making sure it's not a hardware issue outside the computer. Are you playing the CD thru the computer. or is it playing thru a CD player? Check your control panel for any AC97 soundcard settings. Look for entries other than 'Sounds & Audio Devices'. For example, my soundcard at my work computer has a 'Sound Effect Manager', which allows various EQ, sound FX, etc. Also, sometimes when you install a new codec pack, it changes the codec that is being used for playback, applying different settings or filtering, or creating new control panel entries. May be as simple as going thru the settings & removing everything not necessary.
  3. There are 2 approaches here I think when it comes to the software, and how people want to use it: 1) Software that will try to do everything for you, including presets & analyzers. 2) Software that provides you more flexible tools for applying theory & knowledge. Also of note, I think some people's idea's of what mastering is differs from others. Some people may consider EQing all your sounds to fit together mastering, while other may say that is part of the mixing process. Even others will say you sound be paying attention to this in the composing/arranging process. (i.e. I remember Alex Patterson of the Orb once saying in an interview it took 20 minutes to mix & master 'Little Fluffly Clouds' because he made sure different sounds weren't interfering with each other to begin with in the composing stage). Might be able to provide more helpful info if you could describe more of what your looking to do.
  4. I'm not trying to be argumentative, but notice you had to use 3rd party drivers to get it to run properly. I've done the asio4all route with SB card as well, with mixed results. And what if asio4all decided tomorrow that they were done, or wanted to charge for the drivers. What about when problems arise later on? For any piece of computer equipment I buy, I always check out their support section, & see what problems people are running into. But more importantly, I see how responsive the support is to fix problems, and how often they are issuing updates to address known issues, etc. It's nice when it works out of the box, but when it doesn't, what kind of help are you going to get?
  5. SB is a complete waste of money for music. You are seriously better off buying an older sound card from a better company (even 2nd hand), than buying a Sound Blaster. I've found lots of good deals on older 20 bit sound cards from Echo on eBay. Got a barely used Echo Gina 20 bit with break out box (4 in / 4 out) for a friend for like $65 US. I have yet to be disappointed with an Echo product, having now used 2 different soundcards from them. If you can't afford a decent soundcard....wait until you can... seriously! The difference is very well worth it.
  6. Well, saving the file as 16 bit might work, but to change the Hz, you have to use Resample, because 'save as' doesn't offer those options if I remember correctly.
  7. The equivalent for HZ you are talking about is ReSample. Usually a sample played at the incorrect Hz rating will only sound slower or faster. I've never run into an instance where it colored the sound of the sample, but I'm no expert.
  8. MOTU 828 MK2 Echo Indigo DJ I am very happy with both.... money well spent.
