I'd been listening to alot of industrial and The Prodigy throughout highschool. In about 1996 I purchased The Orb's album U.F.Orb.
Not long after that I had my very first experience with psychedelics and put this album on. I'm glad it was there for that (and The Doors) as it had a great impact on my conciousness at the time. There was alot of angry metal and immaturity around otherwise so The Orb's album really stood out and blasted my mind.

What! you loved that album?
IMO this release lacks of everything: no originality, not enough changes from one song to another: there's always that percussion african or whatever influence.
His sound quality is amazing, but you really tripped listening to that?? his songs are going no where, the main melodies keeps coming back. It's like a circle album. Didn't do it for me! tough i'd say.
Ozmali!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you think it's not original then can you state some other older releases or artists that you think sound similar to this, but are better. I'd like to hear them.
Listened to it again today at work. Still enjoy it! The repetition you're referring to is I assume the stuttering, shimmering, electro-melodic style he's used throughout. That's what I like most about the album!
The texture work, layering and bass that backs it up is always varied from track to track. The African percussion element is nowhere near as prominent as you've suggested, IMO. The sound quality is excellent as you said. Some of his electro-instrumentation has a great organic touch to it and I like the mild glitchy feel that he's also sometimes incorporated. I never get bored or tired listening all the way through the CD like I do with heaps of others.
IMO this album reminds me of the heat and wind element and is something I'd listen to in the summer time, especially afternoon.
I never said that I loved it or tripped hardkore off it, nor is this a best of 2009 topic, but out of the 200 or so Psychill/Downtempo releases I've been listening to recently, it stands out as a style of sound that I enjoy listening to. I admit that it has the potential to maybe get a bit boring after some time has passed or if listened to excessively. That I have to wait and find out for.

Yah agreed, there's some repetition.
Huge variation in a release isn't always in an artists idea.
I'll listen to it again soon with your words in mind and write some more about it.

Elea - Stellar Connection also deserves to be mentioned IMO.
Rotwang has done a review for it here.
I've only given this 3-4 listens and am reluctant to say much about it for now. My feelings toward it have only been positive thus far.
Not the greatest album of all time but well worth checking out depending on your tastes. I see how some may not enjoy.
I'll definitely keep an eye on the artist in future.

A release that hasn't been mentioned much yet is oCelot - one.
I warn that I may not use words the way others use them to describe elements.
Some Ocelot purists may not like his deviation from the semi-dark side of the force. This particular release has made me interested in that side of his work.
One is mostly groovy, uplifting and electro-melodic. As far as I'm aware it has it's own funky style of sound. Some mysticism. Some trance. It has both up and down-tempo(predominately) elements and is mixed as one piece and designed to be listened so.
A description I can give for it is that it is as a sonic shimmering mirage with gusts of electro-heat and sun flares riding through it. Great journey.
I was considering writing a full review but found it to be too painful and it was ripping some of the soul out of my relationship to the piece and therefore just wasn't enjoying it as much.

If you feel very strongly that an item on the list doesn't AT ALL belong on a psytrance forum in terms of genre, then state clearly in a post in this topic.
If FIVE people vote an album off it will be removed.
If a listing is excellent but is not specifically classified as "psy-whatever" (e.g. FSOL - Lifeforms, The Orb - U.F.Orb) please try your best to be forgiving.
I'll spam this ^^^ or something similar every time I update the thing. If anyone can think of any other rules, changes, or suggestions that might work, post them.

Quite often there's a dead bug as well!
I spent a year over there.
Shopping in India rocks, I miss it.
Anyway, I got no new music today. I have new music coming out my arse. But I wanted to get a lot of new music.
Jon
-
Yeah, I dig.
I'd suggest to keep it downtempo and psychedelic.
So I reckon Autechre's Quaristice wouldn't fit in, but Amber would. Ah man, you don't know what you got yourself into... either it's gonna expand beyond whatever, or else people are gonna complain it's not "psychill" enough.
The KLF - Chillout is most definitely essential, since it's the album that gave the whole genre its name.
FSOL - Dead Cities
FSOL - ISDN
The Orb - U.F.Orb
The Orb - Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld
Boards of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children
Biosphere - Substrata
All classics that aren't psychill. Monolake doesn't really fit in though, if you ask me.
Nodens Ictus - Spacelines
Eat Static - Back to Earth
VA - Downbeat Liquid
VA - Dissolving Clouds
Unstable Elements - Technical Illusions
Electrypnose - Subliminal Melancholies
Krusseldorf - Smokers Lounge
Don't know if the above have been mentioned yet, but they could be included as well.
A system I was thinking of the day I posted the thing was that if 5 people clearly voted an album off the list because they thought it didn't belong here due to genre, then I'd remove it. What do you think?
Or anyone else please offer your opinions.
So if 3 more people at any stage posted clearly that Monolake doesn't fit. Then it goes.
-
Mwah, that's kinda nonsense.
If so, what are Aphex Twin, The Orb, FSOL and Trentemoller doing on that list, for example?
I wouldn't want them removed, and would quite some other albums, but if you want to keep it psytrance specific, that's hard enough as it is...
Yeah, agreed. It's really hard. I was reluctant to take on the "responsibility" because of it.
I don't mind personally what's on the list because I'm not all that fond of drawing lines in the sand. I think of it all as electronica. It's important to keep things open in all wakes of life. I just wanted to try and keep complaints to a minimum because if it gets too painful then I can't be fucked trying to keep it all together. Should I just let it run free and just add everything suggested? Who am I to judge what should and shouldn't be added? That's why I said I'm not perfect in my knowledge and nor is the list, nor is there such a thing as a perfect list.
Better to have a list than no list, no? But how far should it blow out genre-wise?
"as closely related to the psytrance genre as possible"
People can hopefully use some common sense.
For instance someone would be more inclined to make a topic in the General Psytrance section of the forum about Androcell than they would about Autechre. And hence Androcell "belongs" a little more than Autechre does.
-
hmmm.. how bout Third Ear Audio?
Hey,
I'll try my best to keep the list pure and as closely related to the psytrance genre as possible. For this reason I won't add your suggestion I'm sorry. If you think I'm incorrect please say why.
If anyone feels strongly that any of the albums that are on the list do not belong there in terms of GENRE for a PSYTRANCE specific forum then please say so and I may remove the listing. I am not perfect and this list is not perfect but I figure it's better that it exists for people's convenience than not at all.
Thanks
Jon

What are you even talking about?
Half the stuff on the list isn't very good, and wouldn't be recommended by anyone who I take recommendations from, only some random person named it so you added it to your list. That's why a combined list is useless....
Don't use it?
-
A combined list is actually pretty useless, similar to looking at the combined rating for a release on discogs. You have no idea who recommended what. Ratings are only useful if you know who liked what and how often you like the same things that that person likes. If the goal was just to list chillout releases indiscriminately I could print out my directory list of them (before I delete 3/4 because they aren't worth saving) as a starting point.
These aren't chosen indiscriminately, they've been recommended by people on this forum. If you need to see who has suggested what, then go through the thread that I sourced this from, which I've linked to at the top of the list. Or go through this thread which I will also use for further additions. I won't just add things silently, entries must be publicly stated by a user. This list is not designed to be the end all of quality, it's just there. If you wish to use it you can, if you're unsure of an entry on it then get off your arse and listen to some samples. Copy and paste entries into google (or other search engine) and hunt around for detailed reviews or opinions from a wide variety of sources. Lists like these can be a useful starting point, but don't expect to be spoon fed.

I was drawn to this release from the first time I saw it.
Listened to the samples only for a few months.
Just gave it my first true listen after receiving the CD today and was blown away. Very nice!

You missed Ocelot gem
Do you mean "One"?
Aye it is a gem and a worthy addition, was thinking of it today, was going to give it more time to settle before suggesting it.

The older thread was getting a bit messy and difficult to keep track of so I thought I'd do this.
All suggestions/additions/subtractions/edits/complaints/etc welcomed.
Hopefully this is helpful to some.
I have to go to work.

No, this is sourced from all suggestions out of this topic on Psynews.

Ocelot - One (Avatar)
This is a great release. I hope you enjoy it as much as I.
I've been meaning to review the thing with my n00b skills.
I might give it a seventh listen now on the way to work!
-
Cool.
I've been keeping my eye on this one for awhile now, though haven't had the chance to listen to any samples yet.
Hopefully the sound lives up to the title of the album.
I like the artwork and font choices for both albums.

gosh Crowman, thats a very nice list of albums you got there
It is! Took me almost a full day of listening to samples/reading this weekend to compile it. Only one of those albums I've heard in full is The Magus. Can't wait!
I really have to slow down my purchases from here though. "Needed" to round out my growing collection with more uptempo and a bit of classical material before I did.
I've set aside a weekly budget that I'll try my best to adhere to.
What new music did you get today?
