  1. Hey all -

IMO this topic has turned out way better than I ever expected and really thank everyone for tuning in and contributing.

What is interesting to me is that I really was looking for non-psy ELECTRONIC releases, but have gotten some great

recommendations for non electronic music anyway and I find it very enjoyable.

As a lover of sooooo much music that I could never have time to listen to it all, I truly love the idea of only making

time for the classics, the timeless masterpieces that make music worth living for. Call it snobby or whatever

I'm just finding out that life is too short to waste on music that really doesn't matter. And I'm not one of those guys

who thinks that the stuff I'm not really in to personally is not important or classic or whatever just because its not in a

vein that really moves me. But I do like enough music that almost no genres are left out (country music and mtv pop though...)

So, in the spirit of how this thread has evolved, I will roll with everyone and deviate a little to share some of the albums

I consider to be masterpiece classics that are not psy, not electronic, and I believe have not been mentioned on here yet.

anyway there is my additional 2 cents worth about some sorta psychedelic, or at least trippy music with a wide range of influences that really rocks my world when I'm not listening to Psy or Techno...

these albums are definitely essential as musical pieces but I understand this progressive rock thing does not appeal to everyone

if you ever want to give it a chance though - these are truly the great ones

not a definitive list by any means, but a good list to start with.

Thanks for participating in this thread everyone, I think its very flavorful and fun to be a part of.

    Cheers

  2. No one else like SA psy the most?

I got your back my friend

SA stuff for me for sure

    Timecode, Nexus etc...

Phyx, Abomination, Artifakt, Broken Toy, Tickets, Hydraglyph, Shift, Twisted System, Frozen Ghost and a host of others

    Love that South African sound...

If I had to choose any other besides SA or Goa it would probably be prog

  3. Freestyle Fellowship- To whom it may concern (the finest west coast old school underground LP)

    @rino

for a tekno head kinda guy, you sure do have good taste in hip hop music

I used to love the stuff myself, could not get enough of the real mc's who had skill and contributed something new to the music

but lately all rap has just lost its flavor, the industry is really dead IMO and its having an effect on my ability to listen

even to the old stuff I loved because I have so soured to hip hop music

    Nas - BIG - Jay - Em - Eric B & Rakim, Cube - Kane - Mobb Deep - Beasties - Gangstarr - Public Enemy

and all things Wu-Tang related (GZA - Method Man - RZA - Ghostface - Cappadonna - Sunz Of Man - Killarmy - Gravediggaz - Deck - Raekwon)

these are the top notch artists of all times (of course I prolly missed a few but you know)

All great stuff, but still - I'd rather listen to Psy, Techno (the real stuff, thanks rino) and old 70s progressive rock ala ELP, Genesis, King Crimson and Yes.

  4. The Fugees - The Score (used to be the best selling hip hop album ever, not so sure if it's still that way... essential nonetheless tho'!)

Sadly, "Outkast - Speakerboxxx/ The Love Below" is the highest selling hip hop album of all time at 11 million copies.

Eminem's Slim Shady LP and Marshall Mathers LP both sold 10 million.

  5. OK everyone,

If you're like me, you have probably tried to organize and re-organize, and re-re-organize your music library

to get all your tunes in to nice little pockets so you can easily find everything.

Also, though -- if you're like me, you prolly run into the constant problem of categorizing the stuff

that is not directly NAILED by a certain genre.

Examples of the main categories (IMO)

    Full-on

    Darkpsy

    Prog

    Goa

    SA/Dark-on

    Suomi

    Ambient

[and obviously these genres can have morning & night sections]

and so on and so on... my real trouble comes with stuff like old IM, or Eat Static, Hux Flux, S.M.I.L.E., Skazi (just to name a few)

We always see people using "Psy" or "Psytrance" as a way to label all the stuff that does not neatly fit elsewhere.

But WTF? How the hell does Psy always end up as a sub-category of itself?

My challenge to Psynewsers... come up with a fitting name to replace this horribly misplaced and poorly tagged sub-category.

We need a good catch-all -- something besides Psy or Psytrance.

Psy to me means all of it, the whole scene...

Anyway - I'm not saying I have the answer, but I know there are many brilliant minds on this forum and I'd love to see what you come up with.

    Hit me...

    and as always

    PsyON

  6. So far so good everyone..

    Really loving the suggestions

Its exactly what I need too, because of my lack of experience

with all the non psy music

I'm finding that there is more and more music I really love

I just don't know what it is yet!!! :D

    Keep the lists coming...

    Cheers

  7. For me, Psy IS the drug.

I used to use a lot of different narcotics and enjoyed a lot of the different experiences I had while using them.

Now that I am older, and a devout Christian, I no longer use illicit drugs.

As such, I do still like music that creates a certain type of euphoria and state of mind

that reminds me a lot of the old days.

This is how I really still enjoy the music even though I neither believe in any of the above mentioned themes

(except for God of course) nor use drugs. The music really just is the medicine, IMO.

There is an awful lot to be enjoyed in this music regardless of what you believe or use.

I just try to take it all for what it is, like reading important books or studying philosophers,

writers, artists and scientists who hold different views. It is still educational.

In the end, its really just music right?

But it is fun to trip out a little to trippy music.

And yes, I still stay up late, light candles and incense and dream about my younger years,

just with a clear and sober mind now.

Great thread my friend, thanks for posting.

    Cheers

  8. So I was looking on Ektoplazm at Basilisk's "essential selections"

and it has been very helpful to explore some of the more important, good and historical psy releases.

(Excellent resource btw, and you should check it out) http://www.ektoplazm.com/projects/essential-selections/

As a fan of all types of electronic music, I am wondering...

What are the most important/great albums from the history of non-psy electronic music?

I'd love to see your lists of the albums every fan MUST have/hear or at least respect.

You can take from Techno, House, Breakbeat, Drum n Bass, Dubstep, Minimal, Tech-House, Electro... anything really.

I look forward to seeing what my fellow psynewsers come up with.

Cheers, and thanks for checking out this post.

  9. I dig them all

each has a little different variation on the flavour which I think makes them all rich in their own right

Personally I chose Heliopolis, maybe because its the one I have listened to most

Or possibly just to not be on the Daze bandwagon (which I love btw)

Anyway - love the Filteria sounds

keep on making the juicy goodness - I love it all

    PsyON

  10. One other thought I had that would make the site even more cool than it is now

is to add your tags to the recommendations section.

Be very cool for people to browse through your essentials lists by tag.

At least I think it would be cool.

Plus it really helps to know the style as you are investigating artists

and records you may have never heard before.

Anyway - my 2 extra cents.

    Love Ektoplazm...

    peace

  11. i think the problem in the US is hip hop is a monopoly and has massive marketing behind it.

hip hop has destroyed everything here in america

not just music, but culture, language, clothing, television - EVERYTHING

just can't believe the consumers still just gobble it up no matter how trite and unoriginal it is

and the music is terrible... its just unlistenable garbage and it rules the roost

too bad...I wish we had more psy/electro/tech-house/ambient etc producers that could get

even 1% of the money and marketing that hip hop gets

then america could really see some good music

but the rule here is "if it aint on mtv, it aint music"

and I can't even get started with whats wrong with the rest of american music

producers/live artists/DJs - PLEASE MAKE THE AMERICAN PSY SCENE STRONGER

much love and respect to all

  12. Thug psy.

Hoe slapping hippie gangztaz tossin' up their KFC meals 6 feet up in the air.

Cadillac laced pimpz flossin' thick gold chains with platinum shiva symbols hanging down their hairy and unwashed chest.

gangpsty it is very possible that hip hop could ruin Psy like it has absolutely destroyed everything else its touched

would not be surprised if some darkpsy/gangsta rap etc was the next big thing. hard bass lines and brash drum sounds

with some guy blathering on about bitches and spinnaz

ok I'm going now, might actually throw up
