I am happy, but this doesn't keep me from wondering why the mixer was designed this way.
As said before, a dB is always relative to something, so there's no such thing as 'a dB meter'. dBFS =/= dB SPL =/= Vu =/= ... There's nothing wrong with your mixer, it just has different meters than your DAW. The meter in your DAW is a dBFS meter, which means that a signal will clip if it goes over the threshold of 0 dB. However, with your analog mixer you can see that there is more headroom: after 0dB you have numbers going up to, for example, 14dB. Compare it with measuring in inches and centimetres. 10 centimetres = 3.9 inch, that doesn't mean that something is 'smaller' when measured in inches.

of course not!
it was just a piece of information.
Okay, I was afraid that you'd suggest to limit the shit out of it.
-
also, -13,8db rms seems a little bit too low imho. If played on a radio it will be very noticably lower in volume comparably
But for own use it doesn't matter.

Came for the review, stayed for the penis.
Errrr I mean, nice review, thanks.

Very thoughtful to name it after Sideffect, and as I said before I like the variation in the tracklist.
About the 'lovely' mastering: I thought this release was going to be an example of dynamic music? It's compressed like most of the other newschool releases, pretty sad...

i have experimented with this some time ago and found it best to just take high pitched saws/squares and filter them down to nearly a sine wave. you can also use a sine oscillator, but otherwise you can add a bit of attack with the envelope or add a bit of character by opening the filter up a little bit.
Triangles are better imo, but still, I would rather take a sine from a digital synth with an actual sine osc than an analog triangle, for a more "true" sine feel. Imho, of course.

I couldn't disagree more. Ableton has major sound quality issues that you wouldn't encounter with logic or Cubase etc.

"major"
How many of us are so experienced and have a top notch studio that they can hear the difference between the same mix out of different DAW's? I know FL more than 7 years, Pro Tools 3 years (postproduction) and I wouldn't tell. And I think that counts for most of us bedroom producers.
Besides, it also depends if you use plugins or if you do it with hardware, what kind of hardware/plugins you use, instruments, workflow, ...

I'm searching for Indian instruments to sound like Shakta & Moonweed - Micronesia (1:04:56), I found MOTU Ethno Instrument 2, and the Roland SR-JV80-14 Asia sound board. Any other suggestion to have nice tablas and sitar?
I bought a Super JV a month ago (it's pretty cheap), and there are great sitar samples and other ethnic sounding stuff (percussion/strings) in that module, I love it.

There are hardly people making goa trance with analog synths, let alone analog sequencers.
-
Link an LFO to the pitch, and play with the rate/frequency of the LFO. I think this kind of sound is done with self-oscillation of the filters, but there are more ways to get a sound like that.

Maybe because it's a complete ripoff of Ambient Galaxy? =) Either that or a remix, but there's never any credit given to AP. I still don't understand the backgroundstory of this track...

Damn good question

303 with distortion you mean, at the first second?
-
No, that doesn't follow. What follows is that there would not have been music made with computers back in the 90's that required a lot of computationally intensive processing (e.g. reverb, convolution, Fourier synthesis - the sort of things I expect are involved in recreating the sounds of analogue synths) on a large number of different layers. That wouldn't rule out people making something like house or DnB on a 90's computer, but it would make it harder for people to make something that involved a large number of different layers that recreated the sounds of analogue synths - like, say, Goa trance. Are you aware of any old-school artists who made Goa trance using only software in the 90's? I'm not claiming there weren't any; as I said, I have no experience with music software that I didn't write and my guesses could be completely wrong, and I will happily concede as much if someone who knows what they're talking about (with all due respect, that does not include Radi) tells me so.
Psylent Buddhi using Rebirth, but I guess that's one of the exceptions.
But why talk about layers, if I may ask? With hardware you can make goa trance with 16 tracks or less and a multifx processor if you want. It's not because more layers are used that it's "more goa trance", that's just a choice (or limit) from the producer.
Edit: shit, I missed my 303th post!

"Arcade-I"?
At least that's what Rome: Total War has taught me
OT: the KOB track sounds great, why is it that he doesn't want to produce such music anymore?
-
Very nice, I hope I can go!
On a different note: I've mentioned it before a time ago, but Dave Young - indeed, mr. Chi-A.D., was apparently according to discogs part of the pioneers of black metal! How cool is that ^^
-
Indeed... Are these unmastered samples perhaps? I know it is old school style but there is almost zero low freq bass? Hmmm
To get the record straight: you don't know what bass is unless it's an oldschool bass. Can't seem to find the samples though (they don't appear in the link), are they different than the ones posted already?

Didn't want to sound harsh, but the discussions I had (offline & online) with believers were quite uncomfortable: there's no room for debate, no room for questioning one's own arguments (except the ones of the non-believer of course), and there's always some degree of denying the scientific facts from people who actually study something regarding the weather and atmosphere. Instead, people are feeding themselves with "information" from obscure websites and guru's. I think it fits the same category as all the end of the world theories, or conspiracies that claim that all the politicians are some sort of alien reptiles, or scientology, etc.

- make something up or interpret something wrong
- no place for questions: anyone who doesn't believe this is a fool or 'someone from the system'
- bend all facts in order to make the theories work
21th century religion...

This is truly a fantastic release, humorous and touching sometimes. I just finished listening it for the first time, and the journey between the different genres and styles is so interesting, all because of that great tracklist and order. Something to cherish. I'm really looking forward to the following release!

Overwind and Phosphorescence are one of my favourites, love the brooding, almost mystical feel of these tracks.

Alien Airport and Superbooster are great too, lovely melodic stuff!
-
There are some very nice oldschool elements in it, some things sound really good! I'd probably buy it if it wasn't for the horrible mastering, it makes it all sound soooo flat.
-
Pretty intense indeed, I like your taste!
-
I have the Korg Legacy collection, as well as the actual synths they emulate, and even though it doesn't sound that bad, the software is incomparable with the analogue synths. Have you ever compared them, listened to them, touched and tweaked them with your own hands?
Especially newschool goa sounds dull and unsharp, so many synths, noone sounding really sharp make it tyring.
Now I don't understand it anymore; you say vst's sound the same as the old classical synths, yet 'newschool sounds dull', while most newschool artist use these plugins...
