  1. I don\'t think it has much to do with intelligence and rather with your personal & emotional background...

I mean, there are lots of dumbasses in the scene, and that counts for every kind of music.

Unfortunately I wouldn\'t really know as there is no psy scene here. Maybe someone could comment on the overall intelligence in the psy scene vs. other types of music like pop or rap or whatever? I\'m sure there will always be dumbasses listening to every kind of music, and many people who listen to psy music for different reasons or get something different out of it than myself, but I\'d be interested if, on the whole, you meet a lot smarter people in the psy scene.

Let\'s say emotional intelligence & experiences overrule IQ in this matter. Your feelings towards the world will play a big role in your choice of music.

For example, if I\'d say that that the \"glue\" between all Psytrance lovers is their attraction to the unknown and fantastic, I\'m pretty sure that most of you

would agree. That would mean that Psytrance lovers are usually to be found in the emotional category of people that are fascinated by the unknown.

What do you think, does this make sense? :)

It makes sense, but I can\'t really comment on whether it\'s true or not.

On Topic: well, I don\'t think there is a link between intelligence and goa trance whatsoever... Altough I do think people that are hyperkinetic tend to listen easier to this kind of music

Maybe the music makes them hyperkinetic.
  2. I think it requires more intelligence simply to process all that audio information! There could be many different layers and multiple melodies interacting with each other and slowly evolving throughout the track, which is moving at a fast pace, and yet I am able to comprehend it all in real time and follow the intricacies.

However I usually only enjoy goa trance. I find most full-on psytrance just hard and loud, usually containing lots of layers that don\'t work together properly => noisy.

So I am unsure here, perhaps someone could further comment: Do people actually enjoy psytrance tracks in the way I enjoy good goa trance tracks? Am I not intelligent enough to understand full-on tracks, or perhaps I am too intelligent and realize there is nothing behind all those layers of effects?

  3. Not too long ago I put some etnica-tracks on my friends\' mp3 player (he\'s into hiphop / mainstream stuff) and he said he could enjoy it somewhat but he can\'t listen to it all the time cause it drives him crazy. It was okay as background music he said. Made me think about patience one has for music..

He (and most of my friends) really liked Hunab Ku - Matrix though :P

Etnica has lots of weaker tracks that really aren\'t good for much other than background music....
  4. Here are some noteworthy newschool samples in my opinion.

    ETHEREAL - Cosmic Lobster <2003>

Comment: I like the start & end, the middle is OK, but it could be more interesting!

SPACE VIBES SYSTEM - Astral Dance <2006>

Comment: Great start! Could be slightly more interesting.

    RA - Time Current <2008>

I\'m wondering about Har-El\'s newer albums, but never heard them. :)

  5. Similar no. After all I never said that Ra is a copycat. He has his own style. But his albums smells like Goa from miles if you know what I mean. There\'s nothing non Goa-ish in this album.

Once again, I\'m not using the word stereotypical as abad thing. AP are sterotypical Goa too, but they\'re Gods.

STEREOTYPICAL means that it\'s common to the whole group.

So Ra & D5 are \"goa trance\", hence they have the general features in common with all \"goa trance\" by definition, but beyond that you say you can\'t point me to any track that\'s similar to them, so they must be pretty unique within the genre. (There are hundreds of other artists...!) Therefore they are obviously not stereotypical. (I wish there were more tracks like them, so if you know of any don\'t hesitate to list them...!)

POWERFUL means strong, forceful, in control, etc.

Of all goa trance I\'ve heard, D5 & Ra have the largest build ups, most moving melodies and strongest atmosphere. They don\'t let up after 2 minutes and drift into a new little melody; they don\'t have a million different sounds going at once -- neither of which make a track powerful per say.

So how about this... listen to, say, Ra - Astral Flight, Hunab Ku - Matrix, and Dimension 5 - Psychic Influence. Then please recommend me some more powerful tracks because I\'m always interested in these.... ;)

Back to these newschool releases there are a couple things I will say about them after just listening to some Khetzal, Filteria, Goasia, and Pandemonium!:

    1) They are TRY-HARD. By this I mean they appear to be trying to maximize the number of sounds in their mediocre track, rather than arranging what they have into something great. More sounds doesn\'t make their music more appealing, it just makes it wearisome and makes me shake my head.

    2) They are UNCREATIVE. I don\'t think there\'s any original elements in their music? They even all sound the same to me, and they\'re recycling things that were creative 10 years ago.

I wish these new artists would listen to some Chi-AD and try to follow Dave Young\'s example. Most of his tracks have really unique overall sounds to them, different atmospheres, and on top of that creative melodies and sounds. They are never loaded with sounds just for the sake of it. (I can\'t speak for his latest albums, but up to 2002 at least!) Top notch really. I\'m truly interested in whether they are capable of producing something good....

Ethereal is one newer group that I found pretty good. Most of their tracks weren\'t great overall, but they had a creative style and weren\'t trying too hard. (Cosmic Lobster rocks...!!) I also think Ra - 9th is pretty creative and much better than these other newschool releases, though it\'s of course not the greatest either.

  6. No offence to Ra or the Ra fans, but Ra (and D5) ain\'t stereotypical Goa?

They are the perfect example of stereotypical Goa! And of course I\'m not using the word stereotypical in a bad meaning.

Can you point me in the direction of some goa tracks that are similar to Ra and D5?

From the other hand Filteria (and especially Sky Input) ain\'t that sterotypical. Even these random sounds you said he uses, are not something stereotypical in Goa, maybe In Psy, but not in Goa.

I\'m trying really hard to remember a Goa track that has this sounds chaos behind the main synth. Maybe some Pleiadians tracks, but just that.

Plus Filteria is waaayyy too aggressive to be called stereotypical Goa.

That\'s why I called it try-hard. Making chaos behind the main synth isn\'t not as good as making intelligible music behind the main synth. To what extent Pleiadians actually did this is debatable IMO, but I think most of these newschool artists are just throwing in chaotic layers to obfuscate their crappy music. And it just comes out of the speakers as noise to me for the most part.

Relating this back to Ra & D5, there is never chaos in their music, it\'s always clearly defined and there\'s nothing just \"thrown in there\" for extra effect. That, and that their music is always really powerful and melodic (excluding some of D5\'s Second Phaze), seems to be the common divisor between Ra & D5 and their other subgroups.

Actually radi 9th has the same melodies in the whole track. That\'s the only thing I didn\'t like to this (very good) album. The same reason I never loved D5. Once you listened the first minute you have pretty much listened to the whole track.

This is not something bad of course, but I prefer that in ambient. In dance music I want twists \'n turns.

AFAIC tracks are supposed to have the same melodies. That doesn\'t mean they\'re boring if they use them properly and build them up and down and vary them. I view it more as a sign of weakness when melodies change drastically within the track -- it\'s like the artist didn\'t know what to do after a couple minutes so he just decided to switch to a new melody to try and save his track from being boring!
