  1. Hey Elysium,

no doubt your knowledge of the early days is better than mine, and my use of the word 'released' was inappropriate, but TIP, by which I mean The Infinity Project and not the label as a whole, formed in 1989. The made music and played it a parties.

I quote from an interview with Raja:

"so here we came back from Goa, its '89. I meet my partner from this group we formed called the Infinity Project,T.I.P., the Infinity Project. I met him on the street one day, very weird

cosmic meeting. He hardly played any instruments at all. He played a little bit of guitar. But he didn't have any electronics and he

wasn't really interested in electronics. Somehow he came back to my house. I showed him what I was doing. He started picking up

on it and coming around frequently. Before very long, he was much better on the equipment than I was. And we suddenly realized,

we were making this sort of music. And we started making some tracks. And then we had a brilliant idea on December the 15th, 1989. We would have a party. And it was my 50th birthday and my daughters birthday parties. So we decided that we'd have a joint birthday party. And so she invited 200 friends, I invited 200 friends, we hired a place in the west end, in Smith Market area in the West end, a basement, and we put on a free party. During this party, we played the two tracks we had written, 'Kicking with Boris', and 'I Love My Baby'. Both tracks have never been released. And during the night, when everyone was dancing, these tracks were played and to our astonishment, people liked it. They didn't run off the dance floor. I don't know how much they liked it, but they liked it enough it sounded okay, and we thought to ourselves, man, this of course you have to remember there was hardly anybody in the U.K. There was no one making trance. There was no trance or Goa parties. I mean you have to put it in perspective. At that time, you could go into a record shop, and it was impossible to buy any of this music. It didn't exist. So the following year, I went back to Goa, as I did for the next eight years. "

Sounds to me like they had formed a little before 1994 ??

I would love to hear those two tracks... maybe oneday.

  2. One of the things that makes Shpongle so special is that it they have a very individual sound, but there are many many chillout artists who make fantastic stuff that you should like if you enjoy Shpongle.

If you are looking for some Shpongley elements - dub beats, eastern influences etc, then I go along with all that bugbread has mentioned, but would add:

  9. Of the tracks I know on the mix (about half of them I think) it looks as though it would be a pleasurable and varied journey. I'll try to download it when I am in the land of fast connections...

I also have a lot of homemade chillout compilations and mixes from my radio show - so far 12 hour-long mixed shows or 12 eighty-minute unmixed compilations. If you are interested in the tracklists and getting copies from me, let me know.

  10. yeah - I have been moved to tears by quite a few pieces of music. Generally I am not talking about floods of tears, but more a watering like when you are suddenly overwhelmed by the beauty of the world or have a mystical experience. A lot of really well crafted and emotional chill stuff does it to me - Shpongle of course, but more things like Drift's Arc en ciel, FSOL's my kingdom, MOTY, Subsurfing's frozen ants etc etc. Some really awesome dancefloor stuff has taken me there too, as well as classical and modern classical music (Steve Reich's music for 18 musicians etc.) It is a really wonderful experience that a bunch of air molecules oscillating could transmit such spiritual power.

  11. Perhaps it would have been better put 'unwanted behaviour'. The scene does need to keep it's integrity whilst being accessible to anyone who enjoys the music. I don't mean the music needs to be more accessible - but I think the parties could be. How many parties are done in venues with disabled access. Somehow Greg Sams manages to get to most places (as anyone who is familiar with him will have noticed) - but he's a bit exceptional.

Of course I don't like to see the kind of behaviour some of you describe, but I wouldn't want to turn anyone who was enjoying the party away.
