I always wanted to come to a party in SA - I went there for a few months as a little kid and I have such vivid colourful memories of the place. I climbed table mountain the day before my 4th b'day and remember getting the nectar out of a beautiful red flower that grows on the trees around there. Definitely a place I'd like to return to.
I have one question though Skragg...
how settled is the race issue these days. I am white and am married to an Indian woman - and in some countries we are not treated too well as a mixed race couple... what are your honest opinions about our chances in SA ?

Chances are I still won't be able to come Afghanfan, as my in-laws are visiting and travelling through Europe with my wife & I. Still, let me know the details...
As for the science shack... probably would be fun especially if I tried to make it themed on something like environmental technology. I think I'd have to do it in the UK though to have access to all the bits I'd need.

I like the design, colouring & lettering (much better than before). Having said that, I am a bit tired of the computer/3D graphics style of cover that seems so popular with trance stuff. I would maybe prefer something hand drawn/painted. I am not saying that this isn't artistic - obviously it is and I certainly couldn't do it. It's just that I find really crazy psychedelic paintings to be much more potent and organic.
Stuff like Alex Grey, Brahma, Giger, Tim Smile, NOS, Inga Bourin etc. or the old Gandalf's Garden stuff of the 60s.
Just my taste I guess.

I have to say that nice digipack design can be a lot more practical - they don't crack so easily and generally the little plastic bits that hold the hole in the cd are less flimsy.
Digipack can have an insert too - Juno Reactors Shango has some pics inside, and some come with a slit to put a pull-out section.
But the main advantage of jewel cases is that if the get messed up they are easily replaced.

Järsimähäiriö - don't be so sure about that part time cock job...
I don't know - the workplace is usually wet and smelly, the pressure to perform is always on - and just when you come up with your best produce, a lot of people just spit it out in disgust.

I know you are making your own choices Mike - and that's a fine list you have there - but if you are trying to represent the oldschool, I am surprised there's no Transwave, Prana, Total Eclipse etc. - you know - the classics.

try posting this topic a few more times. If you post it more than 100 times, Microsoft will give you $30 000 for your party.
actually, I have a bunch of names and phone numbers - mainly of British producers - who might be willing to come over if you're planning a big event. But my advise is keep it small and homegrown - they are the best parties in general.

I am very very glad to hear that! A new Celtic Cross would just about make my year I think. Thanks a lot Damion for putting these questions to Simon.

darn it - if you made it a week later or a week earlier I could probably come (I graduate on the 28th but I am going to Strasbourg before then and Paris afterwards...)
Nevermind... I'll be there in spirit... think of me as having a little science shack for you all to come and do experiments and work out how the universe does what it does best...

I would love to play a chillout set in Canada (Toronto or vicinity) sometime when I'm over there... any of you guys connected...?

Digital Sun are Linus Wessel, Sebastian Krueger and Victor Harder.
Their album was released twice - slightly different the second time around I think.
I have Re-collection
Nice flowing morning stuff. Nothing too challenging or groundbreaking but very enjoyable. Highlight for me is Space Flipper.

The Butterfly trilogy is great, but if you like the posford touch go for Magnetica and if you crave the flavour of Greg Hunter listen to Concrete Tourist.

the only thing industrial about the dub of 'liquid dub volume 7' is it's strength! A very good full power album.(It was of course supposed to be liquid dub volume 1 except for a typo!!!)

The thing is there's just sooooo much out there!
Emos Dale has listed many of the A-list in terms of what should be accessible from the starting point of a taste for psy trance. And EA is totally spot on about the styles of chillout available. I figured I mention a few more well known essentials and then a list of things I really like that should be explored once you've covered the A-list...
Dub Trees
Kumba Mela Experiment
Padmasana
Ochi Brothers
Subsurfing
Digital Mystery Tour
The B list is not necessarily less good than the A list - just less immediately related to psy trance...
Toires
Afro Celt Sound System
Jon Hopkins
Sounds from the Ground
Children of Dub
Angel Tears
Global Communication
Aural Float
Spectre
Deep Dive Corp
Woob
Anahata
Loop Guru
Healer
Dreadzone
Ekko
Foundland
Ju Ju Space Jazz
Sanjiva
TJ Rehmi
The Irresistible Force
that should get you started!!!
Of course, there are essential compilations too... but I suggest you visit the chillout reviews section and see what you find there.
let me know if you want more details about any of these

L'esperanza was my favourite SV track... beautiful.

depends a lot on the bit rate of the original mp3. If it's over 192kbps then you should be fine for listening on lower quality headphones etc.

A very solid compilation of electronically flavoured beats. Highlights are
Ooze, Eric Elser, Jules Verne & Tripplegame. Not absolutely essential, but
well worthwhile if you are a fan of chillout material. 7/10

I think Mark Allen has always played quite peculiar stuff, but usually very good. His explorations mix on rtts is splendid.

Review:
This is Humphrey's second voyage at the helm of the liquid sound design
spaceship. His first venture brought us Mana Medicine to heal the soul and
weren't we grateful! As if we didn't have enough to thank the LSD dream team
for already they give us this. Elucidations is another album that any chillout
lover shouldn't be without. Where Mana Medicine focussed on the ethnic
influences on this music style, Elucidations offers a more sneaky bleepy trip
of low velocity psychedelic treats. So a little about the tracks. I am
beginning to think that all that Ott touches turns to liquid gold. Perhaps not
the finest work with the Ott stamp on it, but still first class. Rich, rootsy
and can't fail to put a smile on your face - just a shame it ends a bit
abruptly. Then it's Kiwa. From out of the Scandinavian forests, something
wicked this way comes? I have heard and loved some of Kiwa's dancefloor
tracks, but didn't really expect chilling to be on the agenda. How wrong I was
- this is tight, wonderfully weird and strangely beautiful music. The sort of
thing Matsuri might have stuck on sympathy in chaos 4 if there had been one!
Drum Druids is Jez Laughing Buddha in another guise. I can't say I'm surprised
that this is great? it just sneaks up on you getting gradually more intense
until toes are tapping and your head is spinning. Humito is Humphrey and Chris
Ingeoussauria. This stuff is clever, subtle and intricate. Avoiding an obvious
melody this just tweaks and cranks the synapses while the body is held down by
a slow and steady bassline. Violet Vision take over and turn up the
funkometer. Psychedelic and splendidly evolving? certainly taking Shpongle and
Deviant Electronics influences but by no means imitating. Lusine ICL is jazz
meets electronica meets lounge. Quality stuff. The Kumba Mela - one of the
best tracks from one of the best chillout albums (This is a track from East of
the river ganges - not a new release). Enough said. Abacus opens beautifully -
a brief ethnic twist and then into a gem with a lounge beat smattered with
acidic noising and weird strings, vocoded chants and the like. Not a million
miles away from Ju Ju Space Jazz perhaps. Humito finish the album off in
similar fashion to the earlier track - intelligent and intriguing with breaks
and complex rythms. There are no weak tracks on this album - though some are
more to my taste than others. This shows the maturity that the psychedelic
chillout scene is capable of and I strongly recommend it. Sometimes chillout
needs the warmth of catchy hooks and melodies, and that's not really on the
agenda here. Nor is it truly ambient. But if you are looking for quietly
clever, psychoactive brainfood to lie back to?welcome to the spaceship. 8/10
ambient artists??

Green Mouse,
I know it's a bit arbitrary - but I would say that Angel tears is more in line with say Deep Forest than it is say Shpongle. I should probably have made no distinction, just made a list.
