  1. I think here I have to disagree as well. I've not used FL much but I reckon their audio engine is as good as any other, perhaps a little different, but not radically. To be honest all developers now understand the process of sound creation in software very well and I doubt any of them (excpet perhaps some freeware ones) are doing much different inside from the others. All internal engines will be floating point double precission (sorry about the spelling) and only at the final stage will it be rendered down to whatever your hardware sound card can handle. This final rendering will make a slight difference but I doubt you can hear it without specialised equipment. Hosts only differ (for me) in the way they ask you to use them (the GUI) and the features they offer. Pick a host and love it ! Andy
  2. I've got the PCR-30 (very similar to the M1) which I use with Sonar. However I think the clue for you is to look at the section in the manual on how to use the M1 as a control surface. I know thats the settings I use with Sonar. I think its a case of getting the keyboard in the right mode (I think it will be in the appendix) and then tell your sequencer you've got a control surface. Andy
  3. OK, recording automation. I'm assuming you've got your synth i place and the midi automation is working right (as per the previous message). We need to arm a parameter for automation. In the Track Inspector pick the remote controlled setting and pick arm for automation. It should now have a red surround like the Q parameter below: Now when you are ready to record the automation press the record automation button on the transport bar (circled in red below) The transport should start and twidling the knob should give you a automation recording as below: You now have a automation graph you can edit and move around if you wish (you can do that with midi automations as well but you need to use the paino roll view to do that). Hope this all helps in some way. Andy
  4. Actually I've remembered what to do now (I've been using Project 5 V2 a lot, it's a bit easier in that I think). In the picture below I've got a TAU vsti. I've made sure the track inspector is showing by pressing I (it's on the left here) Make sure the FX is showing by pressing the FX button on the bottom (circled in red) until it goes blue. Note that now we have the synths settings showing in the track inspector (circled in green) Right click on the setting you want to control and pick "remote control". You should get this dialog box: Now turn a knob on the controller and once you stop turning it (an before you press anything else) press the learn button. You should see the dialog box to show what midi message you've just programmed. You can now go on to record the midi control as before (previous message). I'll post another message about recording the changes as automation instead next. Andy
  5. Nope, just different ! Lets see if I have this correct. You've got something like this set up: So midi 1 is controling the VSTi Reaktor Session. You've got a controller keyboard attached on a midi port which has some knobs on it ? You want to turn a knob and contol a button on the Reaktor ? OK, Open the VSTi and find out how it's midi learn works. Use that to learn the midi knob you are ontrolling. In my case here (with a PCR 30 keyboard) I open the Reaktor interface and right click on a knob and select learn. I then twist a knob and it should learn it. Now you want to record the knob twists realtime ? In Sonar press the R button on the MIDI track so it goes red. Once ready start recording and twisting the controller knob. The display will look something like this: Is that what you are after ? If your VSTi doesn't have a midi learn, let me know and I'll work out what to do. Andy
  6. Listening now, love the begining with the water drop sounds, nice. Yeah well chilled throughout. Not really sure about the break at around 4:20 though, came across as a little agressive for this tune. Andy
  7. Ph_ I think the main thing I want to say is the tracks all seem a little on the quiet side. I don't know what host (sequencer) your using but you may want to look at putting a compressor (multiband if possible) on the main out and then follwo it with a limiter (such as Classic Master Limiter http://www.kvraudio.com/get/650.html ) to get a spot more volume.   12. Try increasing the audio latancy. So if it reads something like 5ms try increasing it to 10ms, or even higher. Sorry I don't know cubase so I can't tell you where the settings are located. Andy
  13. If your looking for a hardware vocoder, the one on the Korg Ms2000 or the MicroKorg is more than reasonable. Really quite flexable. Andy

  18. Well you don't say how much you've got to spend or the application, so here's a few thoughts from me. (click on the bold for more info) If you want a cheap laptop interface then the Edirol UA-20xis around £100 at the moment. It's 2 in and 2 out, the inputs can be switched between line level and mic level. However because it's USB 1.1 the latency can only really be switched down to 10ms making it not so good for live use. As a basic card though I found it worked great. The next up from that is the Terratec Phase 24Firewire at £179. I've not used one myself but the older Phase 24 got a lot of good writeups. I know a lot of people like the M-Audio M-Audio FW-410 at around £225 now. One thing to watch out for, although it says it has 4 in, 10 out that's really only 2 in 8 out unless you have external converters around. Finally on the portable range, I really like the Edirol FA101 firewire interface at £299. Thats 10 in, 10 out (again really 8 in, 8 out without converters). Both the FA101 and FW410 come with 2 preamps for mics etc. Outside of the external interface the M-Audio range is good as well, I've used the M-Audio Delta 44 myself, 4 in and 4 out for £115, the Delta 66 is a bit more expensive and after than you could go all the way up to the Delta 1010 for £340. All the prices are from Turnkey. Hope that helps. Andy
  19. Definitly worth continuing ! I know it's early days but I'd bring the string sounds up quite a lot before going on. On my system here, the wispering is hard to hear as well, could be my system though. Andy
  20. Well this is true generally (it's mostly a matter of floating point maths etc) there are some differences in the way ausio engines do their work. For instance Sonar 4 has introduced a "variable pan law", one reason was to allow it to sound more like other sequencers. Sonar 4 also introduced POW-r3 dithering , again for the final mixdown to wav or to the soundcard. This too will change the sound of the final mix (you can change the dithering algorithm in Sonar 4 if you wish). Andy

  22. It's a lttle compression trick to make the kick sound louder. Put the kick on it's own channel, route a aux channel to a compressor (with a lot of compression on it) and mix a little of that that back into the main output (probably before the final limiter but after the multi compressor). I think thats about right. Andy

  24. Have you tried a little New York compression on that ? You've got some really nice analogue sounding stuff there but it all sounds a little overpowering, not really letting the beats and grooves through. What instruments did you use for the synths sounds anyway ? Andy
