It's why people create their playlists on various evil websites and drop a few bucks in the box at a local bar when out with friends. It's also why DJing went from a very niche hobby in the 80s and 90s to something pervasive throughout society. We all carry with us a soundtrack that brought us to where we are today. The songs influencing our next favorite albums and songs opening the doors of entirely new tones, connecting us with new beats, opening new ways of dancing. Songs you find new friends through and ones you find yourself singing loudly with loved ones at three in the morning after reminiscing about the week's activities. Earlier this year I was feeling in a bit of a rut and lost musically. I decided to dedicate time each week to "Band Practice." Instead of just listening to records through the turntable connected to the main stereo or DJing some randomness, I pulled out another turntable and hooked it up to my DJ mixer so I can start reconnecting with music of my past, the songs that got me to where I am today. I wanted to practice some scratching and battle mixing, create live mash-ups on the fly, experiment with things I have lost sight of over the years. The hope was: If I can reconnect with the old me, maybe I can remember why I am me. This mix covers six-decades of music one might have found on jukeboxes over the years and songs that shaped how I listen to, and interact with, music and the world. From the 70s to today, whether it's disco to jazzy hip hop, political rap to synth pop, alternative grunge to sing-a-longs, anthems and theme songs to punk. West coast or east coast, Swedish, Dutch, Australian, or somewhere on that British isle; originals, mash-ups, remixes; released and unreleased; this jukebox has a bit of everything*. I hope this mix carries you through the rest of the summer and brightens up the soundtrack of your own future. This world a flaming cesspool of fucking garbage; try to not let it get you down. We're stronger together and it's better to just put another quarter in the jukebox, smile, and drown out the noise while being with those you hold dear. Kindness is punk. (*other than Goa) PS: If you or someone you know is filling out a line-up for any downtempo / second stage and are looking to broaden the energy contained therein, feel free to reach out; I'd be happy to be your future jukebox.
