Review:

 

Ok, it's time to write something intelligent and informative about this new

release from Dragonfly. Hmm. Well, I've grown really fond of Order Odonata

Vol. 5 so when this came out a couple of weeks ago I was pretty excited. But

as it is very often the case, I was very disappointed after the first couple

of listens.. (What's is this - the mother-cliché of all reviews? :-D) . But

now it's grown on me! (Stop it!;-O). All the tracks here are unreleased, and

the artist are pretty much from all over the world.. Well, Scandinavia, The

UK, Israel and Kiwi Country! *s*. If I have to compare the music-style on

this CD to anything else, I think it would be a hybrid between "Something

For The Weekend" & "Movers & Groovers 2" with a bit a psy-techno thrown in!.

The new "beach-house-sexy-trance-kinda-going-commercial-techfunk" that's

becoming the new "British Labels Sound". Anyone catch my drift here? I hope

so!

. I'll take you through the tracks now: #1 is one of my all time fav'es

Koxbox under one of their aliases Saiko-Pod. No matter what these geniuses -

and my fellow countrymen - do, it's done with such perfection and the

results are always flawless! Brilliant, laid back track. A very nice start

for this comp! #2 is a bit harder track from the well-know Swedes. Has a

weird, but cool ending. Decent track! #3 by Aphid Moon is a dark, monotone

track. I guess it sounds ok, it just gets a little boring if you're not in a

psy-tech mood! #4 has a very nice, break-beat'y/minimal intro and I guess

that sums up the track. Nothing special here. #5 is from terror-minimalist

Noma, so of course this track is riddled with heavy, dark pounding basses.

Very monotone, and like #3 you have to been in a psy-tech mood to enjoy this

track. It's very nice though! #6 is also a very good track, though in a very

different style. There's no mistaking who remixed this track, 'cause the

track is sprayed with samples saying "Paranoid Sunglasses". All in all, a

nice track!. Up next is #7 which again is a darkish, though melodic track

from IsrAlien Sandman. Pretty amazing stuff! On #8 we're back in the UK,

with a fantastic Seb Taylor creation. Has a pretty cool intro: "This might

be hard for you to understand, but there is no conspiracy. Nobody is in

charge. It's a headless blunder operating under the illusion of a

masterplan. Can you grasp that? Big brother is not watching you!". Yeah, and

the track is just as cool, at the intro! Finally, there's #9 from the master

himself. I am of course talking of Benji Vaughan, and this track has left me

snow-blind in the middle of the summer! :-D .In the beginning it has this

REALLY annoying sound. I think it can best be described as a

monster-psychedelic hornet or something being f*** by John Candy! That sound

is in this track! *g*. But, you get used to the sound, and it gets less

annoying, and actually this is a fairly good track.. Sprinkled around are

Apollo 13/Age Of Aquarius samples, and together with nice layering, it makes

a very decent track!. Stand-outs are 1, 6, 8 & 9! Oh, and extra points in my

cool-book, for the cool coverart. Nice variety of styles too!! Rating

8.5/10! Bom shankar and have a VERY LUSH summer!

Well well well... I'm not sure what I think of this album yet.... but here's a

little tidbit: that "no conspiracy" voice sample is froma little-known

Canadian (yay!) movie called Cube, and was ALREADY used in a track by (I think

he's a Canuck) Loose Id of Ultrabeat on his track which is also called

"Cube".... and it was done a while ago... check it out at

www.innerverse.com/ub/

 

BTW I'm just a huge Ultrabeat fan, and am in no way affiliated with them or

their music.....

In my honest opinion Dragonfly's music has slowed down. I hated to buy this

Comp on CD because I am a vinyl dj and it seems dragonfly isn't planning on

releasing this on vinyl sadly...

 

I would say if you like more house you'd like this album but this is not for

goa freaks.

Dragonfly has gone more to the progressive side, but with Order Donata 6 they

show that they won't be letting go of their psychedelic roots. This album has

some great timeless tracks on it, with a few compilation-fillers. The track by

Saiko-Pod is different from their others, more progressive and less layers,

but still Saiko-Pod. Very refreshing... also Aphid Moon has a great track,

with slow, long guitarry sounds. It goes quite deep, and has a groovy sting to

it. The Zodiac Youth track is a real psytrance anthem which will definately

fill the floors, lots of good humor in it, and a peak that you don't forget

after hearing it once. The Sandman track is in my opinion the best track from

an Israeli I know; very organic, and it gets deeper and deeper... If you only

like 'goa psytrance' like GMS you probably don't like this much, but it's

great quality music. Dragonfly will not dy out like a lot of other labels

have...

Well, after the 3rd Order Odonata I parted ways with this legendary series of

compilation, to come back now and find it still on the right track. More

clubby, as seems to be the case with all UK trance (and not only...) these

days (get out to nature ppl!!!), but still psychedelic, moving, interesting

and fun to listen to. This compilation has been a favorite with me the last

few weeks.

It opens with a very clubby, almost housey tune, but very groovy as usual from

Saiko-Pod. Not my cup of Chai. Vibrasphere dub us with the groovy crunchy Nino

Loco (T2)- happy and loony jumpy one. Aphid Moon (T3) continue into darker

realms with a lot of percussive joy and irresistible groove, and an atmosphere

and sounds that remind me of old wild psytrance of few years back- a gem. Than

it's Kiwi time with another goody from Pylon (T5)- an atmospheric driving dark

groovy and percussive tune. Another favorite here and another name from New

Zealand to remember after Pitch Black and Antix. Noma Follows with an

in-between Noma track (T6)- that is, in-between his dark minimal stuff (like

the album) and penetrating emotional dawnish stuff (like his Medium releases).

Nice one, but could use a global cut. Then it's veterans' time when Zodiac

Youth (T6) meet with Yoad Nevo (one of Israel's trance pioneers that

disappeared and one of the best sound technicians in Israel) with a trippy

tribal tune colored in nature morning sounds. Some old fashion hectic

psychedelia in today's cloths. Enter Sandman! and with a surprise- Jungle Rock

is a hysteric morning anthem- still dipped in loony toony out-of-this-world

psyeffects that only the Sandman can make. I love those Siam-like sounds (for

those who know old 80's Israeli new wave sounds) opening the track. Mr. Shakta

is next with No Conspiracy, nice sounds, but no interesting story. Anyway I

would put this track before the Noma track. Ending the CD is Prometheus with

another crunchy psychotic morning tune to match Sandman's one.

 

Bottom Line: Very nice one from Dragonfly, interesting psychedelic danceable

fun compilation with a nice blend of artists and music. Favorites:2, 3, 4(!),

6(!), 7(!), 9.

"Jungle Rock" - Best track on this compil - Sandman is a hell of a musician !!

Pretty average release....It is not bad but it is not excellent either...sounds

are rather soft and mellow, but as deathposture said beachy - techfunk

trance...I didn't like it at first but after couple of listens it did grew on

me, stll, not that strong...Best songs are : NINO LOCO, EVOLVE ( !!! ), SPACE,

JUNGLE ROCK, NO CONSPIRACY...7.5/10
