Filur - Filur EP

Artist: Filur

Title: Filur EP

Label: Flow

Date: 2002

Track listing:

01. 10'11" Timesteps

02. 08'25" Flumride

Review:

Filur is Sebastian Mullaert's (of Son Kite fame) solo side project.

Let me begin by saying that "Timesteps" is one of the best songs I have

ever heard. I am not normally one for hyperbole, but this release is

just superlative in every regard. It's one of those songs that has

something for everyone: an absolutely punishing kick drum; on par with

the one in "Hi fi Stomp Session", a lovely conga arrangement looped

through most of the track, vocal samples which are run through so many

different filters as to be rendered completely unintelligible (one

reminds me of the intro to "Bittersweet"), and yes, some actual

melodies round out this masterpiece. The track begins with a short

intro, then the congas and the kick drum enter. Seb "tricks" the

listener here, i.e. the kick he brings in at the outset is hard, but

then there's a short break, the bassline comes in, and then the REAL

kick drum starts, and this one is HEAVY beyond belief, so hard, yet so

wonderful... then the synths are gently layered on top of the

percussions, at once subtle and poignant. The song manages to

continually push the intensity limits; more and more effects are added,

and finally it all comes together (around the 7 minute mark) in a

beautiful, soaring, cosmic crescendo. Exquisite. I suppose it would

not be a complete evaluation if I didn't mention the b-side;

while "Flumride" is a solid track, it simply pales in comparison to the

a-side. In any case, "Timesteps" is easily my current favorite, and

one of my best records. This one gets my first 10/10 score for the

year. I close this review with 3 words: Thank you Seb.

Nice review Mescalinium and I couldn't agree more. Seb has proven again that

he's one of the best producers this scene has ever had. Whether you like this

style or not, the production is very high-class and Timesteps may be the

absolute highlight of all tracks he made sofar (Son Kite material included)

This is pounding dynamic Progressive floorfiller stuff with lots of space,

tension and touches of psychedelia. A classic in the genre!

I was kinda tired last night when I wrote the first (short) review,, but this

masterpiece deserves more attention. Timesteps has everything your heart will

ever want. PHAAAAT kick, cool percussion, beautiful floating sounds and

tripped out samples that are fighting with Atmos's "Marktstrasse,

Marktstrasse" to be the coolest sample ever. I have only had this for a week,

but this may very well become my favourite song of all time. I don't think

even Seb has ever done anything this brilliant ( maybe" trying outwards" from

the ooze CD, but that's a different genre). The only thing I dont understand

is why he doesnt release this masterpiece on his own label? Lucky Flow

Records, im sure this will break all of their sales records. Anyway, this is

an absolute "MUST-HAVE-NOW" for everyone, and full-on people, dont be afraid,

this is not Son Kite, there a lots of melodies here, so this is for you, too.

Get it, NOW!!!!!

yet another perfect gem from seb (does he sleep?). it's not good to hoist any

artist on too high a pedestal, but in this case i just can't help it. seb is

redefining trance music as we know it. sonkite/filur/trimatic/qlap/ooze = the

future of electronic psychedelic music. currently, there is no one else out

there with anywhere near his level of dedication, sacrifice, technical skill,

and musical talent. nice one Seb, and keep `em coming!

Never really liked much of Filur stuff before, or even Son Kite (prefer more

melodic stuff). I have to say that Timesteps is a fucking awesome song, its

very powerfull and yet very melodic and beautifull, kinda liky SRange - 2001,

which is of my all time favs. That breakdown towards the end of the songs

sends shivers down my spine.

oh my god , oh my god ! this is awesome , pure trance , done with care and

professionalism ... certainly not chaotic ... just perfect ... both tracks get

my psychedelic 10/10 rating. the best Filur tracks . and this is the start of

2002 ( makes me happy ) what else can we expect from this Sebastian , the

trick behind his masterpieces is probably the fact he creates what he want to

create and certainly not a copycat ... he makes his music with love . reasons

enough to get realy excited while listening ti FILUR !!!!!!!!!!!
