  1. Artist: Asura Title: Atmosphere Label: Altar Records Date: April, 2017 1. Frontiers (Final Mix) 2. Always (LS Vintage Edit) 3. The Bhaktas - Pitre Purus (Asura Remix) 4. Eternal Sunshine (Ambient Mix) 5. Le Souffle Du Vent (Second Mix) 6. Deva Delay 7. Reze (Unreleased Version) 8. The Savers 9. Interlude Sky (Remix) Doesn't add up. Another titanic project in psychedelic ambient and downtempo music has seen a bit of roster turnover and is now the solo project of Charles Farewell. Damn, that's a cool name. Even with the departures however this project attempts to continue where the previous album Radio Universe left off. Always leaning toward the dramatic and symphonic this album does so in places. Opening with a very majestic remix of Frontiers it calls to mind a soundtrack for a major motion picture in the making. Vast and lush. The uptempo Ambient Mix of Eternal Shunshine has resounding percussive booms that demand attention while Le Souffle Du Vent has a groovy swagger that I keep coming back to. Reze is another uptempo effort that combines exotic vocals with worldly instruments and a funky groove. Closing things out is a final uptempo track and it leaves me scratching my head and wondering when Asura became a progressive act. As I mentioned this is more of an uptempo or even progressive trance album than a downtempo one. This project has ventured down this road before, but I didn't think he would make an album like this. I prefer the ambient side way more as I found his uptempo stuff decent, but fairly unremarkable. The majority of this album doesn't contain the depth or gravitas I come to expect. So while pretty good, I found my mind wandering while listening to it. As a matter of fact I wouldn't hesitate to say it's the weakest Asura album to date. Altar Bandcamp Psyshop
  2. Artist: E-mantra Title: Compendium Vol. 1 Label: Melusine Records Date: April, 2017 1. Above the Skies 2017 (Live Version) 2. Approaching Nibiru (2017 Version) 3. Dansul Ielelor (2012 Version) 4. Dark Corners of the Universe (2017 Version) 5. Distant Signals (Rmx 2017 Version) 6. Leviathan 7. Pathfinder (2017 Version) 8. Telluric Waves (2017 Version) While the new guns currently dazzle us with their electronic wizardry we must never forget that a beast of the genre still lurks in the ether. Mr. Carpus has proven himself to be a master of goa trance time and again with 4 albums of blissful and transcendent goa as well as four downtempo chillers. The man is a legend any way you slice it. His style is hypnotic, melodic, and steeped in eerie layers. This digital only release (I hear tale that a CD is in the works) is comprised of previous tracks that have been re-edited and remastered as a thank you to the fans. And it is all that you think it is. Ripping 303's, lush melodies that slowly appear and then drift off into the cosmos, and shifting focus with seamless details. It's darkly mysterious, mystical, and layer heavy. Personally I don't have the time to compare each track with the original, but what I can tell you is that it is a great goa album that fits in nicely with his previous releases. He doesn't take any chances, but does what he does best. If you're a fan of his style then this is a must have. Melusine Records Bandcamp
  3. Artist: E-Clip Title: Biointegrated Design Label: Iono Music Date: April, 2017 1. E-clip & Zen Mechanics - Sundowning 2. E-Clip & Mickey Noise - The One 3. Chemical Bond 4. E-clip & Subliminal Codes - Apex 5. E-clip & Avalon - Isotonic Tuning 6. Radio Entelechy 7. Semifluid Substances 8. Occult Lore 9. Welkin And the award for the most disappointing follow up album goes to...E-clip! "First and foremost I'd like to thank God for without whom nothing is possible. I'd like to thank my family. Of course I'd be remiss if I didn't thank all the expensive software that I used to pump out generic progressive trance tracks. They said we couldn't do it, but I believed! I'd like to thank the label Iono for getting fooled and believing in me after my successful debut album. I realize this is a step backwards with tracks that sound like all other progressive music, but sometimes you have to put in minimal effort and throw creativity out the window if you want to make a mediocre album." I'm exaggerating of course, but really this is not a positive step for this artist. The tracks themselves are decent, but they sound like everyone else. When you set the bar high with a superb debut and compilation tracks, not reaching it has to be disappointment. The lush details and atmosphere of his debut Shuma are noticeably absent as he seemed to move in a more minimal direction. Melodies are not as apparent in a series of tracks that fail to capture the imagination. I would blame it on excessive collaborations, but one, that's never stopped him before, and two, even if that was so most of the tracks are just his. Let me be clear it's not a bad album, but he has shown that he has produced much better stuff than this. Iono Bandcamp Digital Psyshop Beatspace
