    testimonial from Marius-Cristian Burcea @ "Journey to Infinite" RFI Romania

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    "...On "Nova Natura 2" the digital, hard edged world mesh well with organic

    sounds. Side Liner knows what he's doing, and his approach is entirely

    tasteful. He assembled songs from an extraordinary cast that includes: Zero

    Cult, Kick Bong, Cydelix, D.Batistatos, and himself. Even given the high

    standard set by some of the Cosmicleaf label's previous compilations, this

    one is a gem. You'll have to listen. Brilliant..."

    VARIOUS ARTISTS

    Escape From Chaos (Tempest Recordings)

    Unicorn/Cosmicleaf and the Australia's Tempest Recordings clearly share a philosphy, right down to the appearance of several Cosmicleaf artists on this Oz label's first downtempo compilation Escape From Chaos. All tracks are exclusives however, so no overlaps. The underground scene we could loosely call psy-trance and progressive is attracting some fantastic and varied ambient talent, I'm guessing due to the general disregard for barriers and fashion that constrict pretty much every other "dance" genre. Escape From Chaos offers a little more electro grunge and scary bass-heavy sounds than Side Liner's effort but its no less beautiful or substantial. Around half the artists here are local including Terra Nine, Random Designers and Red Eye Express. Guitar sounds among them are popular; lets face it, rock is part of the Australian DNA. All up there's twelve tracks of only slightly varying quality and no duds at all, and once again the massive sci-fi dub of Zero Cult leaves me floating in the stratosphere. A solo album by this gifted Israeli is out soon - watch the skies.

    Review by Djane Original-Rocket

    Mushroom Magazine issue #132 June 06

    ==============================================

    "...As the title suggests: finally a bit of peace...Michael Westcot aka Terra Nine,

    a man that's already compiled so many ambient Cds for other succesful labels

    like ZYX,Green Ant & Tempest, always seems to manage chilled grooves finely

    blended with electronic strings and a load of downbeat to go with it. Wonderfully

    relaxing music with a few classic gems tucked in there. Rating: Psychedelically valuable

    and especially chilled, even if it does occasionally approach 130 bpm. Definitely give it

    a listen. Some of the tracks ar ideal for starting an exciting Dj-set..."

    Review from Revolve Magazine UK

    Reviewer: Nova (Ultimae Records)

    ==============================================

    "VA Escape from Chaos (Tempest)...

    And now something new from upside-down! With "Escape From Chaos", Melbourne-based Tempest Recordings have compiled their first chill-out release from the "Tempest Chill" series, exploring the downtempo side of the label where artists can release the music that please them.

    Featuring on this tasty and different (not much innovative though) compilation is a mixture of established artists such as System7 (with a nice remix of "Alpha Wave") and newcomers from different corners of the world (solid tracks by Side Liner and Zero Cult). The mood is always very positive and the music styles range from dubby breaks to more ambient moments.

    ==============================================

    One fantastic ambient adventure into deeper land of freedom and nowhere.

    12 interwined tracks, which collect into yourself every little tiny "raindrop", and make you "cry" from happiness.

    01. Terra Nine - Foxtrot Alpha - very beautiful and easy starting, with nice and balanced melody and drums.

    02. Spies vs Red Eye Express - Sogno D'Oro - A little diversion from normally sound, but sound interesting.

    03. Eridani vs J West - Zero Crossing - Yes it's Zero Crossing... this explain very good this track - Deep, strong, wonderful!

    04. Random Designers vs Arcane Trickster - Golden Triangle (Terra Nine Remix) - eight minute of epic and melodic balanced sounds. Good work again Terra Nine!

    05. Emu - Homeland - Excellent! Very smooth cymbals, very slow, very pure voice from nowhere...

    06. Side Liner - Moonlight - This track is exactly like Moonlight - Tender, stonger, mighty, powerful, it's "dream reality". Extravagant and perfect - the style of Side Liner.

    07. The Omm Squad vs Psyburbia - The Exploration of Deep Bass - Interesting, and unnormallity ambient track. It's more trip-hop, jazzy with smooth beats, and jigging melody.

    SIDE LINER

    Emotional Diving (Cosmicleaf/Unicorn Music)

    Side Liner aka Nick Miamis runs one of the most creative progressive and psy-trance labels in the world right now. Unicorn is the main label while Cosmicleaf is an outlet for the more ambient-leaning material created by both himself and other artists from around the globe. If you liked either of their first two various-artist collections Chilled On Ice (2004) and Fragile Life (2005) then Miamis' new solo album Emotional Diving is an essential purchase.

    Euphoric and emotional it certainly is, but the crisp, intelligent and varied drum programming alone puts this well above overcooked commercial ambient trance comps for the cafe set. Rhythmically there's elements of electro, breakbeat, dub and 4/4 dance. Layered and strongly melodic, at its best the deep lushness of

    Review from Mike G

    Side Liner's music is brilliantly balanced with spiky sounds, odd machine noises and percussive stabs all deployed in a very musical way. The certain edginess that is fundamental to all intelligent dancefloor trance doesn't have to disappear when crossing into the ambient zone - it just needs rethinking. This is becoming a Cosmicleaf trademark and few labels are doing it better.

    that u will say "one more computer wizard which released music".

    and finally he founds the sound which fit him perfect.

    Emotional chill ambient in the paths of wailing and searching,

    with musicality and emotions , rhythms which demagnetising from stress

    Here we have the debut album of Side Liner, with some original tracks and some remixes.

    The atmosphere of track 1 starts very slowly and peaceful, it gives you something like an “out of body” experience, like if you are seeing something with your eyes closed…by other side, there is a melody that gives a melancholic feeling too.

    Track 2 remixed by Zero Cult have a downbeat formula mixed with some beautiful psy tunes, I think more to the sunshine time…some sounds make me think that this is the end of something that it’s not supposed to end…nice sound

    Track 3 is very lighter…I think it can be the perfect soundtrack for something with an Actimel aspect till some time it’s very pleasing but after, it starts to be a bit repetitive…I think it could evolve a little more.

    Track 4...My cat loves this one, the 2 times that I listened near her she started to sleep the downbeat sounds are there, very playful and criative...very trippy one, especially for the dark hours.

    In track 5 I feel my body like if I’m walking in a dark den, walking very slow...from time to time I can see some light beams coming from the rocks, very bright and peaceful...when comes the break, it seems that I’m finding a lagoon full of water, and here I can choose from two possibilities: to dive into or to come back to the start...you have to listen the rest of the track to know it...very very deep.

    Track 6 is very quiet again...it’s a bit repetitive but has a beautiful women singing that gives some movement and some beauty to the track.

    Track 7 can be used for a passerelle...it has some trip-hop beats, a groovy and hypnotic bassline that I don’t know why but makes me think in some women defiling on a passerelle...

    Track 8 can be called “Puzzle”...it starts with just one piece and second after second it gains one more piece and another and another till we start to see something, some good progressive chilling stuff

    Track 9 is a bit more fast (126bpms)...it has a deep and power bassline in a downtempo mood...another track representing the more progressive side of chillout.

    Track 10 gives again the pacific and mellow atmosphere of the ambient music...some psy tunes very inebriate, mixed with a more classic sound but very deep too.

    Great surprise this Side Liner debut album , all tracks have a nice construction and progression... very relaxing and perfect for listen after some Summer party.

    Review from Etch

    writer of 3D World, InTheMix, Resident Advisor, FasterLouder and Vibewire.

    ========================================================

    Rhythmic Images is the second release in the new In Progress series from Athens-based Unicorn Music. This ten track album is brimming with intricate progressive numbers from three of the scenes hottest talents - Grecian producers par excellence Eniak, Aviron and Sunhize. You can be sure that if Plato was still around he’d be staging killer parties at the Parthenon with these three as headliners!

    New talent Eniak (George Belesis) is the clear star of the album. No relation to the vacuum-powered old school computer, Eniak is a producer that loves ultra bottom-heavy bass and intricate programming. Subtle timbral variety is the aim of the game for this innovative producer and psy-lovers will lap up his loud and bold sound.

    The first of his tunes is Disturbed. It starts slowly, heavy on harmonics and ingenious subtle resonance filters that complement a kicking bass and percussion duel to the death. Pure high-quality dance music. Solidify is equally concerned with unyielding bass. Featuring the phattest of phatt b-lines that drops in around the five minute mark, this track will drive psy-lovers mad with glee. The last of his productions to feature is the frosty Liquid Ice. This tune slowly builds into a monster of crystal-tipped ambient washes that float around booming bass and twinkling sine-like melodies.

    Equally impressive are the productions of Nick Petris aka Aviron. With numerous trance releases on the respected Discobole imprint, Aviron’s latest work is a continuation of his unusual sonic experiments. Each Aviron track included on Rhythmic Images goes beyond a simple interplay of bass, percussion and synth work. Instead, his tracks incorporate complex layers of sound that battle to the death for aural supremacy.

    The first of these is Nostoc. Modelled on a day in the life of an aquatic bacteria that loves kicking back on the bottom of freshwater lakes, this cyanobacterial fusion piece is as odd as it sounds. Freaky Dreams is equally strange, a slice of pure twisted psychedelia that is as dark as it is unsettling. Aviron wisely changes tack with Strange People, a tune full of trippy vocal snips that glide over rich keys and sweeping synths packing enough reverb to kill an elephant.

    Leading the final charge are Sunhize (Mike Petropoulos and John Dimitropoulos.) The most experienced of the bunch, their lifelong passion for goa still guides their productions, though the latest pieces to emerge from their talented fingers have been slowly moving toward a slightly groovier prog style. Tracks like Firestorm duck and weave through realms of pure consciousness while the slow burner Darkplay broods along for seven intense minutes. Their last piece, Seduzione, consists of punchy drums and a tight snare lead that floats around a warbling psychedelic synth whirlpool.

    Entrancing stuff - happy listening!

    always welcomed.

    08. Terra Nine vs Random Designers - Entelechy - Good duel, boys & girls! Here we have advantage of one constantly tune, with nice admixture of second, which make this track so "take away".

    09. System 7 - Alpha Wave (Mirror System Remix) - Very nice drums, with strange voice which comes from time to time. Good remix Mirror System, with nice ideas, and good realized of it.

    10. Zero Cult - Utopia Train - What track! So magic, so vigorous...take you away, into another dream space. This power, this beautiful...perfect!

    11. Geo - Glow Motion (Short Edit) - One very, very, very good smooth, and chilly slow motion ambient ....

    Ambientmusicguide.com Review of Chill On Ice “first edition”

    =============================================

    A very high quality album of psychedelic chill from Greek label Cosmicleaf, their first compilation and one that consistently hits the mark. Each of these ten tracks are fully developed pieces traversing a range of moods and beats, setting Chill On Ice well apart from the tuneless beats and unfocused doodling that afflicts the poorer comps in this genre. The featured artists hail mostly from Greece, but also from Israel, Australia, Serbia and Montenegro.

    The ambient spaces between electro, trance, rock and world fusion are fertile ones, and the richness of the sounds on Chill On Ice suggest a group of artists diving headlong into them with passion, open minds and impressive programming skills. There's no room for purists here - the opening "Sardonia" combines a Kraftwerk-style arpeggio with rock guitar in a way that sounds absolutely natural. Bum tracks? None to speak of. Outstanding is Side Liner's "Next Page" with its almost-classic trance breakdown that kicks back in with peaktime dancefloor intensity, despite being half the pace. Zero Cult's "P-Ray" achieves an exquisite tension between its darkly buzzing groove below and sweet piano phrases above. Del & Gen's "Whisper" is all Balearic beauty and uplifting vibes, with a soaring organ chords weaving gently through its layered melodies.

    I could wax lyrical about every track here but I'm sure you get the gist. If you've been waiting years for Spiritzone Records to release another of their famous psy-chill comps then here's a beautiful alternative."

    Ambientmusicguide.com Label Review

    =============================================

    Like Aleph Zero and Ultimae Records, Cosmicleaf is one of a new wave of labels from the global progressive and psy-trance underground that is reinventing dance music for the ambient zone beyond just stripping away the fast tempos. The global talent such labels are attracting is inspiring. These two wonderful albums have both darkness and light, familar genre sounds and strange new sounds, a mindset open to genuine variety and which understands "beautiful" is something profound, not cheesy or trite.

    ========================================================

    ==========================================================

    Chris Bravos and Vasilis Filios are Percussion Bullet, a new duo whose music has been eagerly snapped up by Athens-based label Unicorn Music. Unicorn sprang into life at the start of 2003, riding the seemingly endless wave of Greece’s love for progressive/psy-trance. Greek labels Acid Dance (Xenomorph!) and Candyflip have consistently put out some amazing psychedelic music over the years and Unicorn, the newest of the bunch, has worked alongside these labels to boost the countries musical profile. Percussion Bullet’s Future Accommodation is the first of Unicorn’s new In Progress series designed to showcase some of the world’s finest, though lesser known, progressive producers.

    It’s a sad fact that most prog pumped out these days is beginning to sound tired and passé. The good stuff is frustratingly thin on the ground. In fact bandying about the word prog is almost guaranteed to result in chinstrokers coming to verbal fisticuffs and is actually quite regressive. Whatever manner of beast prog actually is, its myriad splinter-genres have unarguably been thrashed to within an inch of their musical lives. Future Accommodation is unfortunately no progressive panacea, but it does standout as a very solid debut.

    Saturated with spacey atmospherics and teeming with warm textures, Future Accommodation glides through dreamy soundscapes where the imagination frolics and runs free. There is a distinct clubby edge to most of the tracks, though sprinkled throughout are moments of ambient angelic beauty where tendrils of synth twirl over crystalline washes and ticklish percussion. Each track has been structured with algebraic precision and reveals new sounds with each listen.

    Transparent Thought opens the album up, slowly building into a bubbling little gurgler. Its aquatic sonic ripples and Bedrock-styled production slowly lead into the mesmerising clapping of Wool Gather’s tribal beats. After this musical juju, Music is Our Future sulks along for seven long minutes before surrendering to the whirlpool of sine and twang found in Project.

    The best of the bunch are Show Me Love and The Dusk. The breakdown of The Dusk features a haunting vox reverb that would destroy any dancefloor lucky enough to experience it. Show Me Love on the other hand is an introspective brooder that features subtle and tastefully placed vocal stabs layered over foggy sweeps and warm pads. Two truly mesmerising songs.

    Skipping ahead finds Cydelix lending his psychedelic sound to Maxipulate. Unfortunately his usual upfront style has been lost along the way and Maxipulate ends up sounding a touch out of place. Next in line is Revulsion (Alegro Mix) that takes awhile to get going, but when it does, hang on! Crisp and emotive, it’s a perfect lead into the remix effort from Unicorn head-honcho Nick Miamis. His remix of Walk Away under his chill out Side Liner alter ego is best described as juiced up left-field Thievery Corporation.

    Give Percussion Bullet a shot, you won’t be disappointed.

    ============================

    01. Regenesis

    As expected the album opens with an Old-School sounding Goa track the way they were made back in the old days. The round Bassdrum, the uplifting, shifting and multilayered melodies as well as the hectic and frenetic feeling that we used to enjoy so much. It's a lovely track indeed - it's nice to still hear that a few artists out there focus on the good ol' melody...

    02: The Battery

    We continue this album with more of the same. The track opens with som mystical melodies combined with a playfull bassline. The melodies all work well, and there is also a sense of variation, even though alot of the synths, sounds and effects used sounds rather simular. There is also a clear sense of building, and the track seems to grow in intensity from beginning to end with the occational break in between. Solid - the battery is fully charged!!

    03: Message (vs. Mendark)

    "Message" is made together with fellow melodic trancer Mendark. The two did the first installment of the "purple energy" series on the same label a while ago so they should be no strangers to eascother.... This track opens in much the same way as the two previous tracks did, with mystical and atmospheric melodies. When the bass kicks in however this shifts perhaps a tad more into the full-on'ish direction. Don't worry though, the melody-work and the general "feel" of the track is still largely rooted in Goa. And as the track progresses the full-on elements more or less disappears. Another nice track!

    04: Mission to the Moon

    This track opens in what might be the coolest intro of the album. Some alien melodies fuse with some marvelous ambience to create euphoria in the mind of an old hippie such as my self. Unfortunately the track doesn't really deliver what the intro promises. Where the tracks som far has seemed to have a clear direction this to me feels more random - less coherent. Even so, there are moments here that provide great joy and it's ceirtanly not a bad track, just less great than the three previous.

    05: Feeling of Power

    With this track the mood shifts somewhat. Where the melodies so far has been of the spaced out and mysterious sort we now shift gear and end up a tad more on the dark side. The bass also has a more 'modern' feel to it - more stomp-stomp-engine-stuff and less playfull. Even so, this isn't really dark in the sense that the term is often used theese days. It's just that the Goa part is toned down where I'd like to see it kept up.

    06: L.T.F.A

    A long metallic sweep kicks off this track which is perhaps the track on the album is dislike the most. I'd describe it a melodic morning full-on. It's not bad, not at all - infact it sounds better than most music operating within this terretory. The problem however is that it doesn't really seem to fit very well in here and it to som degree breaks the great feeling of this album.

    07: Traveller (vs. Enerkaz)

    To my disappointment the album continues on the path it started with "L.T.F.A" on "Traveller". This track is made together with someone called Enerkaz. Unfortunately I can't provide any more info on the fellow. On the bright side this track has a tad more feeling and groove than the last one, but again - this is essentially full-on and allthogh not being awfull it's not very interesting either.

    08: Universe (Feat. Radical Project)

    "Universe" follow somewhat in the footsteps of the last two tracks. Luckilly for us, though this is excecuted much better, and even though I think it's safe to say we still lurk in full-on waters, this harmonizes much better with the albums obvious flirtations with goa-trance, as it's melodic in "that" way. I recover somewhat from the two previous tracks and regain hope in the albums finishing tracks....

    09: Alien Nation (vs. Visible Noise)

    Alas, It was not to be..."Alien nation"turns out not to be very alien at all. Infact it turns out to be some sort of generic funn-on mush that I'd excpect to find on the more comercially oriented tranceefloors around the world rather than on alien worlds. Not for me - Next!

    10: India (Side liner Rmx)

    Side liner released a rather impressive debut earlier this year, and here he remixes the for me unfamiliar track "India". After a few dissapointing travks towards the end of this album we're served a nice pot of electronic chillage here. The track has tons of space, lush melodies and a slow but hypnotic groove that will make you forget about all that full-on you just forced yourself through. Nice way to finish the album!

    Final Remarks:

    All in all this turned out to be a 50/50 thing for me. I really enjoyed the beginning og this album, and I believe that if Radical distortion had made an album with as great tracks as the first three on this installment it could have had the potential of being the best goa-album since Khetzal, or perhaps even since Ra's "to serious". Unfortunately it was not to be. My advice is to listen to the first five tracks and the skip to the last one.
