  1. The problem is that most really unique artists released one or two albums, sometimes not even an album, and then vanished from the scene. Look at all the amazing compilations from 97-99, full of totally freaky and weird psy-music the likes of which isn't heard any more. One off collaborations, super underground friend-of-a-friend artists.

Spectral had the best morning music of anyone and folded after one album. Same with Acid Rockers and psybreaks. Noosphere released two great goa/tech trance albums and then vanished, there were whispers of Morphem returning but then Raphael died. Chi-A.D. is mostly making games now, IIRC so is Deviant Electronics...

Though I should mention Zirrex as another artist who doesn't really follow anyone else. Lots of new (at least to goa) musical ideas, while still remaining goa.

In R Voice also does some good stuff here and there and is (or was?) very prolific, kinda hard to follow with so many aliases though. :P

Elysium definitely has his own trademark sound too.

We probably need a place (offline) for people to innovate and come up with their own style, without worrying about what genre it slots into. Maybe freeform musical jam/DJ nights at non-trance venues?

  2. I'm curious which format people here prefer to buy, physical CDs or digital files?

Personally, I still buy both. No strong preference between the two, though I tend to go with digital a little more than CD because of no shipping costs/hassle.

To put all cards on the table, I'm releasing a digital album this year, and I may be doing a CD version as well. Depending on how many CD dinosaurs there are :)

  3. It's a good album but I find it too samey throughout; only Zirrex and Katedra stand out as really trying to do something different. The rest is in the same vein: one part Astral's flowing melodies and walls of sound, one part Pleiadians' shredding distortion and spacey sci-fi atmosphere. All of which is pretty great, to be fair. Problem is, it becomes a little overwhelming when faced with three albums' worth of almost exactly the same sound and vibe. DJs and anyone looking to fatten their Goa playlist are going to love this; for extended home listening, you might want to look elsewhere.

The positives: Artifact303 kicks butt in all five of his tracks (I especially liked the closing number, which has an Ozrics-circa-Waterfall Cities kinda feel). Nova Fractal & Oxi & E-Mantra deliver a complex, yet not overstuffed track that's loaded with interesting twists and turns. And Morphic Resonance brings his characteristic teeth rattling intensity with 'Moonwalker', a track that will kill anytime, anywhere. Play this to electro house kiddies, they'll never be able to go back to Knife Party again.

A less conservative approach would serve this label well, and I hope they mix it up a little more in the future. Still, one of the better Goa releases of 2015.

  4. Hmm, since you seem to like smoother sounds prog-psy might be the best fit. I'm not super familiar with the style but Atmos, Stereofeld, Tarsis, Shiva Chandra, Vibrasphere, and Son Kite have some great releases.

For faster goa that still has strong rhythms, check out Shakta, Deviant Electronics, and Uni.

Escape Into, Voice of Cod, and OOOD are some good 'new school' psytrance acts. For something more funky/crazy/experimental without being too dark, try Nervasystem.

You might also try some 'normal trance' on labels like Platipus, and classic pre goa trance on labels like MFS and Harthouse. Where it all began. :)

  5. I can't access SoundCloud or any images from Photobucket, even though both sites are up for everyone else. I've tried clearing my cache, clearing my cookies, resetting my DNS, restarting my computer... nothing works. This has been my situation since last evening. Can anyone suggest a course of action, or do I just need to wait and hope these sites come back for me?

  6. Children of the Bong - Sirius Sound

    TIP - Mystical Experiences

    No arguments there :)

    Spacetime Continuum - Sea Biscuit

    Spacetime Continuum - Emit Ecaps

    Global Communication - 76:14

    Higher Intelligence Agency - Colourform

Tranquility Bass - Let The Freak Flag Fly

    Mantaray - Numinous Island

    FSOL - Lifeforms

    FSOL - ISDN

    System 7 - Point 3 (Water album)

    Autechre - Amber

  7. Not sure who would print this on CD and call it "the best of goa trance & psychedelic techno", especially compared to MFG's godlike album... the lack of an artist name makes me think that whoever made this, doesn't want to be found. :D

    Maybe they're just pshychedelic?
