    8+ hours a day listening to Psy-music at work :-)<br /><br />I'm a Computer Programmer & Musician<br />I live miles from anywhere
  1. Was using it last night with cubase SX, All seemed to work well on that. I did 2 Record passes. Recorded the Notes on the first & went over with the controller date on the second altering the vowels with the pitchbend on the controller. Worked 100%
  2. Thanks Philter .. Have no idea why I didn't think about doing this before..
  3. Could anyone tell me what I need to get two PC monitors to work with XP.. I want to be able to display Cubase on one & sound editing stuff on the other without having to alt-tab.. My Adapter is apparently compatible but not sure what I need to do.. **edit** did I mention :- 1 is an Nvida Geforce , the other is on board AGP.. I also have a few other PCI graphics cards floating around... If I do this will the PC's performance Suffer?? Regards Slam
  4. Remember the pre-broadband days.. Information took time.. The days when Cubase ran on an Atari St , VSTi's had never been heard of & you had to save for ages for the next decent hardware synth.. Although the speed of Hardware has brought us into a new era with unlimited possibility I couldn't help feeling a bit lost when I got yet another PDF user guide for yet another VSTi .. Not sure if anyone else is in the same boat but I feel I'm spending an increasing amount of time reading & learning to use new software whether it's VSTi's or the latest upgrade of sequencer.. At first I didn't mind as it was all new & exciting but I'm wondering how do you find a compromise between learning new instruments & the actual creative part that is picking a chord lick from thin air, developing a beat etc.. I found myself getting extremely frustrated by the amount of re-training I'm having to do & have written nothing for ages as a result.. & worrying that by the time I learn it , the magical lines in my head will have faded... So do I go back to my old faithful setup & write the songs & convert them when I'm up to scratch with the new instruments or is this all part of learning... I'm probably not the only one that finds the sequencing bit tedious as hell & the creative bit enjoyable.. What say yee professionals ???
  5. I'm no expert here but I've a few opinions on personal creativity.. They my not apply to other people but here goes & they may inspire or they may see me flamed to ground.. either way it's better than the C code infront of me so :- I've always felt the musical ideas & phrases which were created during times of personal stress , crisis or tirmoil have always been more melodic, better quality & more numerous. I couldn't sequence them because my head was a bit messed but the music scratchpad filled up very quick. Also this applies to times when things are going great.. I mean really good.. Times when things are just ticking over well , didn't do it.. I think this may be because I beleive music creation can be another form of emotional release if we are keeping things bottled up that can't come out in other ways. whether that's good or bad things.. Try thinking back to times when you wrote your best stuff.. What were you doing??.. what was the bigger picture that was going on in your life at that time.. Can you recreate the scenario in your head & can you relive some of the moments??.. You just need to reverse up the road your on & back onto the creative motorway with many exits.. Take a break from writing Psy.. do some blues , jazz , something completely different.. your mind will bring you back to it when your ready & you may pick up a few extra ideas on the way. Also have a listen to styles you don't like & analyse them optimistically, filtering out & looking for patterns you can understand.. Maybee your mind needs some variation to the theme... Or maybe I'm talking shite & should get back to work, instead of being on this phorum !!!
  6. I stuck to 2000 because I was worried about a decrease in system performance as I saw on my home PC & also because the lads in work were calling it (Windows X-tra P-roblems ).. Upgrading the hardware was never an option unfortunately as family commitments mean money for equipment is tight & monitored.. as is time. Without the performance tweaks to xp from the tweak xp websites www.tweakxp.com & www.musicxp.net , the PC ran a little sluggish as I had predicted but turning off all the crap running in the background which I don't need has sorted that out & it's sweet now. I can finally stop messing & do some proper recording. Oh I won't go near windows vista for a few years until the general public have finished beta testing it for MS.. Regards Slam
  7. Hi Forum Dwellers, It's time for a major sort out & rebuild of the PC.. Won't bore you with the fatality of the current one but when things go wrong it's nice to have a clean build with all drivers/studio software installed ( norton ghost image )... Until now I've been running with the SW1000XG / 2 PLG cards XGpad / Cubase VST 5 / Albino / Absynth / Kontakt & some freebees. on Windows 2000 server custom configured to turn as much off as poss.. I never went to Windows XP as I was waiting to see what other people did but I think now is the time to go across... Anyone advise me on pitfalls / things to watch out for so my day doesn't turn into a week of frustration..( already found the TweakXP site which is great ) The base unit is a Athalon 2000+ , 512MB with a NVDIA Geforce AGP.. I've no money so no possibility of upgrade at the moment.. regards Slam PS... Yes the Athlon 2000+ says 1.3Mhz in the start up screen so it's not a different machine from the one I was talking about in "latency issues" however I did ditch the RAM for 1x 512 stick instead of the two Dimms (128+256) that were in there.. Also ditched Xgedit for XG pad PS the NVDIA card hasn't caused any problems I'm aware of on 2000
  8. mmm I also had the previous Windows 2000 driver from 2001 which didn't have this but have upgraded so that helped... Thanks guys it's been a productive day.. ( for music anyway.. my C coding suffered as a result !!!) Have tomorrow off work so should be able to do something with the time for once.. Bit of reading also solved my other Problem with bad quality in the Mixdown using the loopback on the Soundcard.... It's amazing how sometimes the most complicated solutions are looked at first but it ends up to be something simple... Pans were set wrong on the Channel Regards Slam Dublin ( at the moment ) !!!
  9. Just wondering?? A few years ago ( before I cut down on organic substances ) I discovered that most original & decent, licks & sequences came out at 3am after a night on beer but the tracks were disjointed & out of time ( wonder why? ).. I would then put it together sober at a later date... Also why can I only compose on a Wednesday!!!?? weird Is there a technical term for this ? !? Slam
  10. That's better - Thanks... I'm a happy man now..
  11. Quick Search revealled I alter it at the driver in Control Panel.. Thanks... Maybee I should RTFM.. & stop posting..
  12. Hi Philter, thanks for the tip.. Using the Latest SW1000XG driver into Cubase VST 5.0, Xgedit latest version. Have most of the Free Plugins I could find on the web.. Issue is same on most of them.. I thought it was strange though that it didn't matter how many VST instruments I was using.. Increasing the number of instruments didn't noticably increase the delay or make the problem worse.. I've a lot of reading to do so not sure how to decrease the buffer size but I'll know in a couple of hours. Regards Slam
  13. Hi, I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction here. I've just gone over to using Soft Synths instead of Hardware. I'm running A Yam SW1000XG Soundcard with the AN150 plug in board & VST 5.. I run the Card through XGedit which works great & instantly on a 1.3Ghz Machine ( 300MB Ram ).. I tend to Run Windows 2000 Server as I can turn off all the things the machine won't be needing. With XGedit everything is lighning speed. I've a track using 14 Tracks used in VST & there's no Latency issues as I am assuming the Yam onboard chips are being used. I downloaded a few Plugins like Tau , Crystal etc.. but there is at least a 100ms delay between hitting a note & hearing it. I need to get plugins working as I don't have any cash to spend on anything else. I am assuming the problem is because the processing is being down by the PC not the SW1000XG... Also is there a way of routing a plugin back through the Xgedit so I can add my effects there rather than add more processing by using VST effects.. Any help would be Appreciated Slam
  14. I jump between ... Power-net, PSystream, Cromonova & philosomatika most of the day, depending on my mood in work & the type of programming I'm doing Slam
