  1. What's up? I finished university and moved out. Simultaneously, my web hosting situation deteriorated, with transfer rates dropping from respectable levels to a mere 60 to 90 kb/s at all times. Although I've gone back and forth with my host for weeks now it still isn't fixed. Since I feel like I am out of options, I will be posting up a slew of releases that have been delayed, and apologize in advance for the additional time it will take everyone to download all the new music.

I don't quite know what to do moving forward but hope to make a post about the future of the site in the next little while. I think it's time for some community input as I've been stewing in my own thoughts for far too long. And yes, as noted, it has just been a hobby (a tremendously expensive and time-consuming one, mind you), and now that I'm done school I might not be able to invest as heavily in the site as I have for the past five years. It really depends on what I decide to do in the near future.

  3. I tend to agree with your review, Lemmiwinks. Evening Star is obviously brilliant... the rest is a mix of promising tunes (Bloomen and MakadaM) and some stuff that sounds a little raw and uninspired.

  4. I have totally had this experience at some parties recently... some artists and DJs are completely allergic to anything resembling a hook and yes, all the songs quickly blur together into an unrecognizable mish-mash of beats and breakdowns. This tendency to focus on one specific sound with the "perfect" kick drum and bass line setup is really missing the point... but at least it's a little better than five years ago when DJs were obsessed with unreleased music, no matter how awful it sounded. I'm hoping this emphasis on monotone night music is just a fad. Luckily it's not something I hear everywhere nor does it usually persist for more than a set or two.

Cybernetika returns to Ektoplazm with Colossus, an extraordinary full-length album fusing psychedelic trance and drum ‘n bass with futuristic science fiction atmospheres. Following on the enormous success of last year’s The Scythe Of Orion, which was declared the best free psytrance album of 2010 by Ektoplazm visitors, and building on the genre-bending experimentalism of Atropos (2009), this album delivers exactly what Cybernetika fans have been waiting for: epic storytelling through innovative electronic music. As with his previously releases, Cybernetika has written an epigraph to situate the album within a thematic framework: “As all-consuming waves of entropy were reaching our galaxy, mankind was forced into a desperate battle for survival. With discovered technologies far beyond our understanding, we were able to construct a last bastion against a rapidly dissolving universe, right in the center of our galaxy: The Colossus, a gigantic, artificial shield of protection, preserving stability of space itself. With the Colossus, we can defeat our own destiny…” Track 6 (Humanity: Static) originally written and produced by Vortech. Mastered by Kri @ Audiovalve. Artwork by Stefan Hürlemann.

    4. Uh Oh (128 BPM)

Drumlore presents White Noise In C Major, the first release from Nozem (Raoul Koning AKA Supergroover), a progressive psytrance and techno producer from the Netherlands. Since his studio is located near the Vondelpark, a former meeting place of the 1960s counterculture in the centre of Amsterdam, Raoul decided to name this project “Nozem”, which is a Dutch word for someone who doesn’t adjust to the rules of society. True to form, this boundary-breaking release features pumping techno rhythms and a sound palette heavily influenced by psychedelic trance, a powerful fusion that will rock dance floors around the world. Mastered by Miroslav Bako @ Rocktifex Studio, Serbia.

This set was recorded live at Re:Generate, the name chosen by the Om Reunion Project to set the mood for their summer solstice gathering in 2011. I was scheduled to play on Sunday morning at the Moon Bass stage, a great little setup in a forest clearing on a beautiful piece of land in Southern Ontario. It felt like the right space and time to take a trip into the history of the psychedelic trance subculture so I mixed up a diverse assortment of old school Goa trance classics after sunrise. As always, this set was completely improvised; absolutely nothing was planned prior to stepping on stage to setup my equipment. This musical experience was co-created with a fantastic crowd of people who emerged from the woods to dance with enthusiasm to these old school gems.
