1. Ok, Basslines for Full On Psy that are structured somewhat in this way:

    X c1 c2 c1 X c1 c2 c1 X c1 c2 c1 X c1 c2 c1 (where x is no note)

Tekk, Are you saying here it should be note, note one octave up, note ?

One thing people haven't pointed out is you should make sure the bass and the kick don't interfere with each other, I.E make sure the bass hsa ended before the kick starts and the other way round. An Osciliscope or equivalent VSTi should do the job.

  2. Yes, there are similarities but:

¿4/4?, as Cybernetika said check out metal stuff like Meshuggah, A Life Once Lost, The Dillinger Scape Plan or Converge and tell me how many 4/4 rhythms do you find on each track.

About fast tempo i could say there are loads of down tempo metal bands like

Damn, I knew I shouldn't have generalised ! As I said, metal is a broad church and getitng broader by the day. As you say some bands as exploring the further reches of tempo and metre (hope I've spelt that right) as well as extreme key signitures and like to mix it all up. I'm not sure you basic bigtime rock band does though.

oh, and psychedelic goa is one thing that metal isn't.... : TRIPPY

Erm, Jimmy Hendrix, Purple Haze ? and I suggest you go and listen to the "Space Ritual" right now.

  3. Well I have tried for so many years to understand this music but I simply can't. And I really want to analyse it as far as possible to see if there are some elements that I can understand and maybe enjoy myself too. I can understand all music styles (more or less) except rock and metal so it's very frustrating for me.

Well the first thing to realise is of coure Heavy Metal is a broad a church as dance music. Just as you'll get many many stream "trance fans" who can't stand "Psytrance" you'll get many "big hair" metals fans who can't stand many of the more extreme sub genre's (death, speed etc). So if you're basing your hatred on the stuff you see on TV and radio its understandable. Try some of the more underground bands as other have suggested and maybe you'll hear something you like.

(personally I'd recommend Hawkwind, can't be many "metal" bands that have a album of dance remixes out there).

In terms of music there are I think some similarities between dance and metal, they are both 4/4, relatively fast tempo, usually the same sort of structure (building to a climax) and both are fairly repetative. The main difference (for me) is that dance music is melody based, whereas metal is riff based, I.E its the chord progression that builds the tune, in dance the chord progression is harmonised to the medoldy (yes? no?). Maybe thats the stumbling block ?

  4. Just wondering if you guys know of any good sites that holds good voice/quote samples (*.wav, *.aiff etc). And please don't come with www.moviewavs.com and the likes of that ;)

    thanks!

Try the internet archive www.archive.org . Lots of open copywrite movies and sound clips there. You'll need to do some work on extracting the right clip and checking on the legal uses but it's worth the effort.

  5. hi there

heres a preview of latest track 144 bpm

Yep nice sample, love the funky feel to this one, almost 70's shaft meets Psy...

What did you use for the synth effect at 1:56, 57 ?

Oh, and then you go all thememin at 2:50 ish, very nice ...

  6. So, here's the link to the file (9:18, 192kbps, ~13MB):

    Download Cybernetika - Black Hole

Hope you like it, comments as always wanted and appreciated :)

Love the atmosphere at the start of this track, and the kick when it comes in. For me it seems to take a bit too long to get going (but then at 9 minutes I guess it can take it's time). Yeah overall I love the atmosphere that runs through this. (the ticking cymbal gets a bit much on these little crappy speakers though).

One thing though, (and this isn't a critism of the tune !) isn't there an awefull lot of this stuff that uses NASA or NASA like sample ?

    Andy

  7. so not bad as a whole, work on ur leads and melodies more, and on the general flow of the track...

Thanks mate, that really was the sort of advice I was looking for. Structure wise I was going for 16 bar "phrases", do you think I'd be better off with 32 bars, at least for the start before the bass kicks in ?

  8. Hey Andy

The bass line is good.. its the actual sound of the nass that i didnt like... but then again thats just my opinion... :)

No thats good to know. I'm struggling with bass sounds at the moment !

The distortion sounded like too much compression or limiting at some stage !!

apart from that its nice !!!

    261864

I tracked it down (I think) to too much input on a reverb unit. It was overloading the reverb but of course everything else after that was also distorted. A cleaner version is now on the site.

    Andy

  9. Its nice but sometimes things sound a bit distorted and the bass doesnt sound so good IMO...  :(

    Thanks SunNata,

I always like feedback. I think I may have overdriven a VintageWarmer on the outpust stage (or added a little too much reverb) and gone into distortion, that should be easy to fix !

What is it you don't like about the bass ? Is it the sound or the melody ?

    Andy

  10. Ok, you mean I can make something like that using an equalizer ?

    260265

You could but it would have to be a parmetric filter. Move the center frequency up and down to give the wah effect. I'm sure there's a good wah wah effect out there though. I use the Sonitus one that comes with Sonar 4 myself.

    Andy

  11. Who plays guitar know what I mean.

I wanna know what the wah-wah pedal do. Is it a cut off pedal ? or some other effect like phasing ??

    259838

It's essentially a filter effect, a band pass filter I think. However I don't think you can simulate it using a synths bandpas filter because I think it's shape allows some frequencies above and below the center frequency. So think of it as a band boost filter.

    Does that make sense ?

    Andy

  12. I know it's less convenient but I like to make my own kicks…

Likewise thats why I was asking. We've had a bit a of a discussion over at the Cakewalk Project 5 forum based on the wav file Cybernetika posted. The designer of the Psyn synth pitched in and provided a reasonable patch for that synth.

Have you got a pointer to odo "kick me too 2" ?

    Andy

  13. Thx Daze

    More Psychedelic elements huh... :D

    point noted

Listening now, I like the dry drum sound at least on this system. great little sample at 3.30 ish too l. Not sure about the break at 4:15 though, kinda doesn't quite keep the beat going or give any sense of anticipation. It may need a little more variation on the hats as well.

some great sounds in there though, esp the "cha cha" at 5:15 ish.

    Andy
