Carpe Diem 02. Intercity Review: Human Blue (Dag Wallin) hasn´t released anything for quite a while on Spiral Trax but now it seems like things are moving again. An album is on the way later this year and it´s going to be called "Electric Roundabout". According to the Spiral Trax website: http://www.spiraltrax.com/ is the album going to sound similar to this ep. This is trance not too easy to describe. At first I was about to give this ep a (4/10) or (5/10) but it has grown on me... A LOT! so now I´m glad that I didn´t review it as soon as I got it! Some of you might have understood that I´m mainly into heavier darker stuff, and this release should be so very wrong for me, but the more I listen to it... well it´s getting better all the time. For the last couple of hours I´ve been listening to this ep over and over again. Try to pick out some of your records that "survive" being played over and over again for several hours!!! You won´t find so many, I can promiss you that. How does this ep sound like then? Both tracks are pretty slow and harmonic. Smoth melodylines and warm sounds with a lot of atmosphere. If you liked the album "2001" by S-Range this is something for you, and I have to say that this ep doesn´t sound very much like anything Human Blue has released before (that I´ve heard). This is smoother and a lot warmer with some tech-house elements brilliantly combined with traditional morningfriendly psytrance. If someone would play this when I´m on the dancefloor... well, then it´s a yawner but it works really good at home. "Carpe Diem" (9/10) and "Intercity" (9/10) are two similar tracks but also very different. Both tracks have this warm smooth groove with a touch of sadness. The intensity grows all the time but very very slowly so you can´t compare these two tracks to the stuff I usually give high remarks. This music is created with a lot of layers on top of each other. Both tracks has this awesome flow that´s forcing you to listen just one more time... and you won´t get bored! I thought that this was crap the first couple of times I listened to it so it might be difficult to appreciate after just one go? If you´re into warm, melodic, harmonic scandostuff with subtle changes you´ll love this. I still have a hard time accepting that I like this ;-) You won´t see me praise this kind of music so very often in the future, I can promiss you that :-) The carpet of fluffy sounds may cause you to vomit if you´re sensible to a nice and friendly atmosphere, but I haven´t used my barfbag yet. The record is spinning for the 20th time or something like that now so this ep must be relly really good :-) I might be the wrong person to elect the best morningtrance ep of the year but I would atleast like to nominee this for the title if I´m allowed? I myself am not much into the minimal sound (except yumade, paps and some others) but I am not usually into stuff this fluffy and housy, but Human Blue have made some killer emotional tracks for the early evening or sunrise period in this release. A comendable set of tracks with a similar style but as Stormbringer said, an exciting flow and awesome groove. Intercity is my favorite, but Carpe Diem isn't at all dissapointing. A pleasant release that will appeall to all those who enjoy the more emotional, morning style of things, but apparantly can draw even the diehard midnight minimal fan. Guest Mescalinium Posted October 22, 2001 Share Posted October 22, 2001 I have yet to dislike a Human Blue release, and its also nice to see him back on Spiral Trax, my favorite label as I'm sure some of you know. Stormbringer says he doesn't think of Human Blue as being so melodic in terms of previous releases, but if you back to his first album Ice, and the Stonehenge 12" (also on Spiral Trax), I think one will notice more similarities. Both sides are excellent in my opinion, they share a similar structure and build-up, Carpe Diem has a few more elements going on I think, but again, they're each very nice in their own way. Certainly more on the melodic tip, as mentioned above, but I wouldn't rule out playing it on the dancefloor. Just because heavier/darker/minimal stuff is all the rage these days doesn't mean there's no room for melodic trance. Great release dag, can't wait for the album. 9/10.
