I LOVED their stuff, it was the perfect combination between full-on and goa, it was especially surprising since I totally missed out on it when it was released. I'm really looking forward to hearing their new stuff.

Of course, the remarks are a bit tongue-in-cheek but most of them are quite spot-on IMO And of course, one could make such articles on just about any event (and I think the author does actually), still it's nice that "outsiders" actually take the effort of seeing what's inside the scene rather than just labeling it as a "drug-addict reunion" and moving on -

I'm not that much into drugs, but I have a very hard time to believe that when an artist sits down to write a track he's thinking about what kind of drughead his audience is.
Just because some tracks sound better under an influence of a specific drug (for example ketamine works better with darkpsy like you claim) that doesn't mean that this kind of music is written to appeal to the specififc drug users.
lol didn't it occur to you that maybe the artist himself is using that particular subtance? Electronic music history is FULL of examples of certain styles that became huge at the same time that a certain drug became popular...

well, again, I don't want to come up as a druggie here but this is yet another one of those subgenres that you REALLY dig when you're high (like breakcore for that matter): I remember Texas Faggot playing here in Belgium a while ago and some people went CRAZY on the dancefloor, simply because those wierd unpredictable sounds work veeery well with certain substances... That said, personally, a part from a few exceptions (some of the BEST oldschool-style tracks were made by finnish artists!) I'm not a big fan...

Playing your 33 RPMs at 45 is always funny...
OK, those BPMs don't leave that much space for very personal or characteristic manoeuvres so the genres will inevitably overlap and resemble each other. Basically...
- If it's like an endless sugar overdose, it's happy hardcore or J-pop.
- If the bass is phat and there are remnants of epic trance leads, it's trancecore or freeform (like in 2005).
- If it's a toneless mess and called "Death Satan Holocaust 666", its darkpsy.
- If there's a forest in the cover, it's forest.
- If you pump up the BPM alone at all costs, it's psycore (or eventually speedcore).
- If you add a bit more high-pitched sci-fi FX, it becomes high-tech? I haven't figured out the details yet.
Damn, that freeform stage was possibly the best incarnation of this all. I may excavate my archives from that era again...

I highly doubt that what drugs are you using have anything to do with what music do you listen to. I have friends who smoke pot and listen to greek pop music and I've met guys that take LSD while listening to New Metal.
I think you overestimate the influence of drugs in psytrance. I highly-highly-highly doubt that festivals plan their line ups by taking account what drug is 'hot' at the moment.
BTW wich festivals rely on darkpsy acts? The only ones I know are the ones that have exclusively a dark-ish line up. Otherwise most big, long festivals rely almost exclusively on full on and prog.

Of course it's not an obvious link, there's a continuous feedback, ie. people onto a certain substance will "dig" a certain artist, and the bigger the crowd wanting him, the higher the chances are that he'll be booked at festivals. Now, I don't want to come off as some druggie, and like 98% of the time when I listen to music I'm sober, but claiming that psytrance is NOT made with a certain substance in mind is being WAY into denial mate...

well it just so happens that almost all the people I know of who are like 100% into dark psy are also very much into ketamine... coincidence? I think not
I have also experienced this music on special K and I must admit it DOES make a lot more sense: the ultra-fast bassline prevents you from going to sleep, and all those random screechy WTF noises go well along with the random WTF feeling of a K-trip I mean, just like with psytrance, one COULD apreciate it when sober but little details DO make a lot more sense when you take the substance that the music was designed for... Also, from a practical point of view, really long festivals rely more and more on dark psy... why is that? Take acid 3 days in a row and the 3rd day your tolerance will build up so much that you won't feel much more than drinking a cup of coffee... ketamine on the other hand works indefinately when taken regularly (ok, there's also a tolerance buildup but way less than to psychedelics). The more you think about it, the more it explains stuff on how the scene is turning rececently

I USED to like dark psy, but personally I find it kindof peaked around 2005, there were LOADS of great dark psy tracks at that period like Para Halu - Let The Peace Control Your Body, Ghreg on Earth - Siren Stars, Ocelot - Upward Spiral, Psyfactor - Frear Square, Psykovsky - Corpos Mentis...
Afterwards everything just sounded as a pale copy or a play in the "my shit is faster than yours" game, where artists seem to just throw in random noises on high BPMs... The ONLY dark psy album that I've listened to lately that has some integrity left is Oerstis - Recursive Consiousness

PS I think not many people here realize that this particular substyle is oriented towards ketamine, whereas most psytrance has psychedelics in mind? I think that's the main reason why most people of the "old" generation don't really dig it...

so aparently a new style is taking over the dancefloors recently, it's called High-Tech... it's very very fast (160BPM minimum!), although personally I don't see much of a difference between this and dark psy... I rekon it's yet another sub-style for ketamine lovers out there... What do you guys think?

I'll tell you what I call it: Pop Dance.
It's been around for decades, yet it changes over time. It is made quickly, usually in a few weeks.
It always sells more than the 'underground' variety because it has the catchy melodies and snappy synthesizers.
There is almost never a story or meaning in the music, totally mindless. You can find it all over the world, with a history of sales, distribution is widespread.

It is a really good lineup but alas, we have chosen to go to lost theory as its lineup is a little more rare for us to see. (Goa & Forest Wise, whereas freedom is a loooot of full on/prog) Shpongle & Hallucinogen though gahhhh!
Really wish lost theory wasnt at the exact same dates!

heh that would be a cool idea... although I suppose it would be just a basic phone, in which case you can just put your SIM card into a simple 20€ phone that would hold a charge for like a week, I guess it's a pretty hard equation to solve
Anyway, I did some through research and this is my conclusion:
1st and foremost, look at the charge rating for your device! A closer inspection on cheap solar chargers will show you that most have an output current of less than 500mA, meaning that most devices won't even recognize it as a charger and won't charge at all! That's especially true with very new high-power USB devices who need a current of up to 2.5A just to accept the charge. Which is to say that the solar charger you've just bought would be completely worthless...
Now there are some pretty efficient chargers out there once you weed them out like the Joos Orange and the sCharger-5, the problem is that if you want something worthwhile it will be at least 100€, which is kindof expensive if you plan on just using it for a few days a year...
In the end, the best solution is to buy a powerbank, basically a big battery pack, charge it to the brim before you leave and use it to recharge your devices. There also powerbanks that get trickle-charged by a small solar panel on the back, this has the big advantage of recharging itself with low current produced by the panel but then allowing for a higher current to recharge your device thus bypassing the charger-recognition problem. That said, I'm not sure that letting a battery pack sit in the bright sun all day is a reliable solution, I suppose that the heat would destroy the battery after a while but hey at least they're cheap, you can easily find them in the 20-30€ price range.

so with festival season coming, I was wondering how do you guys keep your electronic gadgets charged when on the go? A few years ago, cellphone batteries lasted days on a single charge so it wasn't much of a problem but now you need to recharge smartphones every day, especially if you take lots of pictures. Last year I used one of the like 20 ac plugs available but I find it annoying to have to wait sometimes for HOURS before finding a free one, so this year I was thinking of getting a nifty solar charger. Problem is, there are THOUSANDS of different models and a bit of extra reading showed me that most of them are just worthless gadgets (like you have to stay in direct sunlight for 20 hours for a full charge, the sun doesn't even shine for that long unless you're going past the Arctic circle lol)
So what do you people use?
