Hedflux exploded onto the unsuspecting breaks scene in 2008 with his seminal tech-breaks masterpiece Music is my Weapon, followed by the relentless “Non-Stop” and his chart-topping remix of Sam Hell’s Gunclub. Now, newly signed to Broken Robot, he teams up with DJ, promoter, record-shop-owner and self-confessed vinyl junkie Tom Wilkes to cook up a recipe which has come to be known as "Basscake".
A no-holds barred acid monster of a tune, Basscake clocks in at 135bpm; the bass-line growls between the pounding drums whilst robotic synth stabs resonate and reverberate overhead. A HUGE 303 line forms the main hook, building to a climax and slamming into full-on screaming reso mayhem. The result can best be described as “like eating a subwoofer and running a 50Hz test tone through it, while on acid".
On the flip, American tech-breaks duo Mathew McCurry and Stephen Cole turn in a gnarly breakbeat rework with a hulking great robotosaur of a bassline; this one is destined to cause injury on the late-night summer dance floors. Watch out for rogue elbows!
German breaks-turned-techno producers Plastic Shell wrap up the package nicely with a minimal interpretation of this maximal tune, working glitchy synth fragments into a wobbly b-line for the altogether deeper dance floor consciousness.
