The Delta - Pop

Artist: The Delta

Title: Pop

Label: D-Drum

Date: 2001

Track listing:

01. Pop (Synthetic Rmx)

02. Pcp From The Carseats

Review:

It´s almost ridiculous how hard it is to find releases from The Delta or

the D.DRUM-label for that matter here in Sweden. I had to wait for more

than six months for their album "Scizoeffective" and this remix 12"

seemed impossible to find anywhere. I´ve ordered it four times without

any luck, and as far as I know only one shop has ever got it here in

Sweden (and they had only three copies). I don´t know if I should laugh

or cry? To review something that´s almost impossible to find... ha ha!

it´s pretty stupid! If you´re able to order stuff directly from Germany

(that´s what I finally did!) then this review still might be worth

reading? The Delta leads the development of the

Tech-Trance-/Psy-Techno-genre, and I just can´t wait to get my hands on

the new album plus the three ep´s soon to be released. Before those

releases are available this remix of the psyhit "Pop" just have to do.

It takes a genius to make something better than the original of "Pop"

(10/10) which I consider to be the second best track from the album by

The Delta, and there is no question about that the skill of Synthetic

(Dado) is great, but in this case the original version still is the best

version. "Pop" (Synthetic Remix) (9/10) has lost too much of the

original darkness and power. The new version hasn´t got the same deep

bass as the original and almost all the atmosphere is gone. It´s still a

true killer, nasty as hell, but the original version got that extra edge

that this remix just don´t got. You should wait for the new releases by

The Delta if you allready own the album. This remix (even though it´s a

very good one) has nothing to offer that´s make it worth bying if you

allready are a lucky owner of the "Scizoeffective" album. The b-side,

"Pcb From The Carseats" (7/10), won´t be remembered as anything else

than a b-side. I like this kind of technostomp (that´s why I give it as

high as 7/10) but I think most psylovers won´t like it. I really hope

the new album has something more to offer than this minimal technoish

sound.

I too think the original Pop is better; I think that most of the time it's a

given that the original is better than the remix. However, I think the remix

by Dado is still a very good song in its own right. True, it does not contain

as many atmospheric effects as the original, but what is removed in this

respect is (almost) made up for by a very distinctive groove, giving the track

more of a psy-techno quality. To make an analogy to my previous statement, I

consider this song similarly to the new haldolium remix of atmos' the only

process; it's certainly and inevitably not as good as the original, but I

still like the song independant of this fact. Anyway, I do agree with

Stormbringer that pcb from the carseats is nothing special. Also, as far as

distribution goes, I personally was able to pick this record up at a shop in

New York (Throb, if you're interested), but I think they just got in a bunch

of D-drum stuff because there was a D-drum label party in New York last month.

I was also able to pick up a copy of D-drum 01, The Delta - Thing, which I

believe is a fairly hard to obtain record, and D-drum 05, Anomolie - Anomolie,

which I don't think had been distributed in the US yet. So I don't know,

maybe I just got lucky ;)

In any case, I'll give the synthetic remix an 8/10.

I actually think PCB For The Carseats is the better track here. It's not as

driving as the Pop remix, not as hard either I believe, but oh my god what a

killer bass! And the percussion is really nice too. I'd give the pop remix

6/10 or possibly a 7, while PCB For The Carseats gets 8 bordering on a 9. I

might have been of a different opinion if I hadn't heard Delta live in

compenhagen in early June this year, where I truly got to understand the

essence of The Delta. Ever since I got this EP, I've been trying to make music

like PCB For The Carseats. Slow (130-135 perhaps? I haven't measured),

insanely bass heavy, distorted rattling yet clean percussion and big moody

ambient sounds on top. This, along with D.Drum 005 (Anomalie) is one of my

favourite EPs at the moment.
