Based in Melbourne, Australia, Dustin has been creating electronic music for over 15 years, playing live and travelling all over Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Europe, and releasing tracks on a multitude of compilations. From as early as 1989 Dustin had been involved in various projects, producing hip hop, drum and bass and chilled out breakbeat music, before evolving into psychedelic trance. His first release as Mr Peculiar came in early 2001, on the Koyote Records compilation "Elephantitis". His debut album "Elements" was released by Tribeadelic in 2002, and silence then he has had tracks featured on compilations from Spirit Zone, Tribeadelic, Beats and Pieces, Spectral, Procyon, Fragile Planet, Sphere, Oxygen, Green Ant and Mindfunk. Also, in collaboration with the Melbourneebased computer animation wizard "The Shapeshifter" he created a fully syncronised DVD entitled "Syncrosect", welding music and animation seamlessly together. With a certain melodic and atmospheric sound that takes the listener beyond boundaries and shoots the mind's eye across the cosmos, Mr Peculiar's "Mind-Dala" stands out as an innovative production in the psychedelic trance sound. -- Review of Mind-Dala from psyreviews.com I have to admit IÂfm almost lost for words. This was a farken hard review to write, and those that know me know how much I love to rant and ramble. Mind-Dala is an album that completely reaffirms your faith in psytrance, telling you that there is decent and original fullon coming out these days, and also reminding you about why you got into this music in the first place. Born On Mars teases before it drops in, and when it does itÂfs well and truly feeding time at the zoo. The production is pure gold, with sounds that make you keep on cranking your speakers up till they shake. Subtle sounds are drawn in to build up to a succulent peak, where a perfect slab of melody comes in and sets things really spinning. Compressing Time is bloody marvellous and all, a deeper sound but no less kaleidoscopicÂc in fact itÂfs nice to hear Mr P in a more restrained, mature style than his previous output. The way the breakdown picks up into a lazy but dust-fuelled drop is simply sublime – itÂfs this whole natural and unforced sound that makes it so appealing. African Soul rolls along delightfully, sounding to me a lot like the kickinÂf ness of Alchemy records at their best, fused with the clean sound of Altom. It all hangs together nicely. Brainsnake is among the finest bit of fullon IÂfve heard this year, thereÂfs a deliciously twisted melody hidden in there than slinks and slides around the place. It picks up into a mesmerising final runÂc thatÂfs impossible to work out quite how it all fits togetherÂc like itÂfs hung from individual streads from high up in the rafters. Mind-Dala has a deep and expansive sound, one of the best examples yet of that fully-immersive sound Mr PeculiarÂfs best at. ItÂfs totally absorbing and very psychedelic, with suggested melodies hovering in the background and this gorgeous, full-surround feel to it. Timeline sees things get mellower and summeryÂc with a fluid bluesy guitar peppered over a wonderfully perfect backboneÂc seriously lovely stuff this folksÂc overwhelming. If you only check one of the samples on Saiko Sounds, make it this one! Crystal Energy is another winner, itÂfs the sort of tune that would be a definite standout if it appeared on a compilation. Its gnarlier than whatÂfs come before it, but no less fluidÂc sounds escalate incredibly deftly, building up into a real stomping soupÂc seriously mindbending stuff. ItÂfs been a while since anything fullon affected me like thisÂc until the next track comes on. Silver Clouds is nothing short of genius, as the whole album starts to come together. Sounds get picked up like debris in a storm, and glide around in a wonderful pattern. Once again whatÂfs staggering here is the feeling that comes out from inside the music. You almost forget that youÂfre listening to a load of computers; this immersive quality is a real winner and the depth of emotion that comes out is second to none. IÂfm almost out of superlatives, but Yellow Solar Human closes the album in a truly classy way, with that restrained and measured approach creeping back in. And this is what sets Mr Peculiar apart from the others. Going back and listening to other fullon, it just seems too forcedÂc too laboured, too stressed and too clichéd. Mind-Dala is a wonderful, brilliant lesson in how psytrance should sound. 10 out of 10

    Oforia - Let It Beat

2nd cd released in arow that is complete tripe. Ive seen this geezer player and he has some stompers up his sleeve, just dont know why he doesnt release them. Getting a bit scared of the direction of psy trance these days-its really going downhill.
  4. Same people writing the same old praising reviews for this piece of techno come house. Lets not confuse the issue, this is nice but hey its not Psy trance-you are more than likely to hear Digweed spinning this at a hairdressers convention and I dont think you will hear Matt Boom spinning this!
  5. Collection of older Flying Rhino tunes. Only Velocity and Fly have been umixed on CD before. All the tracks are pretty nice - mostly dark and psychedelic builders - progressive theories. Certainly worth a listen. I personally find a lot of these tracks very psychedelic - if you listen to them you'll find they really suck you in. I'll give it about a 7 / 10.

    V/A - Single Cell 2

Ok, I feel this is justified to a decent review, as it's a progressive trance CD reviewed by psychedelic trance fans, which doesn't work. This CD is a compilation of previously vinyl-only releases from Atomic. In the last year or so the Atomic crew had been heading in a far more progressive direction, as are all the UK labels [listen to stuff from Dragonfly's Kamaflague sub-label, and Transient and Flying Rhino both have progressive sub-labels on the go]. This release reflects that. With exception of the Menis track pretty much this entire collection could go down very well in a progressive UK club. The production is as always perfect, but there is close to nothing in appeal for anyone searching for something psychedelic. So, if you're after psychedelic, or, heaven forbid, goa trance, avoid this release. But if you like crisp, clean funky progressive trance [note: not progressive psychedelic, true progressive], then pick this up and give it a listen.

    V/A - Adrenalin Take One

Far out man, this really is my kind of sound-long drum rolls, uplifting climaxes, a real true club sound and best of all that feeling that makes you want to take your shirt off-Phonokol keep it coming!!!!
  9. Stormbringer, I might suggest you also check out the Back 2 Basics 12" on Flying Rhino, and the Shape Shifter 12" on Transient [the Shape Shifter 12" is by Tinnitus, a 12 Moons side project]. The Shape Shifter 12" is a little bit more like the 12 Moons material on Digital Structures. The Back 2 Basics is one of my all time favourite late morning stompers. Boom!
  10. Although I haven't heard 'Do U Know?' I really think Yumade's 'Hair Zatz' [143bpm / 6:25] is one of Yumade's better tracks. Yumade seemed to have settled into a bit more of a groove production-wise, and I much prefer them moving more towards the techno edge and away from the technoid sound. 'Hair Zatz' is almost exactly what I'd be wanting to hear in the dark of the night. Lots of gradual filters, reversed percussion, the usual funky stuff that produces a groove while messing with your psyche at the same time. The Yumade track also appears on a Gaia XI compilation, which is why I've heard that and not the Paps.

    V/A - Tantrance 9

why would there be a strong isreali presence if dj alex has compiled it? are you aware that dj alex is a german dj who has compiled most of nova tekk's compilations [tantrance, pulse, goa head, ect]? also, there's only one israeli track on here [california sunshine] and it's more cheesy melodic crap. this cd is good, but only if you haven't been following nova tekk releases. all these tracks are released, and all of them on nt sublabels [with the exception of avatar, gab le mar, the blenn and the california sunshine]. oh, and the slap and ouija tracks don't sound that much like sun project, they don't even have guitars. they're more toward the new progressive german sound. best tracks on this are the four carry nuts, midi miliz, ouija and tarsis. and if you think that delta track is dark, you sure haven't heard the album. and if you think it's goa, you sure have been doing a lot of crack.
