"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.
Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children.
And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.
And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

you mean Pulp Fiction

by the way, a friend of mine says - and keeps saying - that Pulp fiction has no plot
while it damn well does have a plot
Samuel L. Jackson is the Righteous of the two - he listens to this quote and gives up being a gangster - and lives ... while J. Travolta does not give up being a gangster - and dies...

Be Righteous and live!

Yes indeed it has three sources depending on the context :), The bible, Pulp Fiction, or The Mystica song that sampled it.

And one could argue that in the Pulp Fiction context, it can be further divided down to either Samuel L. Jackson or the character/role he plays in the movie who recites it.

And yeah the movie might not follow the standard when it comes to plot/structure, but think it might have one. I haven't seen it in a couple of years so I don't have the narrative/or lack of thereof fresh in memory. Perhaps time to revisit it to see if your friend might have a point. And like you say the movie as I remember it was quite cerebral and had some metaphorical stuff or perhaps it was somekind of meta humour or cultural cross-references, to works in the "pulp fiction genre" I need to watch it again for sure.

"Pulp magazines often contained a wide variety of genre fiction, including, but not limited to,

adventure

aviation

detective/mystery

fantasy

gangster

horror/occult (including "weird menace")

humor

railroad

romance

science fiction

Série Noire (French crime mystery)

"spicy/saucy" (soft porn)

sports

war

Westerns (also see dime Western); the Colorado artist Arthur Roy Mitchell is particularly known for his sketches of the covers of such western magazines.

The American Old West was a mainstay genre of early turn of the 20th century novels as well as later pulp magazines, and lasted longest of all the traditional pulps. In many ways, the later men's adventure ("the sweats") was the replacement of pulps.

Many classic science fiction and crime novels were originally serialized in pulp magazines such as Weird Tales, Amazing Stories, and Black Mask."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulp_magazine

So my guess is that the movie might be inspired by the short stories found in these type of magazines and other movies with a similar style. And my bet is that those shorter stories usually had like a theme/catch phrase like the one you gave "be righteous and live!" Was that a quote from the movie or just your interpretation of the message? :) Reminds me of the moral lessons found in the literrary fable genre.

Btw did you by chance see his latest movie? I haven't yet, kinda curious.
