The Psynews Track?? (second try)

Here's something I started several years ago and never got anywhere with. I don't know if there's anything worthwhile there but it's the best offering I have right now.

The linked ZIP file has a standard MIDI file, a WAV file of the audio below, a WAV file with one of the tracks that isn't in the MIDI file, and a text file.

links are not working (and if i type it into the browser it automatically starts a search because of the spaces). then if i replace them with %20 and try to downnload it stops loading at 55K.

I'm wondering if perhaps the psynews contest forum section which was active the last time 16 years ago or something, could be a thing again? To add some competitive edge to it  Kinda funny browsing through that forum, seeing artists who are now released on several labels, beeing very eager back then to get some recognition. :) If it could inspire some potential new hidden talent out there then why not?

YES there is the plan to revive the contest - I was busy with the rules till recently ... will see, maybe we can launch this...

Huh, it worked for me ... I just copypasted the link text. Browser: Firefox

Listened to it. It's cool stuff so far - instant idea:

Take @Veracohr 's track, enrich it with @Psychedelic Superbeast 's melody number 3 from the first video (the one that starts at 0:39 ... you might have to adapt the tonal relation though so that it matches) ... and the whole thing might develop into something more goatrancey in the progress of the track, ideas for that are still missing in my head though...

I need to get a Cubase (I only can work with Cubase, we used it for Skeletone - but my mate is decomissioning the sudio and takes the Cubase dongle with him, it's his) to be able to participate in this (which I'd be up to) ... and I need to go for a legal one. I'll see what I can afford ... have to get an audio system first ... one after the other :D

What kind of track shoul it be? Goa or Fullon? Or in between?

the things posted up to now suggest goa trance. if we do down that route i could contribute some melodies played with oldschool sounding patches, atmospheres or 909 hatlines. if we go the fullon/psytrance route i could contribute something for every purpose (from knb over percussion, melodies and sweeps to semi-modular fx) but wouldn't want to do the arrangement.

so i guess it's time to decide on the style, bpm and key of the track. unless anyone has any objections, i'd suggest 145 and F because 145 is neither particularly fast nor slow fitting almost any style, and F is easy to play and sits right in the sweep spot where the low end sounds best on most systems.

i also think we need something like a shared dropbox folder where everyone can access all midis and audio files plus add their own input.

I renamed the files with underscores instead of spaces. See if that works.

thanks, yes it does. and it also downloads at a reasonable speed now too (done in a few seconds vs. a handful K per minute)

Well, making the whole arrangement of the pieces people will provide, making the bassline, mixing the whole thing, that would be a lot of work. I can do that and sure it would be interesting to try but I can't promise making it soon, chances are it would be months ... Quite busy with the dayjob and my own projects.

I will post my goa thingy as soon as I've applied the phase align tutorials on it, atm I can't get exoscope to work. Any other comparably good oscilloscope available out there you guys could recommend? I've gotten exoscope to work before, so I'm not sure what's up. Could probably be due they having updated it to work with the latest mac OS which I'm skipping. Gonna see if I can find an older version of exoscope.

smexoscope has a few issues with logic 10.5. in 10.4 i had it on the master all the time. now i only insert it on the channel when i need it for a short time. otherwise the whole project slows down to a crawl.

i really hope they update it soon. it's by far the best oscilloscope at that sort of price point ;)

has some one an idea how we can share files?

not really. i do have 3gb free on my dropbox but with audio we'd probably quickly fill that up.

If you will delete the Psynews stuff from your dropbox after the track is ready...will you get your space back or is it lost/you have to pay again?

I would suggest to work with low quality fragments like mp3 for the moment until we have a "prototype image" of the track. i think we can send them through discord to each other or the person who wants to build the track (Recussion Loop...). in discord you can send 10 MB or so

i didn't pay, it's what i got for free. sure, i'll get my space back, but the point is 3gb isn't a lot. the folders for my tracks are usually around 12gb. while i could surely delete some files in there i think we would amass a lot more files that aren't used because it's such a big collaboration. also i don't think mp3 is a good solution for now. you sometimes want to process audio when working on a track and you'd have to do it all again with the full quality files once it's finished.

so yeah, i could make a public folder and share the links with pm to get us started if you guys want, but i suspect we'll run out of space soon.

I can make a noise or industrial-techno / metal mix...but goa nope :(

Got bored by melodic psy anyway, a track of mine was accepted in a techno contest, so I guess this is more my direction even if I like almost no "newer" techno, strange.

How about REAPER, it can be tried out legally and free for 60 days. It worked on my somewhat older Win7/64bit sys. However I could not get into it really, I de-installed after 3 days. BUT you are not me and might like it :) Plus: cheap.

A new license includes free upgrades through REAPER version 7.99. There is only one version of REAPER. The license price depends on how you use it.

$60 : discounted license.
$225 : commercial license.

You may use the discounted license if:

You are an individual, and REAPER is only for your personal use, or

You are an individual or business using REAPER commercially, and yearly gross revenue does not exceed USD $20,000, or

You are an educational or non-profit organization.

it sounds tempting, but if I get a software, it should be Cubase, because I want to be compatible with the software my producer friend uses - or is REAPER compatible with Cubase both ways ... that would be awesome?

Sorry no idea I have read positive things about Reaper and 60 days "for free trial" + cheap...this sounds like a fair offer to me. :)

And a question has anyone tried out the speedsound stuff ? He seems the most active poster in this section. But why does he post a new thread for every offer he has instead ONE ? Would it also not be promo? He does not give much tipps at all or wants to discuss it seems.

It's the same question I ask myself when I look in my mail spam folder. Are these viagra pills worth 30 bucks? I don't know, only way to know for sure is to take the plunge.

Or if we used the ultimate guinea pig. Enter NHJO, if it would improve his sound, I bet it would improve anyones production. It would perhaps be like countering spam with spam, like adding a spammers email to a spam mailing list. Some deep meta type shit. :D

so do you think nhjo could produce 60 000 instead of 6 000 tracks in one month with samples from speedsound?

Maybe, I wouldn't rule it out atleast. :D It's perhaps a door best kept closed.
