How much is your discogs.com collection worth?

Minimum: €16,475.96

Median: €27,581.81

Maximum: €46,376.49

No way in hell I get 46K euros for my collection though. If I'd ever sell my entire collection in one go (which will never happen!) it probably would go only as high as maybe 5-6K euros.

I sold my entire record collection about 5 years ago at about the time it became feasible to store a large music collection on a couple of hard disks... I don't hoard plastic

Good for you! I'm thinking about it once in a while - not necessarily selling what I have, just switch to buying digital only - but it's so hard for me to cut the ties. Which is stupid, because nowadays I very rarely even unwrap the CDs since I get the files along with the purchase in most cases. What bothers me with digital is fragmentation, i.e. the fact that there's no single place where I can purchase everything, maintain my collection, stream it, download and re-download if something was to happen with my hard drive, etc. Google Play probably come the closest - there's lots of goa/psy, especially old-school - and it gives an option of subscribing (a'la Spotify) rather than purchasing every single thing and the prices of single album are usually 1/2 or less of physical release, which is rarely the case in other places:

I only wonder if artists / labels get a cut from that? It's Google, so I'd expect they do, but would be awesome to have someone like Joske/Mars weigh in on this.

yea , far as i know joske has massive CD collection hes old skool DJ and thats fucking cool he plays with actually original fucking copies! As for Fabien i know he sold some music even jean michel jarre... depends of whats going in your life i know he has his wife , child and stuff which is very nice so maybe he felt he had to let go of certain things... same here you know , you become a parent and its choices in life but that doesnt mean you have to completely let go off your identity in a way if you get me. That's all i can say about them at least far as i know them they are good people.

I sold my entire record collection about 5 years ago at about the time it became feasible to store a large music collection on a couple of hard disks... I don't hoard plastic

yea i agree , two days ago ive been spring cleaning the place and getting rid of unused shit i dont wanna become a fucking horder, seen programs about that and unfortunatly my father in law has that problem but im not gonna go talk deeper in that... i know sometimes its hard to let go of certain memories n shit.. but its not easy to deal with its psychological... and have to be strong and ya gotta make choices , there are many factors , in my father in law case he lost his wife (my mother in law died of cancer god bless her soul) years ago and maybe he tended to try and keep himself happy n shit or trying to replace i dont know i dont want to analyse peoples minds because im not right person im a musician not a psychiatrist and best is psychiatrist people to help... that is if they want to be helped. from what i know from him he's an hard old fucker like. in my case im really happy to finally get the help i needed and thank many people here for telling me off which i never believed i needed it but fuck it anyways you know . i wanna keep my mind in a good place and the more positive the better . as i said i had enough of the 'real world' bullshit fuck all that

as for plastic im thankful for digital in this case i got enough cds as it is , i keep those that im really into it and still might give them a spin altho im a music goa producer aswel. but also got tons of stuff on pc which saves a lot of room and space which im glad , thats a good side of digital and i think thats whats going on nowadays and thats why i dont bother releasing cds or anything.. sure i have cassette player and recorder , bought cassettes from ebay friends for nice price which most people are chancers selling one cassete for 25 pounds its like fuck offfff matee seriously... i know its vintage but fuck!

I intend to use it in my studio music aswel but thats because im affectionated to the analogue sound but thats only for me was choice i made and i love it. :)

to Antic : google play seems nice altho i have no idea how to work on it except how to download from google drive lol but its not a bad idea ... bandcamp always wins im very familiar with it and it hasnt changed much at all which i appreciate a lot . you familirize yourself with something you know thats really good ... the fuckups are when they chang everything , layouts etc and you are like i wanna do this and it was there da fuck is it now? that sort of shit pisses me off bro if you get me. but sure i like the clean look of that google stuff . its better than itunes and all that middleman shyte you know.. i have no idea about the prices on google play store but i like playstore , has nice free softwares n stuff... :) maybe with some help i would infiltrate my music in it somehow but ... but in other hand its ok for me as it bandcamp , people downloading , sharing like old times thats me just ... its all good im happy as it is . im not worried or trying to go 'big' or anything i just want people to love the music as much i want to love it too myself and thats pretty much it for now. :)

For Google Play, once you buy something you just click "Download album" or something like that from the menu and that's it. I'm not sure if it's available if you subscribe to the service?

Yeah, I love Bandcamp as well but a) it has much narrower selection of music, B) I'm always afraid with services like that they'll vanish someday along with my collection (which won't likely happen to Google :))

i always and strongly suggest dont rely on streaming mate , make sure you download yourself a copy and WAV specially! <3 best advice i can give you thats what i do but i aint deleting anything at all and bandcamp im happy they are doing well

thanks for your advice bro much appreciated :)

edit : forgot to say the streaming in bandcamp is shitty mp3 128kpbs so... man thats pretty much it , i like full quality , mp3 is just good for a quick preview n shit ... i like high quality always specially in what concerns my music :) download Alac , Flac if you dont want that big but you always lose some quality in those cases but its pretty close . I go Wave which is the best i like my records in Studio quality even for a future listening and stuff and one day if i want to release again i got the wav files .. keep it safe in a way you know . lots of backups i make , many lessons i learn in past losing files n stuff... sure its a bit of a mess takes me time to dig them shits again but man its worth it and i love to keep it clean . :)

'For Google Play, once you buy something you just click "Download album" '

its same in bandcamp bro :) and you get to select what format you want to download. i think once you buy it you can go back and select another format . they should do that or maybe they actually do it already not sure maybe ill ask them or spend some time reading the help section . :)

Sure, d/l + backup is obviously the way to go, but having an option to stream is useful as well, e.g. if I'm at holidays or at my parents without my music, then I can always log-in to Google Play / Bandcamp and still listen to it, even if quality is not the best. Or at the lunch break at work - I can use my company phone (on which I'm not allowed to store any files) to stream some music while eating :)

It's good to have options, that's all.

We were thinking about adding complete Neogoa discography on Bandcamp just for the sake of people who actually got some of our releases in their collection (of course, it should be added as 'name your price' option), but in long term it will limit our download traffic allowed on Bandcamp per month. However, Bandcamp is becoming a number one spot for Goa trance music no matter is it physical or digital since all relevant labels tend to have their account (or publish via their root distribution company) there.

True. On the other hand Google Play does the pricing of digital releases better, while Bandcam usually has the same for digital & physical, e.g. Morpic Resonance's "City of Moons":

Google Play - 4.30EUR https://play.google.com/store/music/album/Morphic_Resonance_The_City_Of_Moons?id=Bvmygj5jtioe2z3pwcaworozfw4

Bandcamp - 11EUR https://suntriprecords.bandcamp.com/album/morphic-resonance-the-city-of-moons

Since I'm not paying for printing of CD, artwork, jewel case, shipping from factory, etc. I think Google's pricing is much fairer, no? Most likely it also factors in that for Google hosting it is much cheaper than for Bandcamp or Spotify, while their global reach - theoretically - ensures more sales and ultimately profit even if individual margins are narrower. Obviously it's different from the artists / label point of view, but if I'm to switch to digital I need some incentive and pricing is crucial.

EDIT: just looking at those Google prices I might actually re-buy a lot of albums I already own and support the artists once more :)

As you said it depends from label to label (or artist to artist), Bandcamp has it's fixed fee for digital releases (15%) but it can be reduced to 10% after you pass certain number of sales. I'm not much familiar with Google Play options but what makes Bandcamp great tool (at least for me personally) is the flexibility and additional features that offers secret downloads, unlimited streaming, downloadable extra content and variety of audio formats without re-uploading. When it comes to pricing in general I agree that prices are too high, don't get me wrong, you buy someone's work either way, but seeing 2-track digital releases being sold for 6 USD or so is really something that I personally don't support, no matter the fact that you get music in best possible quality.

I believe that for the free music / netlabel scene, the 'name your price' option is the way to go, your supporters can get high quality music for free but they also have option to support the artist or label in direct way. Even we published some of our releases under that option, many people kindly donated and it actually helps a lot in the end to cover at least some part of production expenses. So in the end, Bandcamp seems like something that will help and shape Goa trance music in a good way, the other thing is when someone is abusing it with ultra high prices.

Ok, fair points indeed. However, would you consider - in addition to Bandcamp - putting your label's music on Google Play? There's also an option for "free download" (e.g. Erothyme's "Muses & Graces": https://play.google.com/store/music/album/Erothyme_Muses_Grace?id=Bft74pauuud4bc456cwgia66nmi) so I guess it's pretty flexible. I mean does it cost you (the label) anything to do that?

Don't lock yourself into Google Play man, take care of your collection manually and just buy some backup hard disks so the risk of losing it all is minimal. Google Play, Apple or whatever seem to offer convenience, but they will only let you down for one reason or another. Take care of your digital stuff yourself, it will pay off.

Yes, that's obvious - I mention streaming as an additional factor to consider for the reasons I mentioned earlier.

yea man you should get yourself a terabyte Hard drive and get all your music safe mate believe me from experience a lot of shit i have is gone now... if it wouldnt be for that i would be fucked / screwed ... better safe than sorry as they say bro! but anyways its your call not mine man. streaming is useful as you said u travel no need to carry anything ... look why not putting the mp3 or something in your phone for example? thats what i used to do on holidays and even bring couple cds with discman n shit like i did back in days loooll and thats pretty much it .

plus accesing internet through your phone network costs a lot depending on what packaging you own... i dont even bother i got wi-fi.

well think about it anyways , its only a suggestion not trying to influence you or anything.

be cool man/sir :)
