nice. especially the first track from each post. so is non-softened techno finally becoming more popular again?

i guess you'll know it from my own techno thread further down, but i think it fits here nicely:

edit: thanks for posting this thread. those AnD guys make some seriously good techno.

Glad you guys liked this genre too. Production qualities in these tracks are extremely high.

For a few years now this sort of techno has been popular in Berlin and the more exclusive club nights in London.

Also I think that Ofer Dikovsky anticipated this genre with tracks like Timelessness and Alien Pump. But he never gets the credit - I've never seen anybody draw the link between his brand of dark industrial goa and modern techno.

Yes that track is 20 years old now (!!).

Now, this has been one of my favorites for years, but I never knew he drew that link!

Yes, good point, the tech-psy sound also loosely comes under this banner. I love all these interrelated genres. I think my favourite tech-psy track is X-Dream's Peter's Hoover from the Irritant album. That Spirallianz track is also nice. It's been ages since I listened to The Delta, so thanks for reminding me to relisten to their discography.

While browsing some seller's offer on Discogs I stumbled upon this:

https://www.discogs.com/Spies-Notinism/release/707097?ev=item-vc

Also, those two compilations should pretty much fit the industrial theme:

Transient Six: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Transient-Six-Theory-Of-Evolution/master/11432

Kiss The Future: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Kiss-The-Future/master/90163

i guess you find every kind of techno in berlin (and also london) ;)

over here in vienna we have just one club with regular events and there are about as many people as at the oldschool goa parties (something like 20-30)…

glad you like it. maybe you'll find more in this thread?

i like the raw warehouse atmosphere, but i'd prefer a straighter kickdrum and just a little less bitcrusher. i know i'm picky :D

What exactly do you mean by that?

when in the goa scene the theme techno comes up, you immediately hear: delta, spirallianz, etc. but this music was never played by techno djs or at techno parties. have you ever heard jeff mills(or any other renowned techno dj) played a track from the socalled "psy-tech" genre?

From what I've heard from Techno people, they find this stuff too "trancy", and there seems to be some kind of an aversion towards Psy or Trance among many in the Techno scene.

Until the early 00s there was a lot of Techno with higher BPM and trance/Psy synthies, also a lot of acid influences. A lot of techno DJs played faster trance infused stuff like Mauro Picotto did (like in this part: https://youtu.be/1DNKIaHSflI?t=412 )... it seems like everything seemed to get seperated more and more. Acid, Goa, Techno, Trance, they each tried to establish their own distinct subculture.

As for Techno, I wasn't really into it back then but did some research and the major change seems to have happened between '00 and '05, the BPM dropped and techno became what is today. I guess this development is why most Techno nowadays seems locked at around 130BPM and sticks to a minimal instrumentation with a swing/shuffle rythm.

Nowadays, there are some more melodic trance-borderline tracks, but not that easy to spot. I've found a few:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVmQVFwR1eU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARQIBUgbY3o

As for the faster and banging Industrial/Psy trance, I think that's even rarer today. I know there is still some Schranz or Hardtechno going on but often I've found that it's a)too fast and b)just the same loop for hours and hours with no actual structure or atmosphere.

For the harder tech/trance/industrial thing I recommend Audiowarp like I did in Padmapani's thread, but I have yet to find any newer tracks in that direction:

...and there is no genre called "psychedelic industrial techno". 80% of the tracks posted here are simply listed as techno (discogs, hardwax.com, rushhour, clone or any other record store) because techno is very psychedelic (of course without that formulary "düdeldüdel" melodies and stupid basslines) and techno is very industrial. that is the essence of techno. no need to open a new genre. if someone wants to classify sandwell district, function, rrose, etc, than most likely to the newer birmingham-techno.

Thanks a lot for the input Cybernetika.

@ulmehagen I'm fully aware that this isn't an official genre, but if you listen to the Orphx track and others I posted you'll find it is an apt description. You claim that the essence of techno is very psychedelic and industrial, which is simply false. Techno is a broad church. For instance, lots of techno is inspired by IDM or is very minimal, without psychedelic elements at all. The Birmingham sound is not a suitable description, since artists like Regis aren't focussing on being psychedelic but on being raw and banging. Most of the artists I listed have more to do with the Berlin scene than the Birmingham one.

the berlin sound, as you know it from the berghain, orginated from detroit techno, birmingham, downpitched old swedish loop techno, downpitched old schranz and some outstandig psychedelic-autechre-like-idm. the psychedelic focus from artist like regis, surgeon, etc, is on a completly different level than you know it from goa or psytrance. i do not think that they are exclusively focused on beeing raw and banging and i think that they would be quite offended by this insinuation. for example: surgeons rmx for rue east "birmingham" (https://www.discogs.com/Rue-East-Indoor-Culture-Remixes/release/30467)

is that only raw & banging ? on a monday morning at berghain ?

quote:" The Birmingham sound marked a turning point in the development of techno and its influence can be heard throughout the Berlin techno of the Berghain and Ostgut Ton.[6] It also formed the starting point for Regis and Female's later Sandwell District project.[7]"

That's why I mentioned Regis, not Surgeon. I'm a big fan of Regis's early work and as I recall even he said in interviews that he was putting everything through an amplifier and aiming for the most uncompromising sound possible. Sure in his later work particularly with Sandwell District there is a more psychedelic air but it's still far from the psychedelic synths of artists like Orphx and Rrose.

Exactly, the Birmingham sound influenced the Berlin sound, but in other respects they are quite different. That is why I chose this broad title for the thread. If I called it simply "Birmingham Techno" or "Berghain Techno" most of the tracks I posted wouldn't fit, whereas if I called it just "Techno" that would be far too broad and people would be posting Detroit stuff. I don't find debating genre boundaries particularly interesting or enlightening so why don't we go on recommending tracks?

In fact if I had to choose a different thread title it might be "Stroboscopic Artefacts", the label which is pushing this sound the most. Excellent releases all around.

i`m with you. the question for me was: what is berlin sound? for the younger ones is it the current berghain sound. older associate with it the sound of maurizio&basic channel together with the old tresor sound (which is also a blend of detroit&birmingham).

and you are right with this one:" I don't find debating genre boundaries particularly interesting or enlightening so why don't we go on recommending tracks? "

a nice mixture of hard industrial and some deep-sea-diving like donato dozzy stuff...

cheers!

Great recommendation. I'm a big fan of that hypnotic Italian sound. Sabatini got a lot of play on the techno circuit a few years back with this:

Also, the Zooloft label is full of stellar releases.
