Review by DMG (Australia)

London-based label Free-Spirit Records (FSR) are a prolific bunch, releasing any number of compilations, solo artist albums and EPs each year. At the very core of which is their Free-Spirit series it being their first ever foist on a then unsuspecting world. How times have changed though with FSR now on the verge of celebrating its 10th anniversary during which time it has launched many a career, attracted talent from across the planet to its roster and brought into the wider consciousness all number of artists. The latest of the Free-Spirit Recordsseries is Volume 8, Dividualism. Each of its predecessors designated the responsibility of a different individual to compile and over the years featured producers from across the spectrum and across the sphere. This time it is Dillan M playing selector and those aware of him will have an expectation of what he brings to the fore, for those who don’t, expect no-nonsense, new-fashioned psychedelic.
Dividualism containing a varied line-up of contributors including tunes from FSR stalwarts - Journey, and Sonic Wave Control, some co-productions - Twelve Sessions and Woodstech, K.i.M and Manipulation, Hypnoise and Ying Yang Monks plus a few from those appearing in FSR colours for the very first time such as Breathead, Cylon and Space Vision. The common theme; the sensibilities that are constructed into each track. Think focused, with intent, stripped back, unreconstructed, unadulterated energy and you are getting the idea. Working on the primeval surges that happen at the subliminal layer which then get released as a re-interpretation of what is surging from within, often in an atmosphere of communal experience. Yes, this compilation is all about the dance-floor, be it sandy, dusty, leafy or wooden, the sounds are universal, appealing to all comers from all quarters. Have a listen, and get on it too.

Dillan M ( Free - Spirit records ) Bio

2000: South African born Dillan M began his DJ career after being exposed to the Psycadelic enchantments of Cape Town’s outdoors. His journey began in a friend’s room with the classic sounds made by vinyl’s and turntables and lead to playing a few house parties.

2001-2002: Whilst living in in Miami Dillan M started to take music more seriously after djing out there.

2003: Dillan M made the move to London and started doing house parties and playing around various clubs & squats.

2004: A breakthrough year for Dillan M when he began hosting a weekly Internet radio show with friend DJ Tabs on World Dance FM, called Tribal Tabs. The show averaged over 2000 listeners every week and included guest artists, DJs and album launches from various labels world wide and quickly became the number 1 show on the station with its unique blend of Progressive (DJ Tabs) and Psychedelic Trance (Dillan M).

2005 – 2007: Dillan M formed Psyops Productions with a few partners, hosted various underground events and had great success in a short time. In 2007 they hosted the Mirror Mask New Years Party which saw the much anticipated return of SHIFT to London and also brought along artists such as Hydraglyph, Twisted System, Hanibal Selekta (African Dope), Flooting Grooves and a host of other Guests.

2009: Dillan M joined world renowned Psy-Trance Label Free-Spirit Records and quickly become a highly sought after DJ. With that came a featured article in BPM Magazine in June 2009, which in turn resulted in a Free-Spirit Records tour to South Africa 2009-2010. After a 7.5 year absence plying his trade in Europe, Dillan M returned to South Africa with great success. Building on his already growing reputation for taking dance-floors on incredible soundscape journeys through his mixing techniques and master skills which shine behind the decks. Dillan M’s passion for his art shows in his stage performances which are always filled with high energy and his enticing track selections allows him to get crowds riled up to the point of EXPLODING, before bringing them back down only to swing them sideways and back around again and again!

2012: Dillan M joined forces with Cape Towns number 1 Underground Internet Radio Station – Mutha FM to create “THE PSY-EFFECT“. After just a few shows it is easy to see why Dillan M achieved success with his stint on radio @ WDFM in the UK. His banter and interview skills create a relaxed and easy environment for the listeners, and he always delivers a high standard of top quality music! The Thursday night show is increasing in popularity and already boasting prestigious international guests such as the legendary Absolum and Free-Spirit Records “head honcho” Journey aka Jay OM, not to mention the growing list of top South African DJ’s , Artists and Promoters alike…

And thats just the beginning!

With determination, passion, a good ear for music, and an incredible desire to succeed; put that into a studio and what do you get? O.C.D. (Octoclutch & Dillan M). Working with long time friend and producer Octoclutch, this duo has been carefully constructing their unique sound which is almost ready to be unleashed on to the dance-floors.

Dillan M is also currently working on various projects, collaborations and remixes as he looks to explore the nature of The Underground Psychedelic Sounds (keep a look out for upcoming releases in the very near future).

Dillan M has an impressive resume (having played across Europe, UK and South Africa) headlining club and festival events, including SE1, Jacks Club, Psyops Productions, Mirror Mask, NewFoundLand, Marburg Virus, Vortex, Mind Cultivation, Groovy Troopers, The Village, Visions Festival, PsynOpticz, Mungus Fungus and more. He has played alongside the most established artists and DJs in the Psy-Trance world today including Journey, Jay OM, Braincell, Omsphere, Solar Spectrum , M-Theory, Rinkadink, Broken Toy, Burn In Noise, Headroom, Shane Gobi, Earthling, Zen Mechanics, Commercial Hippies, Regan, Cosmosis, Prometheus, Shift, Phyx, Hydraglyph, Artifakt, Daksinamurti, Bliss, E-Jekt, Ital, The First Stone, Sinerider, Anti-Spin, Scragg (Rabdom L ), Rubix Qube, Lost & Found, Ace Ventura, Absolum, Deviant Species, Electrypnose, Aphid Moon, Scorb and the list goes on… Dillan M does not disappoint and u will not hear the same set twice! (promise)

His goal…?

Simple; Using the dance floor’s energy to paint sound upon the journey…
