Drone Ambient

Does anyone else here listen to Drone Ambient? I know that Kosmiktentacles does but haven't seen him post in a while.

A few of my favourite artists are:

Tim Hecker

Gas

Robert Henke

Stray Ghost

I find I can lose myself completely in some of these atmospheres, appreciating the sheer richness and depth. The only issue I find with the genre is that it is very easily copied, and therefore difficult to discern the derivative from the masterful, sometimes i'm not sure whether to apply myself to a release, or sometimes if i'm looking too hard in a release that is simply not worthy of the time!

Unfortunately Drone Ambient seems ot be a genre completely saturated with a huge amount of releases every month (yes, even more than fullon), so i'd appreciate anyone elses particular gems so that I can spend less time wading through the dross.

Wow, really ? even drone ambient has too many releases . . . I thought true drone ambient was kinda rare.

I like some of the artists you listed and I know what you are saying about a lot of attempts that miss it. I think it is a really hard genre to get right.

I went right from drone ambient to power noise but I rarely look for either.

I don't define Time Hecker as drone ambient either, just ambient. Drone ambient to me is a real drone sound, quite busy and complex but with no note starts or obvious stops. It is probably a specialized art using a field recorder and some found objects.

You should definitely try old Stars of the Lid albums. I'd say that Avec Laudenum is one of the best ambient albums ever made.

From new releases, I know that Saåad is also worth checking out.

PS. Welcome back Psynews! It's been a while.

I've begun working through Thomas Koner's material, it's extraordinary, very unique and rich in sound design and atmosphere. And I got the Stars of the Lid album "The Tired Sounds", and it is excellent. Is Avec Laudenum much better?

Also found an artist called Jefre Cantu Ledesma who's rapidly become one of my all time favourite artists. His album "Love is a Stream" is absolutely unbelievable, very textural and heavenly. I urge anyone interested in ambient and drone to check this out:

Otherworldy in its beauty.
