My electronic side project

Hello,

Before I begin, let me say that I sincerely hope this thread won't come across as some sort of unwanted self-promotion. Some of the forum rules gave me the impression that policies may be rather strict here as far as promotion is concerned. I am posting my material in hope of information and feedback only, one might even call it academic interest (see below). Early this year, I unearthed two of the electronic tracks from my teens, polished them a bit and recorded them properly because I felt they deserved it; it was a good way to bridge the ongoing hiatus of my regular musical project. I must confess that I don't know that much about electronic music - I've tried several genres over the last few years, listened to some stuff here and there and tried to grasp the connections and differences between the genres, but I feel that most of my knowledge is still quite sketchy and vague.

I figured that many people on this board should be sufficiently familiar with various electronic styles (much more than myself at any rate), so my request would be on the one hand for someone to tell me what exact style these two tracks are (if any), and on the other hand if they're any good at all by 'regular' standards. The genre tags I've chosen are very tentative, though the first track certainly is somewhere in the Trance spectrum, I guess... I've had but few reactions so far, but they were surprisingly positive despite the extreme limitations under which the stuff was produced, otherwise I wouldn't have dared to post it here. ;) But that feedback came from people who don't have much of a clue about electronic music themselves. Don't worry about negative comments - as I said, this material is really old and thus not that close to me. I'm just interested to hear what impression it makes on people who have the necessary background to assess its quality.

To cut a long story short, here's (finally) the link: The Real Redeemer (Yes, stupid name, I know.)

Oh, and by the way, I am a new user on this board - since I couldn't find a section for introductions as some other boards have it, I thought I'd just sneak in. :)

First track: pretty minimal style, but in a positive way! I like the variety of percusion and rhythms that come along through the track. The whole track also has an extremely oldschool feel to it, also in a good way! Lastly, the melodies are good, to the point, not superfluous or smtn...nice work!

Second: wow, this sounds pounding :) good job

Imo: very talented and you should definetely proceed the way you're producing now! Sorry, no tips from my side, as I perfectly enjoyed the tracks as they are :)

Wow, that's far more positive than I would have expected - thank you very much for taking the time to listen, and especially for the feedback! :) Any idea about the genre? The two tracks certainly don't belong to the same one at any rate, I guess... The djembe percussion in the middle section of "Ceremonial Trance" is 'real', btw (the only real instrument alongside the guitar in the faster track). The old-school feel you mentioned is quite easily explained by the fact that the original version of the track is more than a decade old (I can't date it precisely), and that the whole thing has been created with ridiculously basic equipment. But it's cool that you even see benefit in that!

i think the first one would have simply been called trance back then, sometimes moving into the direction of tribal trance for a bit.

the second one is more difficult, somewhere between hard trance and nitzhonot perhaps? (but the genre between these two would usually be uplifting trance, which it isn't either really...)

Thank you very much for your feedback on the genre question - and please excuse my tremendously delayed reaction! Haven't had much time for forum activities lately... Anyway, it's good to know that in your assessment, both tracks are apparently somewhere within the Trance spectrum. The Tribal tag is only due to the percussion, I assume?

no worries. yes, definitely in the trance spectrum. there's no doubt about that.

yes, usually anything with percussion like that seems to get the tribal tag. but it's not too prominent here, so i wouldn't classify it as such.

Thanks. :) I just like some percussion every now and then, it can add some extra depth to the sound. Over the years, the djembe has become something of a trademark for me, having appeared in various songs of pretty different style.

I've been meaning to record a new song for this project, again based on a very old, fragmentary idea, and it's not like I didn't know how to follow up on that basic idea, but somehow I couldn't find the motivation yet. I guess it'll eventually happen someday, though.

Here's a new track - the first one in ages and quite different from the ones before:

Comments are welcome, of course! Also, please spread the word if you enjoy it. My own resources in promoting it are quite limited.
