How can we make Psynews more active? Post your ideas/opinions.

Lately we (mods and admins) have been discussing about ways to make Psynews more active. The truth is that the last years Psynews is really slow. The biggest proof is the best of the year polls where the amount of people voting is decreasing each year. Even in the grand best of the noughties poll the participation was underwhelming.

The General forum is slow as well and the opening of the off topic didn't rejuvenate the site.

The truth is that forums in general don't seem to have their best time. Even Isratrance is slow compared to its golden days.

What is fascinating though is that according to the data Psynews still gets many new members and has many stalkers-people who read, but not participate. Also according to the statictics the reviews section (which was always the strongest point of Psynews) is the number one visited subforum (God bless Trance2MoveU).

So what do you think we should make/change in Psynews? Is it a reversible situation? Is it a sign of our times that music forums are slowly dying? Why so many people stalk, but not write in the forum?

Post your ideas/opinions/complains.

The Belgian forum is still going strong... it had a light decrease of active members, but it still super active... So I don't think forums itself are dying... The question is, how to get more members again!? The best way imo = advertisement...

Again I don't see why suntrip can't promote psynews at their parties.

We can do that... but how? Flyers? Suntrip parties happen 3 times a year, and the people there are a hardcore goa public that knows psynews (almost all Belgians here go to the Suntrip parties...)

We need more people from allover the world, not just Belgians, as they are mostly on www.psychedelic.be

Also, one of the reasons why Fabien stopped, is because we got more and more critical voices of people who said psynews is "Suntrip forum" and well... it is not :)

What about an internal music contest on psynews, where people of the forum votes for the best pieces in order to make a free compilation like "psynews best music", so it can be distributed on a big platform like ektoplazm and promote the website.

It could also be a way to mix several genres on a single album. Not just psy, just goa, just dark, just whatever... Just best quality music :)

That's a good idea...which we've been talking about already!

IMO, you should have sections by languages: here in Brazil the vast majority of psy fans can't type English decently, and we don't have a good Brazilian forum (there was Baladaplanet.com.br, but the mods let it get virused to a point you could not post or read anything). So, after BP died, most went to Facebook. You could have sections in Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and French and whatever languages asked. They would not interact with the main forum because of language barrier, but if you want numbers, that could be a solution.

Well...unless we had moderators who were fluent in all those languages, I think it's unlikely. Besides, Psynews is an international forum. Like it or not, that has so far meant English language.

Besides, we're not really looking for numbers, we're looking for an active, lively forum. Psytrance is still an active music scene, we just want to know what people are interested in.

EKTOPLAZM!

i think with the exciting changes ahead, psynews advertising essential

love the idea about the compilation, maybe we could ask the producers on this site, old and new school, we have so many, to maybe contribute some material, maybe even unreleased!

and the ones who still around, not active, rennis!, kim!

get a suomi stomper going!

billy has been around, big ask but maybe someone could pull a few strings, and i am sure you suntrip boys could pull some awsome material out your hats!

maybe fed could help also with some unreleased stuff, if the artists are ok with it.

ie a live etnica or pleiadians track!

otherwise i think we are going a bit stale with some topics/or we been there done that

or

maybe we just getting old, well me maybe!

come on you younglings get your thinking caps on for the next psynews evolution!

I'm active here for more than 3 years, but I've been reading reviews back than in 2003 i think and that's the main reason why I visited this site, more reviews will attract more people I'm sure, but reviews should cover as much as possible psy-trance sub-genres. It's not an easy job and there isn't that much people who are willing to do reviews, but hopefully that will change in future.

Facebook is place where most people find informations and updates, use Psynews facebook page to post as much as possible content on daily basis, post news, forum updates, new reviews, party/releases announcements, etc. I gave permission to few moderators who are on my facebook friendlist, for all of you others who got facebook and you're mod here on forum, let me know so I can add you aswell.

Promotional material, such as flyers on parties might do the work, but something like quality V/A will be a best promotion of this website/forum and it's content, but that is a hard job, if you need my help in any aspect regarding the visuals, or contatcing artists and offcourse promoting it on social networks, let me know, I'm gonna be more than happy to help a bit.

i stalked here for 2 years before i became a member because i didn't have to join, and could look at reviews, and what everyone was talking about without having to participate.

has anyone thought about premium membership etc for longtime and active members, not creating a elite or anything, but some sort of incentive (besides being part of the awsomness we have here) for people to join.

i once helped a friend promote a home dance party by pasting a single design all over town, people saw it everywhere they went, then we slowly let out rumours of what it was , and just about the whole town came.something along those lines, through the facebook!

done right will go off

I've always thought of Psynews as one of the most specialist of the psytrance & Goa forums because of its focus on actual Goa trance and not full on, this is why I post here but it's also why it's less active; Goa is a really obscure style in terms of Trance at large let alone EDM.

Facebook is probably the way to go to attract more members, or possibly an online chat function that only members can use (that would be really cool anyway and strengthen the community).

Or have a larger Goa trance mix section, we get a few people to contribute, youtube the mixes, link to Psynews for more.. just an idea!

I´m one of those stalkers, i read a lot psynews but don´t participate much. Lack of time, my point of view is already written by another member, I´m not so much into goa trance but other styles of Psytrance that don´t get covered much here lately, lazyness...........

One of the things I really like from psynews are the interviews to artists, it would be cool if more updated interviews from new artists come. And not only musicians, but also deco artists, lighting artists, label managers, party organizers, thinkers, etc...... Some discussion later about the points made by the artists could develop a nice thread. Also maybe a Q&A with some of the artists would be amazing. So for example a little forum or thread with questions to Boom organizers, that they can answer later on. Moderated to avoid problems of course.........

As mentioned earlier one of the great values of Psynews is the review section. Maybe it could be boosted with a poll system, so people can also vote. Or maybe with a short questioning system, like evaluating musicality, quality of production, energy, innovation, etc........... With a poll system would also "The best of year 20.." be already shorted out.

Also the news forum is very slow, only the labels, producers or party promoters come to announce themself, and only a few of them do. It would be great to have a feed system with new realeases, party announcements, clothing and art news, etc...... That could be commented afterwards.

Last but not least, a contact forum could make psynews also a bit more lively. Producers looking for colaborations, or for someone else in their city to make music with, people in need of a lift to a festival, a place to announce that you found someone wallet or sunglasses at a festival, where to find people to help to put a party in some non trancy area, etc.......

Maybe, some of the ideas are a bit stupid, or something you already thought and don´t see relevant. They are things I liked to see here and that would make me participate more, so I just take the opportunity this thread gives.......

I was thinking about doing few email-to-email interviews with newschool artists that I'm familiar with, offcourse, with professional questions and some fun questions aswell, if I catch some extra time maybe I'll try to do something in that vain.

Psynews isn't very active for two reasons"

1. The internet in general is becoming more sectioned off by companies and organizations like Facebook who keep their users from searching for new sites.

This trend is not new and has been reported in tech-focused magazines before, but the result to old-school sites like Psynews is that fewer and fewer new visitors will spend time on the forum.

2. Psytrance is no longer the 'it' genre. It has been replaced by dubstep or clubby crap passing off as electronic. This is more true in the US then in Europe, but I think that it is worldwide generally.

You could advertise on Facebook, I don't know if it would work though.

I've seen comments like this a lot in the time I've been here. Psynews definitely isn't dedicated to goa trance over other styles, the only reason it's talked about more here is because the users do so. Psynews can't be more diverse if fans of more diverse styles don't speak up.
