Kick related question

Do you have any example ? If you talk about any regular psy kick, it's just the shape of the wave :)

any regular psy kick..... and please enlighten me on why the shape of the wave matters and so on.

If you want a really clicky kick, use a large amount of pitch modulation with a fast decay. This means it starts out at a high frequency (where the click comes from) and quickly gets down to the bassy part of the kick, without the noticeable downward pitch bend of certain old goa kicks.

You can try this really cool VST : http://www.ismism.de/getbi_e.htm (it's a shareware, but maybe you'll have to find a keygen because the official pay website is down !)

You got this small tutorial made by Infected Mush I think too : http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NLCMQUroKI (He's using soundforge, but you can understand what shape the kick has to get !)

thank you good sir.

I also use Bazzism, well worth the price.

2KHz (chesty part) and 5KHz (click) are good general areas to boost a tiny bit (broad Q) to make the transient come through the mix a bit better and to give some extra sharpness to the kickdrum.

Have a look at waldorf attack manual, it explains quite well how to mimic a 909 kick, snare, etc..... From there you can create your own.....

thanks i'll read over it to see if i've missed anything.

edit: this thing is great. A lot more precise than I expected thanks!

bazzism + use eq and a multiband compressor to get that click sounding louder. Really depends what kind of sound you want to achieve. Also layering, if you find a right sample with a click and cutoff all the lows from it and layer on top of your bass kick you should get nice effects too. For that you need to have a sample library on a disk to find matching one or carefully change pitch of your samples, and you have to make those two kicks not to interfere too much with each other.

Some people put a hi hat hit on every beat to coincide with the kickdrum. I personally don't like the sound of this when the same hat sound is used elsewhere as well (ruins the groove for me), neither do I like it when all the high and low mids of the hat are still present (ruins the body of the kick for me).

Another idea to get a nice kick - you send the output of your kick synth to three tracks in your DAW and then EQ each so that one track only has low freq, the second only mids and the third only hi freqs. Then you can adjust the levels, EQ for each part separately, add a bit of distortion just to one of the tracks and other stuff. Then you just can sample it and use it.
