Talent or ability isn't something you can teach. You either have it or you don't.

No Talent

Dude, empty net, all you had to do is....sigh.

Sure you can work hard, practice , or study to get better at a chosen field, but what separates the remarkable from the great is talent. Elad Afgin is one of those individuals. He has released free stuff over the net for years and has been one of the key figures in the resurgence of new school goa trance. Astral Experience on Suntrip in 2009 was a terrific goa trance joint with truckloads of sunshine and light. Not wanting to rest on his laurels, he released (for FREE) his Dream Master EP which began to stretch the boundaries of goa. With this his latest release (also for free) he further combines the elements of goa trance with uplifting European euphoric trance.

First let's discuss the cover. If you wanted to be a part of the European trance community, you went about it the right way. Sorry Afgin, but the cover is cheese in all of it's European "No, really that's what the music does to me" glory. The track titles don't help either. Pure cane sugar. The only thing I found gayer is this

Posted Image

Wow, that's gay. What? There's a volume 2?

Posted Image

Ho-lee-crap. Get the f*ck outta here, a third one?

Posted Image

Did the label just ambush a gay porn shoot and say,"F*ck yeah, this will work. Kick ass!" And before I get email from anyone saying I'm intolerant, I don't care if you're gay. You're gay? Good for you. It's not for me. But if you are gay, you have to admit...those covers are really gay.

And a cigarette? Really? C'mon man, I know a lot of Europeans smoke, but that sh*t is bad for you. Unnecessary.

Now that the superficial crap is out of the way, let's discuss the music. There will be some that hate this due to the fact that it isn't true goa. Sure, there are some goa touches throughout, but it isn't meant to be a goa album. He did that already. What I imagine he is trying to do is expand the limits of the genre. Usually when you make the move to the more commercial, teenage girl, glowstick type of chance it has more cheese than Green Bay, Wisconsin. But this is Afgin we're talkin' about. Homie puts layers in his track as well as surprises that keep it fresh. Yes it is emotional music (so maybe the music really did make him feel like that on the cover) but he's f*cking good at it. Melodic as hell, but he doesn't go for the easy melody, he creates feelings in others that they themselves find hard to understand.. His breaks are delicious and euphoric with great detail. When was the last time you heard trance music with piano in it and it wasn't douchetastic? Well, he pulls it off. And what the hell is wrong with music making you smile and feel good? Nothing that's what.

So if you're looking for a great goa album, go check out Astral Experience. It ain't here. The only thing here is a good time. Damn good time.

AFGIN -- i want you to know that i really really disagree with you about the psy vs. the eurotrance scenes... there are easily as many unscrupulous, in-it-for-the-money, alcoholic douchebags in the eurotrance scene as there are "permafried" acidheads and potheads who make everyone's life hard in the psytrance scene. my experience is that there will be different bad characters, and different good ones, in each scene. what goa and psy bring is the UNDERGROUND vibe that even eurotrance had in the early 90s, when i lived in holland, but that can pretty much only be found in the druggier, more overtly countercultural scenes now.

point 2: i also really want you to know that i sympathize with your situation. there was a crew around here (not really a crew, you know, but a profit machine) doing these fucking gigantic McRaveswith above and beyond, mau5 etc. and they really screwed everyone over... and it's a real letdown to have parties turn into that...

point 3: you are a fucking class act, as has been virtually unanimously assented to, in the thread above, and i LOVE your unique sound... i remember when rave anthems were complicated and structurally varied... ayla - ayla used to be underground as fuck back in the late 90s before tiësto got his anti-scene paws all over it, killed it for a year, then discarded it. THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing underground sounds back into melodic anthems! you are almost the only artist (along with other suntrip artists) who does so... and you do it in a way that appeals to people who don't know about the "underground" or "counterculture" of psy, which can be admittedly a bit self-conscious... and not just appealing to those of us who were listening to doof and hallucinogen fifteen years ago...

much love!

Just to clear out some misconceptions about the 'regular' trance scene. I've been to hundreds of huge parties such as Trance Energy, AvB concerts, Tiesto concerts, Innercity, etc... and I can guarantee that more than 80% of the clubbers do drugs.

But I don't care, the vibe is always super duper. :)

Just to say that it's everywhere, it doesn't stick to 1 genre. Trust me.

Now I should almost forget to comment on this EP by Afgin. :-)

Well, the least I can say is that I'm surprised. Shifting from Goa to Eurotrance isn't exactly a shift one takes overnight. So I'm sure Afgin really thought about this and decided that he feels better making eurotrance.

At first listen, the music sounds as it should sound: catchy, happy, uplifting, but with enough variation to make it interesting. That's what sets this EP far aside most trance releases nowadays. I'm also glad Afgin does not (yet) take part in the loudness war, that seems to dominate the current trance scene. I do, however, wonder if this EP will appeal to a larger audience as it sounds more basic (which is better in my opinion) than the others out there.

For me personally, I enjoy these tracks. Especially while playing my favorite racing game. :-) They bring me into a happy mood and that's always a nice thing. :)

I think it just needs to be said to any artist that it's amazing what they can do.. I love this music and it's surrounding genres but personally I can't make a song to save my ass, so I have to tip my hat to those who do. People judge too harshly sometimes, and personally many of them can't make a song either, but sure can sit there and say this sucks that sucks.. whatever.

and those scary album covers with the shirtless dude ugh.. reminds me of many crappy trance compilations with the big boobed girl on the cover.. Many of us have been suckered into getting those thinking wow the music must be great!! nope. :( Cigarette, no cigarette, person or graphics whatever.. if the music works who cares? If one wanted art they can go look at art. However I do believe in genres like death metal, one or two members smiling (without blood dripping from the smile at least) means this album is weak hahahaha!

I'm giving this album a listen to right now, t.r.a.n.c.e. has a very nice flow to it. I'll have to give the rest of it a listen to later.. it's bedtime for me.

Guess I never updated this.. but after listening to this album (thanks to Ektoplazm) it is now added to my winamp queue.

currently listening to Warm Breeze.. adequately named! I'm new to the whole experience of raves, didn't know how it worked to have intro style music, then progressively crazy, ending with something still trippy yet soothing at the same time for a cooldown. Hell I just figured people listened to crazy music for 4-6 hours and went home to do whatever. :P Anyway how it ends with piano.. I can just envision a mass of zombies still wanting to enjoy the music but worn out from hours of energy spent, ready to recharge and do it all over again tomorrow or next week whatever. Every song has a warm breeze to it, and although I really do go for a much crazier chaotic sound I like how this all rolls. I'll be listening to this album for a while.

If you guys want to continue the discussion about smoking or the trance scene, make a thread in the appropriate section(s). This one is meant for reviewing the music. We've decided to remove offtopic posts since you guys didn't stop after the warning.

after all this time, I still completely enjoy listening to this album. and the first track T.R.A.N.C.E. has a melody that just keeps playing in my head for hours after I hear it.
