Kick Bong is Franck Jousselin and this is his 2nd full length album. He is a downtempo artist from France that has appeared on numerous compilations. He mixes real instruments with electronica to create very thought porvoking melodies. The label is Greek Cosmicleaf Records who recently released the outstanding Planet Discovery from Easily Embarrassed. The cover is of some tree branches with red leaves against the backdrop of the sky. So let me get into an Autumn frame of mind.

There is a theme that is seen throughout the disc. Dreamy pads and a deep bass sound join a trip-hop beat on "2 Seasons." The guitar provides a nice melody as soft synths mingle with whispers. The percussion allows for a nice interlude and then more synths flesh out the track. Very pensive and a great way to open an album. The guitar takes center stage once again on "Flower Power" and churns over a breakbeat while synths pan left and right. The flute is mournful and is a nice touch. French whispers tickle the ear as the percussive touches are never far behind. Beautiful. Franck does a great job with this effort. They synths are very delicate providing melody and the pads are just super thick. Where he shines of course is the combination of synths and real live instruments. Guitars in several tracks really give them an added pop allowing the flow to be maintained and the percussion gives the tracks a tribal feel. The dreamy quality of this album cannot be missed. This is a journey of self-discovery with lots of genres being represented here. Downtempo, trip-hop, breakbeat...all done well. Vocals are here, but for the most part they enhance rather than distract. This music is very full, making sure that there is no empty space for the ear to wander. Highly recommended.
