Dark Psytrance Canon

I thought it would be a good idea to have a list here on psynews of the albums we consider to be the must have or "best" darkpsy albums.

When making your list, feel free to include EP's, Full length, and V/A's. And let's use some basic categories -

Horror/Psycore

Forest/Tribal

Twilight (dark full-on)

[feel free to add a category if I've missed one you think should play in]

Let's explore this flavorful little side world of psy and see what's out there.

Remember - this should be the best of the best (in your opinion of course) - not just stuff you've enjoyed, but rather stuff that would make a Darkpsy Canon.

[i'll post a little list of my own, but I don't want to influence opening posts - so I'll leave that for a little later after we've accumulated a bit of a list]

Have fun with this, and keep the posts coming.

Cheers and PsyON

Dunno how to categorise these, so I'll just go ahead and toss them out there:

Kindzadza - Waves from Outer Space

Kindzadza - Waves from Inner Space

Dark Nebula - The 8th Sphere

The Nommos - Primal Meltdown

Overdream - Wonderwise

And I'm tempted to also say Kraft - The Mysteries of the Sacred Universe, except that nobody other than me seems to think it's all that good.

e: Apparently some people do after all. That's nice to know.

Psycore

Alien Mental - Mind Hack - doesn't seem to be mentioned a lot, but I think its really twisted.

Twilight

Ocelot - Vector Selector

Principles of Flight - Chaos Opera - still a new album, lets see how it holds up but imo its good.

The rest has already been mentioned above.

experimental:

Malicious / A Feast Of Death EP, Wonders Fairytales EP

M.M.C / Adrenochrome 100%, Alice In Space, Worlds ID

Quite a lot of darkpsy suffers from having a linear arrangement and lack of subtlety and substance. These two (maybe Furious included) are the most out there, fun, attention to detail-type of darkpsy producers I've encountered.

And I Dunno, for some reason I don't think The Nommos-Primal meltdown sounds much like Derango-Tumult. Primal meltdown is pretty minimal.

It's forest for sure. Different style of course, but still forest (for me at least :) )

Well thanks to this thread I am being introduced to all sorts of classics I had not been able to hear before.

Kindzazda - Waves From Outer Space

Xenomorph - Cassandra's Nightmare

Baphomet Engine vs Datakult - Psytrance Is Dead!

all brilliant. Thanks for the education.

And put me down for another +1 for Kraft.

Also, I simply love Wi']['ch - The Hypersub. Really can't wait for a proper full length of this stuff.

I'd like to throw in my picks of

Ajja - Psychogenica

Abomination - Enemy Within

Menog - Emotions

Ocelot - Aural Sects

Twisted System - Core

@Ormion - c'mon now, don't hold back - let's see that SA list.

Really interested to see your picks (and learn some new ones for meself)

Throw down my friend...

Ok, here is my best of the best from the SA style. And only the darker/twilight stuff.

Shift-Excession

Shift-Alternator

Artifakt-Artifakts II

Artifakt-The Magus

Twisted System-The Dealers

Twisted System-Core

Brethren-The Price Of Prophecy (Their first album Legend Of Cane is even better, but not that dark IMO)

Frozen Ghost-Edible Technique (I hesitated to put this in this darkpsy list since it has a weird humour, but it has a darker edge too)

Xatrik-Project A (not the best, but the darkest SA release ever, so it deserves to be here)

Pitch Hikers-Twilight Zone (you can add their second album Sting too)

V/A - Midnight Storm

V/A - Midnight Storm III

V/A - New Blood

V/A - Retrospective Vol.1

V/A - The Turning

All this talk about darkpsy and no one mentions Ka-Sol?

I'm not sure exactly what sub-genre he fits into but I think it's forest.

Ka-Sol's Fairytale and Ghost Story albums are great.

Since Darkpsy is too heavy for me, all of my votes go in the Twilight category:

V/A- Ministry of Chaos

V/A- Macao

V/A- Cryptology

V/A- Future Cuts

V/A- All the Midnight Storm Volumes

Sick Addiction- Demented Diary

Brethren- Legend of Cane

Check this out as it has staying power- Deliiriant- Chemistry

Frantic Noise- Nordland Orchestra

Gappeq- Speaker Seeker

Hiyarant- Collision

Orca- Fist of Fury

Technodrome- Earthquake

Tryambaka- Colour of Time

The Atari.s- Space Invaded

Xatrik- Inside Information

Zybex- Surreal Energy

And anything by Frozen Ghost, Phatmatix, Dirty Motion, Concept, Shift, Lost & Found, Twisted System, Killer Buds, Sidhartha, Tickets and Multistate

That ought to keep you busy.

I wouldn't know for sure. I mean, I'm kinda tired of putting music into boxes. Some of those boxes don't hold up well to begin with (i.e. spilling into other boxes).

Anywho, I'm not sure if Midnight's Shared Blossom was posted on here yet, but I thought I'd through that compilation in as well.
