What I was saying is that I've encountered many people who say that bands like them are pushing musical boundaries. I've also heard many people say this about U2. This I can't even understand from a pop/ rock listeners viewpoint. Not dissing or being prejudice (hell, I like me some Coldplay from time to time) but to say that they are pushing musical limits is a slap in the face to all artist who really try to bring something new to the table. The big clichè here is that it all boils down to taste. But in my opinion, some people only seek what they find safe and familiar in music. Some people just like a artist, say like U2, because it's social acceptable and their friends and family members listen to it. This kind of person wouldn't even consider the possibility of getting into a piece of abstract art, or demanding instrumental music. I agree with the poster who wrote that many people don't qualify music as art, but just want a fast- fun- sing- along experience when they listen to music. I imagine if we would take a trip into this persons perception of art we would be quite shocked, because it probably is no perception at all. We have not looked deeply into other styles and then we judge them based on what we know, which is usually the mainstream apadptation of said styles. For example I don't like rock, I find it boring and shallow but I bet you that there is a lot of great rock out there that is intelligent & artistic. I just have not heard it, all the rock I have heard has been mainstream (pop) rock. Also, think of people who don't listen to Psy, if they have heard of it they have probably only heard Skazi and then they will judge from that, that Psytrance is shit! Who could blame them? I tend not to know those people on a personal level though, so it doesn't bother me too much. I've been very intrigued/moved by music from a very young age, so I have always been striving to find new interesting stuff. A lot of people just aren't that into music (which is fine, whatever makes you happy) I think. That doesn't make their or my tastes "superior" or anything like that, just different. Like others have said, some people see music as art, some as fun, or a combination of the two. Who's to say which way of listening to music is the "best". Viewing it as art seems to work best FOR ME, but that doesn't mean it will work best FOR YOU. most of my friends listen to music when they are socializing, drinking and singing their asses off! and as buzzman said i'd get weird looks if i tell them that i just sit and listen to music. for them music is just a background noise (a pleasant one ofc) that would draw their attention for a moment, and what's better than vocals for a momentary attention I always used to sit/lay in my room and just listen to music. My parents/brother always gave me weird looks, and would even ask "are you feeling okay?". Lyrics in music can be very important, and especially in good hip-hop. The problem is the artists with meaningless lyrics and the chase of profit. And good hip-hop is nothing else then to say respect towards. there is a Huge difference between hip-hop, hip-pop and Rap(e). Expand your musical horizon; there is good music in all genres to be respected for what it brings to the table. Admittedly, I almost stopped completely to pay deep attention to the lyrics after being lured into the dunkadunk mosakk. Man, this stuff we love so much, it's like some sort of heavy drug, man Note: I still remember how dissepointed I was to read the lyrics of Deftones - White Pony, but the musical aspects replaced teh lyrics. But of course, how are the people praising Gwen for her innovative originality supposed to know that she stole the sound? They can't, and for them it IS original. About Coldplay, the singer is a super emotional person who LOVES what he does and has a childlike poetic heart. Nothing wrong about that I guess.. Roots, listen to Clawfinger, they ptactivly invented Nu-Metal alla Limp Bizkit and Limp Bizkit. Might be they both suck to you, but I have mucho respecto for Clawfinger. For me, the pride in loving psytrance is a little bit to big I think. I seriously want to torture these people by giving them LSD and putting on Michele Adamson's popsy for one whole night (been there done that lol). Some asshole who praises Dali to be the best psytrance act out there, needs to get out of their ignorant box. it just proves to me that they know duck about what psycedelica is and it makes me so angry I want to step on a butterfly or something. To take some magic potion and listen to Diary of a Dope Fiend by Marilyn Manson. Been there and done that too..
