Your favorite Suntrip Records releases

I'm posting this because I don't think its been done before. I remember a thread that said something along the lines of "Which Suntrip albums do you own?" But not this one. Suntrip is such a popular name here at psynews and combined with the fact that they've released so many albums that the majority of listeners seem to really like, well, which ones do you consider the best (or most favorite) to least best (or least favorite. From those you own. :)

All of them except Ra (and Dimension 5 re-release) are the now stereotypical \"newschool goa\", especially Filteria. (In other words it\'s try-hard and lacks creativity.)

The Ra album is verging on a combination of goa and ambient. It\'s not got a whole shitload of layers of random sounds in it, doesn\'t use the stereotypical goa sounds, etc.

I'm quite on the same wavelenght, althou Khetzal had some bright moments and there are a few better tracks on compilations. All Suntrip cds always receive high ratings by majority, so it kinda frustrates an old goa sock like me who belongs in the little minority thinking "pretty good but..."

However I'm positive the future releases are offering more. The samples of Chi-A.D. and Virtuart tracks from the next comp are promising to say the least.

So bring it on... B)

Same here, I don´t really like the Khetzal, Filteria and Goasia, they sound to me like neophite stuff. Khetzal has way too many sounds and layers in his tracks so there´s no real focus, everything is going on in his tracks but there´s no real atmosphere. Atmosphere doesn´t come from adding lots of layers in cubase or logic just because Khetzal or filteria have a quadcore at 3,6 GHz or a dualcore E8600 @ 5 GHz. For a good atmopshere there must be a balance and fine tuning of the important layers in the song like hallucinogen. There are lots of sounds in hallucinogen but they are al well tuneda and so on. Altough I don´t really like Khetzal and filteria, (a few tracks of Khetzal are ok though) I do like Astrancer, Ethereal, Lost Buddha, and some Afgin stuff. I aktually think they are beter than the bigger guys like Khetzal and Filteria because they have more powerful melodies and their tacks already sound more oldschool goaish not like the extremly cheesy fileria.

I never liked cheesy Ra and dimension 5.

Yes, To sirius was cheesy for me, but if you say the new Ra album is different I can try it. And the building ups were lame, litle built ups of the same melody during the whole track, the melodies themself were good but too little built ups. Dimension 5 is not cheesy but it´s homophone, there are often the same sounds and it sounds very simple.

No offence to Ra or the Ra fans, but Ra (and D5) ain't stereotypical Goa?

They are the perfect example of stereotypical Goa! And of course I'm not using the word stereotypical in a bad meaning.

From the other hand Filteria (and especially Sky Input) ain't that sterotypical. Even these random sounds you said he uses, are not something stereotypical in Goa, maybe In Psy, but not in Goa.

I'm trying really hard to remember a Goa track that has this sounds chaos behind the main synth. Maybe some Pleiadians tracks, but just that.

Plus Filteria is waaayyy too aggressive to be called stereotypical Goa.

Actually radi 9th has the same melodies in the whole track. That's the only thing I didn't like to this (very good) album. The same reason I never loved D5. Once you listened the first minute you have pretty much listened to the whole track.

This is not something bad of course, but I prefer that in ambient. In dance music I want twists 'n turns.

Can you point me in the direction of some goa tracks that are similar to Ra and D5?

That\'s why I called it try-hard. Making chaos behind the main synth isn\'t not as good as making intelligible music behind the main synth. To what extent Pleiadians actually did this is debatable IMO, but I think most of these newschool artists are just throwing in chaotic layers to obfuscate their crappy music. And it just comes out of the speakers as noise to me for the most part.

Relating this back to Ra & D5, there is never chaos in their music, it\'s always clearly defined and there\'s nothing just \"thrown in there\" for extra effect. That, and that their music is always really powerful and melodic (excluding some of D5\'s Second Phaze), seems to be the common divisor between Ra & D5 and their other subgroups.

AFAIC tracks are supposed to have the same melodies. That doesn\'t mean they\'re boring if they use them properly and build them up and down and vary them. I view it more as a sign of weakness when melodies change drastically within the track -- it\'s like the artist didn\'t know what to do after a couple minutes so he just decided to switch to a new melody to try and save his track from being boring!

No, it´s the other way round, an artist who uses the same melody in the whole track just can´t think of another melody and wants to finish the album quickly because he just has to make out one melody of his head and then varries it a bit. There is a Ra track I know very well, sign of life, which is pretty good but after a few listenings it gets boring if you have to lsiten the whole track, there shouldn´t be one melody for 7 minutes. Even old electric universe tracks like Galaxia, Astral Voyage, sunset skyline and so n altough very simple have more variations. Ra stuff could be way better with changing melodies. The same is with Dimension 5 but I don´t like Dimension 5 anyway.

In hallucinogen you can hear the same melody for the whole lengh of the track in Alpha centauri. Alpha centauri but the melodies are like question to answer. the answerlike melody kicks in for the first time at 1:54, the questionlike melody kicks in at 2:23 for the first time and then it´s a play between these melodies, but similar types of melody arrangments you can only hear in very few goa tracks probably only Posford tracks. Ra can´t do such things, he just adds a few more notes at the end of the track and that´s it. They are all euphoric however.

I think you are confusing things a little bit here radi. You like many different melodies in a track but not everyone does. Do you also think that a track with no melody is just made by someone is not good enough to make melodies? You must know that's not true don't you? I find unmelodious tracks more entrancing & hypnotic & although I do like melodies I prefer one melody worked well throughout a track than a load of melodies.

I could say that an artist that has to bring in more melodies just can't vary the one melody enough to keep it interesting. But then I would be thinking that my taste is what music it is all about, which I don't.
