It's artists never were affected by fame or money, they only cared about their music. And let's face it, the average person that's just entering the world of pc-based music production is really more interested in other forms of music like hip-hop, progressive, full-on etc, simply because its more 'popular', and, with all the instructions & instrument presets etc available on the web today, its real easy to make something in a matter of days. With the ammount of competition right now in the ambient domain, they wouldn't stand a chance even if they tried. Just my 2 cents.. Well, basically I agree, but lately the chillout department got more stereotypical as well with all those generic indian samples... It all depends what sells though, that's right. If these samples sell, then more stuff with that gets produced. That's why I actually dislike this kind of "big wave" stuff ... everything where the masses are either is already bad or is getting bad. The key is to find stuff that is good and that nobody listens to ... because then the motives of the producers are different aswell - not money but good music. Well finding stuff that is good is hard to keep for yourself. It seems 'natural' to share opinions on good music with other people . Unfortunately, the masses keep looking for 'new victims' among these genres. Just about any genre has gone or will go thru the 'commercialization' process, if the mass finds it 'hip'. Goa Trance was one of those genres which didn't last that long, that the big masses didn't attach to, which is kind of a good thing. See in the last few years we have these goa releases, mostly from Suntrip, and the music stays very close to the quality we've gotten so used to in the 90s. Perhaps one reason that most artists out there aren't interested into making goa, is that almost no record label is interested in publishing something like that, and the only alternatives are either Suntrip, who care about the music and won't release just anything labeled 'goa', or the artists could release their music for free. Because Goa has stayed almost untouched by commercialization, I consider it my personal favourite of all the music styles. One could wish that we could have several dozen releases a year, but I personally wouldn't want this genre to take risk by expanding to the big masses, I'd rather wait a few months for a quality release then see this genre sink to commercialization like psy-trance did.
