Why You Make Music

Recommended Posts

This thread is about why you make music.

I am curious about different answers on here, so please try to be as honest as possible.

I will start this off:

I have always been interested in art mabe because my mom was an artist or because I went to alot of museums as a child.

In school I took art and did well, but it took me longer to draw a good scene then others and I could see I wasn't as talented as some others.

I also wrote poetry, but no one I knew read poetry on their own time so I don't try to write.

When I was in college, I started going to raves and after one I would dream that I was still at the rave and the djs got better.

So I bought a workstation and tried to re-create the sound in my head from those dreams.

Basically that is it. I feel as though I am super-picky about what kind of music I listen to and therefore couldn't leave the sound to someone else.

I make music because my professional job sucks, but I have to do it for money. I will reduce my working days soon from 5 to 4 days a week, inorder to produce a music that has a -8% sales factor ;)

I make music because it is an infinite challange and possibilities, and it is the infinite joy.

Why are you asking this question , man? Do I ask you why you breath?

I can relate to this, my job is a bore and doesn't use any (well 1%) of my brainpower.

I can got totally engrosed into making music and forget everything else.

I think after a year of not having a studio put together I was remembering why I first started.

you don't need a studio..... All you need is a PC, a DAW, 2 LCD monitors, monitors, and software instruments and sampler OR a laptop and a head phone ...But you know that

I have 3 personal projects.

music, painting and VJ/video,film

at the start i never planned any succes with any of them, but to be honest, they all changed my life in a positive way.

I used my paintings at alot of parties. I think between 100 and 150 times in 3 or 4 years.

But in the end, i felt i reached a limit, every weekend completely exhausted, and alot of damaged, stolen paintings made me realise it wouldn't get any better anymore and it's best to fade away without stopping the other people in the team. to be honest, i never really liked the quality of my work, and i never will.

I did 1 year of filmschool, but it sucked. old gear, too much creative gibberish, etc etc i really hated it, one of the worst periods of my life, alot of doubts and completely disorientated, i was expecting alot and i got bullshit.

Around the same time i started making music, about 5 years ago.

Then i started doing courses, some public and some private. avid Xpress, video, cubase, protools, photography, light for film, audio engineering, etc etc

It costed a fortune, but was very specific and modern, for the last 4 years i only invested in those courses. I barely had any money left to do something else.

The people i met during those months brought me to the current situation. The first people i worked with are my last teachers. But without the music i wouldn't have accomplished anything probably.

at the moment i'm a sound technician, i'm working for one of the youngest but fastes growing TV producers of Belgium. My current boss started videohouse, one of europe's biggest sport&entertainment TV producers, but his brother now runs it after they broke cooperation. So 3 years ago he started Talent & vision. In the future, probably as big as videohouse but talent & vision is specialised in reality, documentaries and news.

The irony is that because i started using fruityloops years ago, all the professional people i met during the courses immediately send me in the direction of audio. I had a small background, but that ment i could ask specific questions and learn really fast. While my interest goes far beyond audio but i could specialise really fast, so i took my shot.

Yesterday i went live for 1 million people for the first time, and i remember thinking during the commercial break about the day i first opened fruityloops, and i probably wouldn't be standing there without it. well, if it wasn't fruityloops it would have been reason probably. :P

In my free time i make music and sound FX for a few semiprofi film/documentarymakers that also became good friends. One of them used to be a teacher of me and now pays me monthly to make all music for his work. This kind of replaced the party decoration but i'm planning to renew the party decoration also and build a decent VJ studio, my days are completely packed, i work approx. 9 to 14 hours a day, nights, weekends, very flexible. and i spend approx. 5 hours a day on my personal projects, even when i have a break i start my laptop and make some 3D animations or music.

After the summer i'm planning to start a 3D animation course and maybe in the future the BBC TV course.

It's kind of like the movie "Speed", where if the bus goes less than 50mph, it explodes. Well, if I don't make music often enough, I will explode. :D

Actually, it's just that music is my whole life. And a lot of feelings I have I can't articulate into words, but they're ripe for musical expression. If I didn't make music, I would just fester.

I think artists of any kind are in a constant hunt for an efficient means to express themselves, to purge the energies and the demons out of their systems and therefore feel the bliss that comes with constantly renewing and evolving oneself. I also feel that artistic expression is a form of communication with people when regular words and actions don't do much good. Lastly, I feel that art is a way to exert oneself upon people in a broadly sociological way when other means of exertion don't do much good. So all in all it's a way of being among people in a more or less functional way when, as an artist, one is largely incapable, for a variety of reasons, of being among people in a "normal" way. Music, for me, is a way of achieving these goals.

Because I was programmed to do so.

Nice one haha! :)

Anyways, I make music because of the passion for sounds. Every since I can remember music has been my one and only passion. My mother told me that I at very young age tought myself how to put on the stereo in the mornings and put on a record or casette to listen to in the morning. At the age of 7 my interest in djing apparently began, as I was making my own mix tapes with one record player and used the pause button to make the cassettes that I was recording seamless.

I still should have some of those tapes laying around in Sweden and Germany :)

But yeah, its the only thing that truly makes me feel like I am doing what I should be doing.

As a kid my dad bought me a air organ, on which I tought myself several oriental melodies, since I come froman oriental background. Then this organ was collecting dust till it disappered, I don't know anymore what happend to it.

As teenager (in 70s and 80s) I felt very much drawn to pink floyed and michael jackson's music, which prompt me to make my own selection cassettes. In late 80s I was introduced into prodigy and Jean Michel Jaar and hiphop, which I liked very much and again selection tapes. In early 90s I was exposed to Speed and MDMA in conjunction with house and Rave music, which catapulted me into the obssesion for electronic beats. The next music genre was acid goa which I was partying heavily on, of course accompanied by MDMA and speed. The early fast Goa sound wasn't realy apealing to my ears, till I discovered the early psytrance, on which I for the first time dared to take LSD. That was then my destiny written on stone, that I want to make this music, realizing my own ideas. And I still take LSD on very few parties I go on, but I am now very picky which party I go on not wasting my time. And I don't do drug while making music or playing out, since it gets me out of focus........my little story.... ;)

Because

- I can't find members for a band :D

- I love to listen to the same loop for more hours

- My dad loves it when I am sitting and working on a track and saying nothing :D
