Well, I'd still put this under chill out, since most of the tracks are in that mould. This one is written by one guy, and I've never heard of him before, but he delivers a great kinda chill album here in the Shpongle mould. Starts off with Cosmic Dust, an ambient track with a girl humming a little tune, coupled with great strings. Next up is Riding the Light which sounds more goa like, it has a beat, and some acid sounds, there's also a sitar in this one, which sounds pretty cool too. Next is another ambient like track, with chanting from Gyoto Monks and Tibetan Nuns (or so is says in the booklet). Reminds me of Shpongle and Celtic Cross. Then it's on to track 4, the longest one, this has a guitar and a flute in it, and it does have a beat, albeit very slowly. There's great work on melodies in this whole album and that's great. I also think track 4 is the best of this cd. On to trac! k 5: Sounds more Goa like, begins with weird vocoder effects and is one of the more faster tracks. This is again very melodic, with some female voice again en some nice strings. The occasional flute comes in. Overall, very melodic piece of work and very reminiscent of Shpongle. Track 6 starts with a great string, and really has a 'space' flavour around it. This one really suits the cover best. It also has a quite normal beat, and sounds more Goa like again. This one has a guitar in it again and sounds pretty good. Great work on the strings here! Track 7: Starts with a basswave and some great strings and a choir. Not bad, this. It also has a beat, and is about the fastest track on this album. Track 8 is just like track 1, only longer, and has a beat in it. Again, a real emphasis on melody here and this whole album has that melodic flavour. There's absolutely no darkness or minimalism to be found here. I can tell you this, if you like Shpongle or Celtic Cross, this album will su! it you right. I give this 8,5/10 because it's been a while since I heard an album like this. This album has a great 'spirit' so to speak, so if any of you feel like trancing on a lot of good sounds an melodies, give this one a try. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, and never got bored with it...!! Oh yeah, the name of the guy that did it all is: Titin Moraga, and I've never heard of him before, but at psyshop they said he was involved in theatre or something. Guest iNFiNiTi500 Posted June 20, 2001 Share Posted June 20, 2001 It may have a shponglism feel to it it is not yet up to those impossible weird standards, don't expect samba and opera on this one, although the rest is there. Yellow Magnetic Star is exactly the ambient that I like: well built-up songs with head and tail instead of eternal soundscapes, no Aphex Twin ugliness and moreover it is really melodic and even psychedelic with lots of back-to-the-India-roots sitars and stuff, a rarity these days. Thank God, no sign of the Minimal or Dark 'Highway to Hell' inhere. Probably the 2nd best ambient stuff released this year: 8.5/10. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Jeto Posted June 22, 2001 Share Posted June 22, 2001 This CD is something magical... The whole CD should be listened to in order. This stuff is just totally chilled out and relaxed. The production is quite complex and has some nice vocals on this CD. Also this CD is not competely ambient there is some sort of kickdrum in track 2 etc. But a very good output from this artists. I listened to it 4 times in a row when I got it home it was so yummy. It's as if Shpongle decided to get together and make 4 on the floor style morning trance. Do you like the sounds of crickets chirping in the forest and gurgling water noises all blended in with drifting acoustic melodies? I have had this for a month now, and just picked up the new Shpongle yesterday. This album is far smoother as a journey and not so overloaded with sounds and fx as Shpngl but it definitely holds a similar ethnic vein within its plastic cover. My highlight is track 5.... amazing vocals and nice groovy bass. Infact the bass lines are what keeps the energy up on much of this record. The production is fanstastic, with the melodies absolutely beautifull. This music is also very involving, a great change from most ambient-dub 'wallpaper' music releases these days. This music takes me to another world, especially tracks 2,3,8, but the whole CD is one amazing journey and each track is its own place. Lemmiwinks Posted April 6, 2003 Share Posted April 6, 2003 very underestimated artist IMO. This is one of the best psy albums I have!! It's some very mellow psy, which turns to chill-out at times, but incredibly trippy, with loads of oriental influences. All tracks are very well built, melodies have a nice progression. Best tracks: Buddha Raga (BTW don't let the title fool you, it isn't reggae at all, not even dub!!) and Journey To Hunabku which kinda reminds me of TIP - Mystical Experiences. 10/10 oh and also I don't think this should be compared to Shpongle, I find it's quite different from the Shpongle style, so don't think it's some sort of bad imitation or anything.
