Review:

I've never really been into the minimal, percussive and hypnotic style of Son

Kite. I have, however, always liked my chill-out/ambient served minimal with

emphasis on the space between the sounds. So when I learned that Ooze is

actually a synonym for Swedish producer and member of Son Kite Sebastian

Mullaert, I ordered this without hesitation (and pre-listening), expecting a

minimal chill-out/ambient experience. I was surprised though (positively of

course), as this doesn't seem to bear any of the traits of minimal psytrance

(or minimal ambient for all it matters) at all. This follows the same path as

Ciarian Walsh took on his last album "Blunt Instruments" with that

characteristic dreamy atmosphere. Even though I enjoyed "Blunt Instruments" a

lot, I enjoy this more as "Where The Fields Never Ends" is slower and somehow

a more ambient (and I am one for ambient) album. It's dominated by slow

breakbeats, dubby basslines, spaced out blips and blops and luscious chords

and melodies, and it still contain those indispensable psychedelic twists. The

recipe is fairly simple, but the music isn't! I'm having a really hard time

figuring out which track is my favourite. All tracks are very well put

together, but "What's Up" and "Trying Outwards" are just two pieces of

incredibly beautiful chill-out music. The album in its entirety is a blissful

journey, and it has immediately become one of my favourite chill-out albums of

all time. As Spirit Zone say on their website this album "...'oozes' into the

ear, calming neural receptors and soothing the soul." So true! Plurries

Whereas I, like mr. Buddhi, don't particularly enjoy the heavy minimal machinery of Son Kite,

I truly love this one as Ooze crafts dubby ambient with surprise surprise a lot of bright and

complex melodies. Think Dubtrees or early Orb but less dark. "Where The Fields Never End"

is the ultimate trip on a hot summer day. Under these circumstances it serves as

excellent food for thought when the brain needs a deserved time-out. One minor

complaint is that mr.Ooze may be a bit too faithful to the dub concept so

variation is not its strong point; this ain't no Shpongle rollercoaster. But

what is there is quite convincing, especially given the fact that

(psychedelic) Dub that truly manages to let the brain have a healthy spin is

damn hard to find nowadays. So 8.5/10. Well done, Seb.

Oh my god! This is truly excellent!

Track 6 is now my favourite Ambient Track ever!

Reminds me somewhat of Purple Penguin only much better!

Do yourself a favour and listen to Trying Outwards!

Ambient releases are always hard for me to review- I like to write about each

track, and ambient tracks usually have a lot in them. This CD especially was

hard to review, still as I listen to it more and more, I find more and more

layers to peel. I'll try to anyway, but it'll be an unfinished job- just the

tip of the iceberg. This is a real deep and mature creation, varied in sound,

texture and vibe, yet very much together- a real journey for the soul, with so

much emotions, and food for the mind and heart in it. All that, in crisp clear

sound and amazing production. It's what electronic music is all about.

Quintessence (which also opens the Chillosophy compilation), is a soft

ambientish track in a mysterious dubby atmosphere with a traveling story

inside. Very vivid and lively sound, painting a world around you in an

optimistic mellow atmosphere, which in a way characterizes the whole CD. The

mellowness continues the journey with What's Up, which also reveals more of

another side of this album- amazing twists of sounds, taking your mind to

other dimensions. Great vocal line which evokes in me a great longing for

something unknown, and a powerful kick that moves the body while the mind

drifts. From here we move on to Restricted Flow (T3), things get a bit more

energetic, though still in a spacey and relaxed atmosphere. There is something

pulling forward here, to some undefined destination. Get it Done (T4) that

follows has some of Son Kite's Aiwanna (downbeat mix) in it, twisty blooming

sounds, very organic and alive. Meeting with Strange Species (T5) is the

masterpiece here- a 13-minute journey in various soundscapes, grooves and

beats. A much happier and optimistic track with a crazy jazzy start, and then

things just go in all sorts of unexpected directions- words won't suffice-

just dive inside- and no expectations! Trying Outward is a deserving follower,

and the other real standout here- the optimistic mellowness returns, with some

of the sounds here penetrating deep down into the soul. This track is like an

exploding fractal with all the colors of the world inside- so visual! I wish

it would go on! Delicate Passage (T7), is constructed around powerful

percussion, circling you in a very hypnotic way. This is a real track to dive

into- it's like moving through liquid. Searching Inwards brings the journey to

it's end- more minimal and psychedelic, with thick and sparky atmosphere.

Close your eyes and follow the squeaks to another dimension till the deserved

ending. And then? Well? press play again.

Bottom line: The more I listen to this CD, the more buttons in presses

somewhere deep down inside my concouisness. This is a magnificent creation

driven by emotions, and dipped in sounds from other realities. One of the

'wholiest' releases of the year- a must have. Favorites: 1, 2(!), 5(!!),

6(!!), 7, 8.

Very good CD. Excellent quality, every track has strong points -- nothing

sucks in other words 8^) Very slow, relaxed, loosely constructed music with a

general direction. This could be considered "new age dub", as it incorporates

psychedelic sounds with the slow progression of dub... very nice to listen to.

As most of the tracks have been covered above, I'll just say that this album

will calm and soothe your senses, so pick it up and enjoy. 8.5/10

Ehm, I really don't like this CD. One of two chill-out dissapointments from

2001! (you don't want to know the other one, you'll just get mad!) I think

it's WAY to non-organic or something, everything sounds so

"made-with-synth":ish + all tracks sound almost the same to me, I've even

tried listening to this CD in the car when traveling. I still thought every

track sounded the same! The quality and production is impressive, but no

emotions in the music, no human touch!! 5/10!

some of it is deep and intricate, whisking you away into some ululating dub

paradise, then ....

the breaks are old and played out, some sound like mark Farina! really

distracting to the picky chill-out listener. its got some winners, would

slide into any downtempo psy-dub set, but i cant listen to the whole album

straight. almost hits the cheesy meter at times.

you should listen to this instead of enigma or deep forest. the dub-basslines

are solid, some noises are tight, the atmospherics and the overall feel of it

is good. add it to your collection if you spin dub-chillout.

6/10

this is very relaxing music ... just lighten some incense and enjoy ... the

sounds are clear , it are sounds of freedom ... a bit experimental in some

parts and that's what makes this album one of my favourite chill-out compact

discs . the quality is superb , as usual by Mulleart , with this touch of love

imo ... i don't realy have favourites , the tracks are a bit in the same style

which it make one trip through bits and bytes ....but if i must pick upà the

best tracks i would choose 1,2 and 5 ... i'm listening to it wright now and

i'm very happy and feel very comfortable :) highly recommended ... i give

this piece of art a psychedelic rating of 8/10

away quickly (well chosen arstist name ;) this music isn't for the foreground

but not for background either... i'd put it somewhere in between :) very nice

constructions and melodies... I particulary like trax 1,4,6... 87%

Still play this regularly! Nice polished sound great for home listening. I guess we can call this psydub. Anyway, any recommendation of similar sound would be greatly appreciated. Very rare to see the Swedish masters delivering something subpar, was certainly not the case here. Brilliant!
