Review:

Eternal Basement are Michael Kohlbecker (also known as Fünf D, Saafi Brothers,

Montauk P and many other projects) and Pascal Mollin. This is their first

album. They have also released an album on Blue Room called Magnet (2000).

This is a really good album. It starts off with a great chill out track that

still many djs play out. A deep, dubby, mystical track. Very psychedelic, and

one of my favourite chill out tracks of all times. It doesn`t sound old, and

it works very well early in the evening or at chill out rooms/tents... The

best track on this album. Track 2 starts with floating synth lines, before a

monotonous rhythm starts pumping. The floating sounds comes back under and

above serveral times. A good old trance track. This is also a deep, dark

track, as you usually get from this group. An other good evening track! Track

nr. 3 is not psy, but techno. If you are into techno from back then, you will

like this one. Monotonous rhythms together with pling plong sounds. This will

probably sound too old for many these days, but it`s fun to listen to some of

this old techno, when it reminds you of the good old techno days back in the

early 90´s. Track nr. 4 Nerv is the fastest track on this album (150 bpm). An

other techno track and not very psychedelic, but with a trancey feeling. Same

style as track nr. 3. Don`t you remember the good old underground techno

parties in basements and old factories when you hear this? Track nr. 5 is

more psychedelic, but with a techno feeling. A slow track you can chill to,

but it probably sounds too old for many these days. Track 6 continue the same

style. It reminds me a bit of Saafi Brothers, with slow progressive, trancey

development. The last track on this album is 14 minutes! A really beautifull

psyambient track. Something for all of you who like Saafi Brothers! Mystical

sounds and slow rhythms. Great chill, after these more techno oriented tracks.

This album is worth having for track 1 and 7, and definetly something for the

ones who like other releases from Michael Kohlbecker. So for you crazy record

collectors out there. Good luck hunting! 6/10

Woah!!! They did stuff like this back in 1995??? I got this album a month ago

and I'm stunned!!! It seems very very hard to find a track that is melodic AND

dark at the same time, usually it's either dark and minimal or full-on and

uplifting. But these guys manage to do this and do it quite well!! Ok, some

303s sound pretty old today (especially in A Flyby) but all the tracks, even

the techno-oriented ones have this cool slow progression producing sound

"landscapes", you can just close you eyes and "see" the music. VERY VERY few

artists manage to do this (especially these days...), and even less manage to

produce "drak" landscapes... So for that I give this a 9/10!!!

Globally, a good album back in 1995, especially the first tracks "woy" and "mind out" which sound deep & emotional at the same time. I give them a 10/10! :D

The other tracks are quite static and sound more electronic. IMO, they belong more to techno genre than to the trance.

i have always wondered why "taking place in you" werent on this album.

It's a good question indeed! It's strange, because "Taking place in you" has been released only 5 years after its first appareance on the "Magnet" album from 2000! But, as far I know, the version of "taking place in you" isn't the same with the first from 1995.

Anyway, I'm sure this track would have its place in both album: "Nerv" & "Magnet". :D:P

Eternal Basement is the project of Michael Kohlbecker with this being his debut album.  I found it (and you can still do so) quite cheaply on Discogs and wanted to see what all the fuss was about.  There has been fuss.  I heard it.  Lots of fuss.

Wow.  Let me say it again, wow.  This is truly entrancing stuff.  Talk about atmosphere and setting a mood?  This thing oozes quality and demands to have it's own science fiction graphic novel.  Nah, f*ck it an animated feature film.  Starting with Woy it is packed to the gills with genre influences.  Trance, goa, acid, tribal...truly mesmerizing.  Each track is built layer upon layer as he shows in Mind Out that becomes a dark groover.  And it's not just mindless beats, he builds around it making it an experience.  Well, until the third track.  And then...

Yeah, that's when things went tits up.  This album is truly a tale of two tracks.

Now I'm not going to tell you this is a classic.  Far from it.  How could it be?  Apart from the first two tracks this sounds pretty dated now.  I wasn't feeling A Flyby and the sounds in Nerv made me want to be elsewhere.  Too intense.  When Sadness Comes was just straight ahead with no dynamism until the 8 minute mark.  Too much time for meh to set in.  Poem is a pumping acid track that demands movement, but probably could've done more with it.  Hologram is a mid tempo acid/goa bouncer that again knows just one way, but was still enjoyable.  Even though going one way for over 14 minutes is a long, f*cking time.

So what began as an immersive experience quickly turned into where the f*ck are we going.
