Review:

The label of the year, no doubt, comes back with its second compilation. Not an

easy job they have here after releasing two of the best artists' albums of the

year, they've set themselves a very high standard. They make it on one aspect,

fail a bit on another. All the tracks here are great dancefloor material, it's

a groovy CD, with great percussion work, very powerful and with great sound

and production.

P-Woland, the next promise from the DS gang opens with a hypnotizing airy slow

tribal piece, which is definitely one of my favorites here and leaves me with

a taste for more from this guy. Then it's the Kites themselves. Air Play gives

the usual irresistible Son Kite percussion mayhem in that huge crisp clear

sound of theirs, for 6.5 minutes. Than it opens up into a melodic clubby build

up, which is beautiful but somehow losses it. Vibrasphere hits hard next with

Out of My Systems (T3) that shows their harder side, though those typical

dubby sequences are still here. A killer. Qlap's Puck el Pisto (from the

latest Qlap vinyl on DS) starts the heavier part here, no-nonsense in yer face

kick and bass, with powerful drive and great grooves. Be warned- this can make

a porridge of your brain! Tegma hits next with the great X-Calibur (T5), an

already established raw power dancefloor scorcher. Go for the ride- simple and

great. Then Ticon ease up a bit with a solid Ticonish track that hits the

mark, but somehow fails to excite me. Here also I think the compilation looses

the story line and gets lost a bit. After that, 12 Moons will surprise those

waiting for his known morningish transient tunes. Bad Pets (T7) is a hard

tech-trancey track, totally psychotic with an on-the-edge feel and qute dark

in atmosphere. Excellent stuff. Bigwigs follow with a totally groovy piece

with the Polish weirdness factor working hard- the happy jumpy kind of weird-

beautiful morning sounds. Etnoscope caught my ear with the recent Dus Fug 12",

these guys manufacture total tribal madness, Flosiploskan is no exception,

fast tribal drumming full of surprises and a great energetic and happy ending

to this CD.

Bottom Line: This is a collection of 9 blasts for the dancefloor, all will work

wonderfully, no doubt. A definite must for every DJ. As a compilation it

somehow looses the story on the way. Still it's one of the best compilations

of 2001.

Favorites: 1(!), 3, 4, 5(!), 7(!), 9.

Great compilation of warm, bassy grooves. Most of the tracks stand out from

the others and stick in your head. Not your typical trance. Track 1 is very

repetitive but it's such a great groove...Track 2 is a great Son Kite track

with everything that implies. Sudden changes, deep rhythms and great sounds.

Track 6 is typical sweet scandy candy. I had a feeling I heard this before

even though I didn't. Track 8 has a very interesting groove and slightly

crazy synth squirts here and there. Track 9 starts off suddenly with complex

percussions and builds on that. Tracks 3 and 4 are pretty good but I

sometimes skip them. Tracks 5 and 7 are boring mediocre crap of the

boom-boo-boom-boo variety. Favorites: 1,2,8,9. 8/10

Digital Structures rocks, thats all I have to say at this points. No other

label except Iboga releases so much high quality music. These are 8 songs that

could easily be singles for the price of one LP. My favourite is song # 6

Ticon - Shaken not Stoerd. Beautiful, no more, no less. Other highlights

include Son Kite with a track that sounds like what Massimo would sound like

had he evolved, the always great Vibrasphere and Bigwigs, who finally realize

that less noise sometimes is more listening enjoyment. All others are good

too, no weak tracks at all. Another honorable mention to Tegma, who have

definitely improved their production quality, very phat and full sounding. Oh

yeah, and the P-woland track is trippy as hell, nice work. Overall, great, I

voted it as the best compilation from 2001 , and it deserves it.

Digital Structures did it again.... they managed to release another

masterpiece. the sounds on this compilation are all very refreshing and

groovy... i realy like this type of progressive trance .... my favourites here

are 2, 4 , 6 and 8 ... the Son Kite is extremely hypnotising , wow I realy

like this track with the ultimate melody in the end ... and also the ticon

track is pretty emotional... the most insane partykiller is the Qlap one with

an incredible bass and crazy structures ... 8/10

Digital structures = best label in the moment

Hope the forthcoming releases will be just as qualitative as "footprints".

Son Kite & Ticon did it again! Great tracks, but the rest is good as well,

special gratitude to etnoscope!

For a change, Son Kite and Ticon do not make the greatest impressions on me.

P-Woland's track is for sure different and very trippy; a good warmer-up. But

I'll have to say the real killers on this comp are the two last tracks, with

that smashing "Flosiploskan" making nothing left to wish for. Great comp,

definitely a huge favourite!

Best compilation from Digital S., best tracks are: Vibrasphere - Out of..., a

strong space war track, really stomper and hypnotic; Qlap - Puck...made a real

good work, all respect; Tegma - X-Calibur is a real danceable track, good

production... the Ticon track sucks a lot, its almost House! Hey Ticon, you

must learn with the Vibrasphere track, this is real Psychedelic Trance,

huahuahua!

It's the sound of boredom. This is an actual photo of an artist creating this type of music. He only made it through half the track. 2001 was a different time in our little corner of the music landscape. Gone were the melodies and intricate sounds of goa only to be replaced with the unimaginative repetition of minimal. Sequencers were left running as knobs were twisted ever so gently over long track times to lull the masses to sleep. For me this is when trance was at it's lowest point. Now normally I would go track by track and let you know what I think but like politicians...they're all the same. No melodies, just pounding out the groove as percussive sounds and effects litter the track. I suppose Shaken not stoerd is closer to the progressive sound today and is actually not bad. Wondny prezes is more psychedelic than the rest and Flopsiploskan attempts to play every percussive instrument there is with some funky results. But when you can skip through a track in 2 minute intervals without much change...Houston we have a problem.

I know this came out over 10 years ago when this type of trance was popular, but if you revisit this I would defy you to tell me it isn't boring. Go ahead, I'll wait. I've read medical textbooks that had more drama. Back in 2001 when this was all there was I'm sure it was pretty good so I don't challenge the above reviews. Dial up modems and the Atari 2600 were cool too once upon a time. Only for the hardcore minimal fans.
