Review:

Drosophilia is the second goa album of the group Sun project. Before their first

goa album, Sun project was a rock group;and we sometimes can see it in their

tracks...but it's not disturbing. So, the problem of this album is that there

is a real lack of melody.Plenty of sounds, very fast, the tracks are nicely

linked together...but without melody, the album becomes harder to listen...

6.5/10

Hello, is anybody home? This is their 1st album and it has been released in

1997, quite good no? 'Tribolus' and 'At The Edge Of Time' are innovative

tracks. You'll find that CD in my personal psytrance TOP30. 8/10.

This album is brilliant.Tribulous and TOTC are probably my favourite tracks. If

you think their sound is strange give it some time and after a while you'll

get it.You just have to get their second (or is it third?) album Macrophage,

all I can say is that it's just excellent, especially track nr3.

Do you know that S.U.N. stands for "Stupid Unrespectable Noise"? (Menichelli

had say that in the German Mushroom-Magazine).

With drosophila, the old metal-freaks Menichelli, McCoy and Rumöller shows us

the art of guitar-goa. Not many artists can produce it so good how SUN (only

the guitar sounds of Tim Schuldt or Infected Mushroom does i like, very bad

are the Guitar-Mistakes by Boris Blenn and Johann Bley). The album: I only

have drosophila and the new Guitar-Trax-CD, but i now, that Drosophila is not

the best. Overall, i like this work. You can find here a lot of pretty good

tracks. All pieces are good, the ambient track at the end is also nice. My

favourite tracks are 1,3,4 and 10. Rating: 9/10.

Oh yes, that i have forget to write. I think that goa with guitars is the best

goa. But i believe, that's so because i not only like goa; i also like punk

and metal (for example Sex Pistols, Killing Joke, Tiamat). One time, when my

punk/metal-friends have visiting me, i have played this CD, and they have

said: What the fuck is this? It's very good sound: Powerfull and dark. Two

weeks later, they came to his first goa-party with me: and they have love the

party and the drugs :-)

Do not speak "we", speak for yourself, Psykojoako. I like guitars on goa music,

and S.U.N. Project is goa at its best. My first contact with goatrance was

with track number 3, At The Edge Of Time. Since that, i've never stopped

hearing SUN Project, i have everything from them. EVERYTHING. And it's ALL

awesome. Best tracks on this album are: 1 - Tribolus, 3 At The Edge Of Time,

with its classic guitar riffs, it's turned almost an goa anthem! 5 - The

Awakening, 6 - Sex, Drugs & Acidtrance and 10 - Going With The Flow... it's

kinda ambient sound.

Rating: 8/10

Really good one! Puts me where I want. Old and excellent goa, flouting in your

brain while Leaving enough space for your imagination, really sweep you off.

Favorite tracks? All of them, I like this album as one piece (In my TOP10 of

couch CDs), but I will surely be happy to hear some tracks in a party. 9/10

OK now, I read a lot of mixed reviews about this release; there are people who hail this as a classic, and then, there are those who regard this as worthless trashbecause of the heavy guitar use. Usually, I don't judge trance music by the guitar use measures. In fact, I think that goa can sound pretty cool if the guitars are properly used! And who better to use them properly than 3 ex-heavy metal fans?! So, as most reviewers already said, "At the edge of time", eventhough it is pretty guitar ridden, could easily be the album's highpoint. Along with that track, my other 2 personal favs would be "Awakening" and "Tribolus", which both burst with that old school goa energy! It's pointless analyzing the album track by track now closing in on its tenth anniversary, so I'll just briefly comment. This album's greatest innovation is the introduction of the (in my opinion) greatest trance act to have ever used electric guitars in their production. But, that apart, this album sound more like an introduction to what was to come later... These tracks aren't as half as memorable, psychedelic, crazy (you name it) as most of other tunes from that marvellous era. In no way are they bad, but saying that they are breathtaking and classic? No. They are not. This album may be best described as a cool ride down memory lane for old school fans when they dust it off from the top of a shelf. Tracks like the three mentioned above will have a greater impact on you if you stumble across them on some compilation then when listening to them on this album. Why? To some, listening to this album as a whole may get tiring after a while, because you don't get those dreamy melodies as Transwave, Electric Universe, neither that in-your-face sound of A.P., nor the over the top theatrics of Man With No Name, or the crazy psychedelic mayhem of Cosmosis and Hallucinogen... Plainly put, 7 out of 10 tracks here don't cross mediocrity. To me, this sounds like a nice debut album, from a trio still not as confident of themselves as they should be, and still searching for a sound of their own. The latter would be fully accomplished, according to me, on their third and, IMO, best album, "Zwork".

favorite tracks: 1, 3, 5

here you have an album that couldnt be filled with more melody, an extremely melodic album, like as melodic as they get

and you have people replying saying "i cant hear any melody in it"

i mean how is that possible? human hear must incredibly vary. the people probably hear goa melodies like they do elevator music, just a melody thats all over the place, and their brains cant follow it because they have inferior hearing and the part of the brain that processes sound signals.

Guitars and goa music ?

 I love guitars on goa music.

This cd sounds like a must have for me.

Nothing more orgasmic than a layer of warped synth placed

upon an heavy metal riff, maybe with a 303 line .

Today I'll get it. I hope tey use 303 also.

Yes I'm soooo childish and I love the way I am ....

space cadets prepare to fly trhough the cosmos

I hope I'm going straight forward to something like this

Well, finally I got the cd and it disappointed me.

Reading the thread I imagined something very fast and full

of heavy metal riffs ...

luckily at least I found my beloved 303

I don't like the first three tracks : they sound like the usual

stuff you can hear anywhere ,bzzwarp bzzwarp tunzi tunzi,

also stuck on a not-fast-not-slow bpm with

a minimal feeling ... zzzz ... boredom ...

With track #4 there is a little awakening, and nice works with

303 appear ... nothing sensational or original but at least

you awake , provided that you like this more progressive

style of music.

Track #5 is nice, a nice 303job, so if you like progressive this

track is for you ... the bass layer is well done, even it's nothing

of original because it sounds like 100 progressive songs

already existing ... it's similar to Slinky Wizard's Lunar Juice,

even it's more raw and doesn't flow smooth as in that song ...

After this one I don't like almost nothing of the remaining

tracks ... they thrown in a lot of things : bongo, guitar

solos, minimal progressive, howlings ... but every track seems

just to be floating without having any idea of where to go ...

and it isn't neither a nice floating ...

and I found melodies to be poorly inspired too ...

but of course this is just IMO

OK, first of all, make comments that makes sense...

Human taste varies naturally, and thank god for that. Second of all, this album has melodies, albeit not a lot of them, and they are everything but touching and memorable. If a classic goa trance albums consists of "goa melodies" (to use your terms), then we'd have ourselves a classic-packed, filler release absent genre. And we all know that is not the case. And what are "classic goa melodies"? S.U.N. Project? Classic melodies? WTF?

These lads are known for virtually everythin except having killer melodies (with a few exceptions of coarse)!

I wrote a review above, so there is no need for me to repeat myself, but: by no means is this album bad, and yes this is about as melodic as they ever got, but does that necessarily make the album a classic? Hell no. And most other reviewers didn't complained about the absense of melodies, they were more inclined to comment the heavily guitar ridden tracks. This is a cool goa trance album, one of many, and that is what I already wrote and that is what I still believe.

Anyway, guitars aren't so invasive in this cd. They appear in a couple of songs,

and in a really crap lead ...

there are psy artist that abuse more of electric guitars than SUN Project.

Reading the thread I expected to find something like Megadeth but with

a trance drum/bass line ... there are songs by other guys (i.e. : Tim

Schuldt) that are more contaminated by metal
